Dubai women's art comes to Mildura

04 Apr 2008

Art exhibitions often travel a long way to get to Mildura – but few will have covered the distance of 'SHOW OFF 32', featuring works by students from Dubai Women's College.

The exhibition gives local art lovers rare glimpses into the richly diverse lives of people from another culture. It goes on show from today, Friday 4 until Thursday 10 April, at Stefano's Gallery, 25 Deakin Avenue.

The exhibition flows from an educational relationship between La Trobe University and Dubai Women's College (DWC), part of the Higher Colleges of Technology in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The relationship was forged by La Trobe Mildura campus executive director, Kent Farrell, who spent seven years teaching in the Emirates, where he also served as Deputy Director and Head of Academic Programs at Middlesex University (London) in Dubai.

Head of Graphic Arts and Design, Neil Fettling has worked closely with Dubai Women's College to bring the exhibition to Victoria.

Mr Fettling said the exhibition showcases the work of 20 students who graduated late last year with a Higher Diploma in Applied Media Studies from DWC.

They are in the process of joining the workforce as graphic designers, reporters and film makers in Dubai's expanding communications and media industries.

Mr Farrell said more than 16,000 students at UAE's national Higher Colleges of Technology studied areas including engineering, education, business, health sciences and IT.

'The relationship between La Trobe University and these colleges is an excellent example of how our students – and theirs – can participate in the global education experience.'

The exhibition will be officially opened by Henry Tankard, Chairman of the Mildura Arts Centre, on Monday 7 April, at 6 pm.
