New gymnasium at Albury-Wodonga campus

20 Feb 2008

In 2007, La Trobe University’s Albury-Wodonga campus was successful in obtaining Federal Government funding through the 'Voluntary Student Unionism Transition Fund'.

Through an application to the Fund, the Wodonga Student Association obtained $164,950 for the development of a gymnasium/fitness centre adjoining the Student Association Building - 'The Hangar'.

Construction of the Stage 1 gymnasium has now been completed and will be available to students from the start of the 2008 academic year.

Early in October 2007, the grant was extended to $934,450 in the second round of allocations to enable construction of facilities to complement the gymnasium, including additional change rooms, aerobic fitness rooms, indoor-outdoor recreation spaces and external hard court playing areas.

"It is an exciting opportunity to be able to offer an on-campus gym facility to students and staff of La Trobe University. This extension to The Hangar will complement the existing Café and Bar facilities in the Hangar and the current student activities on-campus. We look forward to enhancing the facilities even further through the Stage 2 development," stated Joanne Mathey, Student Liaison Officer, Wodonga Student Association.

Dr Lin Crase, Executive Director of the Albury-Wodonga campus, said, "This is a great outcome for the students and staff, as they currently need to travel off campus for access to commercial sports and leisure centres. Once the fitness centre is open, they will be able to take advantage of the facilities and build their health and fitness programs into their timetables."

Dr Crase said that the new facilities will significantly enhance the student experience, encouraging more students to pursue their leisure time on the campus in relation to health and fitness needs.
