As part of La Trobe University's commitment to rural and regional students and workforce training and our new regionally based Master of Professional Psychology program, in 2021 we will be funding Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) approved supervisor training for eligible psychologists who are practicing in rural and regional Victoria. The training would be provided on a commitment from the supervisor and their employing agency that on obtaining Board Approved Supervisor status, they will be available to supervise at least two La Trobe University postgraduate psychology students undertaking their external placement in 2021 and/or 2022, 2023. We hope that this will be the first step in a long-term placement partnership between the supervisor, agency and La Trobe University postgraduate psychology programs.
What PsyBA approved supervisor training entails:
Psychology Board of Australia competency-based supervisor training involves three components completed in sequence:
- Knowledge Assessment (online and self-paced completed prior to part 2, (24 hours));
- Skills training (Two full day online workshop (14hrs)); and,
- Competency assessment and evaluation (submission of recorded supervision session and reflections).
All three parts must be successfully completed in sequence to be approved as a supervisor. It is expected that the three components will be finished within 3-6 months.
Are you eligible to become a PsyBA approved supervisor?
To become a PsyBA approved supervisor you are required to have held general registration (or equivalent overseas registration) as a psychologist for three years. You can enrol in the training if you have held general registration for at least 2.5 years because your approval as a supervisor will be for five years from the date you complete all three training components.
How the La Trobe subsidy works
Full Psychology Board of Australia competency-based supervisor training costs $1000-1500 per individual. La Trobe University will cover the cost of supervisor training provided online by James Cook University Centre for Rural and Remote Health. The Centre specialises in training health professionals working in regional, rural and remote settings.
The training would be provided on a commitment from the supervisor and their employing agency that on obtaining Board Approved Supervisor status, they will be available to supervise at least two La Trobe University postgraduate psychology students undertaking their external placement in 2021 and/or 2022, 2023.
