International human rights appointment
International human rights specialist Penelope (Penny) Andrews has returned to Australia to take up a Chair in the Law School at La Trobe University.
Professor Andrews – who previously lectured at La Trobe between 1986 and 1992 – holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degree from Natal University in Durban, South Africa, and Master of Law degree from New York's Columbia University Law School.
Active in the Association of American Law Schools, Professor Andrews serves as Chair of its Africa section, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Minorities Section. Professor Andrews is also a member of the Law and Society Association, where she co-chairs the International Affairs Section, and a member of the American Bar Association.
In addition to her appointment at La Trobe, for the next two years she will remain a Professor of Law and Director of International Studies at Valparaiso University School of Law, Indiana, USA. Prior to that, she was a tenured professor and Director of International Internships at the City University of New York School of Law.
Professor Andrews has held visiting positions at law schools in the USA, Europe, Canada, South America and South Africa, and has written extensively on human rights, women’s rights, and comparative constitutional issues. She serves on the board of several law journals, and is editor of the 'International Review of Constitutionalism'.
Professor Andrews is co-editor of 'The Post-Apartheid Constitutions: Reflections on South Africa's Basic Law' (Ohio University Press) and 'Comparative Constitutionalism and Rights: Global Perspectives' (Vandeplas Publishing).
Her manuscript, 'From Cape Town to Kabul: Rethinking Strategies for Pursuing Women's Human Rights' will be published by Ashgate Publishing in 2010.
A member of the board of the Africa Section of Human Rights Watch, Professor Andrews has received several awards for her work on women and human rights.
