La Trobe University Employer of Choice for tackling gender pay gap

La Trobe University has again been awarded the Federal Government's Employer of Choice for Women Citation.

The Government's Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) announced the 2008 Award winners at midnight yesterday (Tuesday March 4).

The University is one of 99 organisations around Australia recognised in this year's Citations for its innovative policies and work practices in tackling the gender pay gap.

Announcing the award, the EOWA said La Trobe was one of 99 Australian organisations that understand the importance of ensuring their workplaces are equitable and flexible — and are willing to tackle tough issues like pay equity in order to attract and retain female staff.

La Trobe Pro Vice Chancellor (Equity and Student Services) Dr Kerry Ferguson said the introduction of six new pre-requisites to the selection process — including a requirement to demonstrate that the organisation's overall percentage pay gap was less than 17 per cent — ensured that the successful organisations were embedding a culture of equal opportunity in the workplace.

She said the University's research project 'Gender Factors in Promotion' was one important initiative which would further inform the University on strategies to assist female academic staff in their career progression.

The University's Diploma of University Administration introduced in 2001 was another initiative developed by and unique to La Trobe. It emphasised the value the University placed on providing opportunities to general staff who had previously not had the opportunity to undertake further study.

Dr Ferguson said preliminary findings of a survey of female staff who had completed the Diploma indicated it had increased their confidence and ability to succeed in their regular work environment. Some had since progressed to an undergraduate degree.

"The award also recognises the University's commitment to providing generous parental leave and flexible working hours to assist staff in managing their work/life balance," Dr Ferguson said.

"It is very pleasing that La Trobe had been recognised as an Employer of Choice for Women every year since the Award's inception in 2001, which is clear recognition of our commitment to equity and fairness."
