John Richards Initiative Forum
The forum, to be held at the Albury-Wodonga campus from 10am -3.40pm, will involve key local and regional stakeholders presenting about and discussing innovative service provision in the region. The forum will be launched by John Richards, the founder of the JRI which focuses on research into aged care in rural communities.
The keynote address will be given by Professor Jeni Warburton, who chairs the JRI based within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Albury-Wodonga campus.
Professor Warburton will be giving a presentation called “Research into Aged Care in Rural Communities: What do we know and what do we need to know” which will outline her vision for the development of a research initiative based on rural ageing.
“I believe that we need to develop a program of research that makes a difference to the lives of a diverse range of older people living in rural communities. It is important to note that rural communities are growing older faster than metropolitan regions. This is particularly true in rural and regional Victoria,” stated Professor Warburton.
“Currently, there is a focus on research into the problems of poor health, disability and issues of loss associated with ageing. This is particularly true for those who live in rural and remote towns, who may also have problems accessing health services. What is needed is more of a focus on research that shows how to maintain good health as we age,” she said, “with the old adage, ‘prevention is better than cure’ being very appropriate here”.
Professor Warburton acknowledges the importance of drawing on the local expertise of agencies, organisations and policy-makers who will attend the Forum.
Professor Warburton maintains that if research is to be useful to local communities, then it is critical that it is undertaken in partnership with local agencies and others, as the collaborative aim is to build the capacity of the community to meet the local needs of an ageing population.
