La Trobe expert in the news: Using Google Earth to unlock the secrets of Afghanistan's brilliant past

David Thomas a PhD student at La Trobe University, Melbourne, is available to talk about his extraordinary use of a commonplace high-tech tool to assist him in his archaeological research.

Google Earth has made the war torn country a feast of discovery for David and his colleagues. They have discovered hundreds of previously unknown sites in Melbourne from the comfort of their Melbourne research offices.

David has been able to catalogue 450 sites in the Registan desert region of Afghanistan. The last time a researcher physically visited the one known site was in the 1970s.
