The Hon Michael Kirby presents at 2009 Annual Justice Speech
On 22 October 2009, La Trobe Law Students’ Association and Leo Cussen Institute hosted the Annual Justice Speech for students, staff and practitioners. The event was presented by the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG. The Hon Michael Kirby was appointed to the High Court of Australia on 6 February 1996. In February 2009 he retired making him Australia’s longest serving judicial officer.
The topic of the lecture was “50 Years on the Law: A Critical Self Assessment.” In a frank, witty and naturally debonair manner, his honour reflected on the success and shortfalls of his career. Students and practitioners listened eagerly to his experiences in practice at the bar and at the bench. His Honour brought to light a number of personal and professional highlights and revealed a number of key regrets. All in all it was a particularly refreshing and inspiring event.
