Ambassador Dr Geoff Raby's speech opened China Development Seminar Series at La Trobe University - 04 May 2011

At the invitation of the Centre for China Studies, His Excellency Dr Geoff Raby, Australia Ambassador to China, delivered a very interesting and successful inaugural seminar of the China Development Seminar Series: Platform for Perspectives and Opportunities.

The event attracted an audience of more than one hundred, including guests from the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Melbourne, local government, business sectors and staff and students from the University.

Professor John Rosenberg, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President of La Trobe University opened the seminar and formally launched the China Development seminar series. Professor Paul Johnson, Vice-Chancellor, extended a warm welcome to the Ambassador and highly praised his contributions to the development of Australia-China relations.

With the topic of The Raby Years: Observations and Reflections of my time in China, Ambassador Dr Raby gave his thoughts on the major events in China over the past few years. The Ambassador also reviewed the significant issues that affected the bilateral relations between China and Australia and the great efforts both countries made to improve the friendship. The Ambassador's speech sparked great interest among the audience, particularly the students and many questions were asked around Sino-Australia relations and China and Australia's foreign policies.

After the seminar, Chancellor Professor Adrienne Clarke hosted a luncheon at the Centre for China Studies in honour of the Ambassador. Around twenty distinguished guests were invited to attend the luncheon. The Ambassador thanked La Trobe for inviting him back to the University in which he used to study and said he thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The next seminar of the China Development Seminar Series: Platform for Perspectives and Opportunities will be given by Professor Jianfu Chen from the School of Law at the University on China on Thursday 6 October, 2011. The seminar series aims to provide a constructive platform for scholars from La Trobe University and beyond to share ideas, knowledge and experience, to encourage interdisciplinary academic dialogue and to assist with development of links between scholars who share common research interests related to China. The Centre for China Studies welcomes all staff and students to attend the events.
