La Trobe University Students Dominate Tourism Industry Amazing Race
On Friday the 10th of September, the Backpackers Operators Alliance of Victoria (BOAV) in conjunction with the Hotel, Motel and Accommodation Association (HMAA) hosted the Tourism Industry Amazing Race. The event attracted some forty two teams from various sectors of the tourism industry, including educational institutions. Of the forty-two teams, La Trobe University Bundoora dominated, entering five teams into the race. Each team was required to race throughout Melbourne CBD, completing various challenges and activities to score the highest number of points. Challenges included singing in Federation Square with a crowd watching, visiting key tourism icons and making a cocktail in a hotel. Strategy and good team work were certainly the key contributors to success.
The event was held as part of Victoria Tourism Week, a project organised by VTIC (Victorian Tourism Industry Council) and Destination Melbourne. The purpose of the project was to educate Victorians on the social and economic benefits of tourism to our community, whilst providing an array of opportunities to participate in various activities and events held across the state.
The Amazing Race was a key event which bought the tourism industry together .The five teams representing La Trobe comprised of Tourism and Hospitality lecturers from the School of Management (Jessica Derham, Paul Willard, Lisa Melsen and Clare Lade), along with students currently completing the Master of Tourism course and Undergraduate tourism courses. The student representation from La Trobe at the event is to be commended, with some 18 student’s participating. It was a great opportunity for the students to apply the skills they have been building throughout their degrees. It also provided a fantastic networking opportunity as many sectors of the tourism industry were represented. The University has recognised the growth of the events industry and in 2011 will offer a Bachelor of Business in Events Management.
