David Malouf launches La Trobe Lecture Series

Celebrated Australian writer David Malouf will deliver La Trobe University's inaugural La Trobe Lecture at the Mildura Writers' Festival at 11am on Sunday 20 July – a highlight of this year's Festival, of which La Trobe University is a sponsor.

The title of his lecture is Where Australian Culture is going at the Moment. A free event, it will be held at the La Trobe University Lecture Theatre, Brian Grogan Building, on the University's Mildura Campus in Benetook Avenue.

The University's Thesis Eleven Centre for Cultural Sociology will also be a major contributor to this year's Mildura Writers' Festival, which is being held from 17 to 20 July 2008. It will present a session on Australian Rock Music at 4.15pm on Friday 18 July, at the Mildura Brewery Theatre Club. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

The Writing Australian Rock Music session will feature two prominent La Trobe sociologists, Thesis Eleven Centre Director Dr Trevor Hogan and Professor Peter Beilharz, former Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at Harvard, who will be joined by historian and author Clinton Walker, well-known for his works on Australian popular music.

A day of keynote speakers on campus

The University will also be hosting a series of Festival sessions on Saturday 19 July, from 8.30 am to 5.15 pm. These will feature a morning workshop for VCE literature students, conversations with key Festival speakers including Sonya Hartnett, Nicolas Rothwell and Alice Pung; and sessions including readings by David Malouf, Alex Miller and poets Les Murray, Anthony Lawrence and Sarah Day.
