La Trobe Alumni Jack Kovacic gets his start in sport with Melbourne City

La Trobe University’s long-term ties with its sport industry partners continues to deliver positive employability outcomes for students.

Take La Trobe alumni Jack Kovacic for example, who has been able to benefit from La Trobe University’s sport industry connections.

Jack completed a Bachelor of Media and Communications (Sports Journalism) in 2020. He began his internship with La Trobe’s sport industry partner in Melbourne City during the second year of his degree and was offered a full-time role as the Content and Media Coordinator at the club in the latter stages of his degree.

Originally from South Australia, Jack moved interstate to pursue a career in sport. Weighing up a few different options, Jack said the specialised Sport Journalism major was the key factor in his decision to study with La Trobe.

“In South Australia, there was actually no Sports Journalism course, it was just journalism and no major in sports journalism – unlike what you have here at La Trobe,” he said.

“I lived on campus for the first two years of my degree, so I’ve spent plenty of time on campus and everyone there is super nice and super welcoming. It was just a really easy place to move into.”

Jack is extremely grateful for the opportunity he was able to get through working with La Trobe’s industry partners.

“I have just loved my time at the club and it was great to be able to get it through La Trobe,” Jack said.

“There’s been a fair few different skills I learnt over my time at La Trobe that helped me get the internship at Melbourne City in the first place and then that transitioned into the full-time role.

“I highly recommend current and future students to try and get an internship. There’s no better way to get experience in your field than going out and doing your job."

Along with Melbourne City, La Trobe is the proud higher education partner of the Carlton Football Club and the Melbourne Rebels. La Trobe University also has a number of community delivery partnerships with the Northern Football Netball League, Softball Australia, Softball Victoria and ACHPER Victoria.
