2018 will see the delivery of the inaugural ‘Emerging Curators Program’ at LAI. This is an opportunity for a curator in the early stages of their career to develop and deliver an exhibition of their own design, under the mentoring guidance of the curatorial staff of LAI. The program is a dynamic, industry-based learning and development opportunity for emerging curators, providing valuable experience and insight into exhibition production.
The first participant in the program is Brigid Hansen, a recent graduate from the Master of Art Management program at RMIT. Brigid was selected from among 28 applicants who sent in submissions from Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland, Melbourne and central Victoria. The response to the callout for applicants was overwhelming, indicating a need for more industry-based professional development opportunities, and an interest in the evolving Art Institute at La Trobe.
Brigid will deliver her exhibition in September 2018 and will be mentored through every aspect of the preparation, planning and presentation of the show. The theme of the show is set around the use of humour in contemporary Australian art, with a focus on marginalised voices. Works will be sourced from public collections and directly from invited artists. Parallel public programs will also be developed to enrich audience engagement, provide further professional development opportunity and promote the curator, artists, Institute and University.
Stay tuned for more information about the full 2018 Exhibition Program at LAI to be announced later this month.
