Emma Cox wins gold in San Marino

La Trobe Elite Athlete Emma Cox wins gold at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in San Marino.

La Trobe University elite athlete Emma Cox said that she feels ‘amazing’ following her gold medal performance in the women’s trap competition at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in San Marino.

23-year-old Cox, who has almost completed her Bachelor of Education degree at La Trobe’s Bendigo campus, defeated 2008 Olympic Bronze medallist Corey Cordell to achieve her first World Cup podium finish on the 3rdof June.

Currently ranked 53rd in the world, the Mooroopna resident credited a great support team and strong preparation for her noteworthy performance, hitting a career best 73 targets in the qualifications.

“I had a really good lead up to the qualifications just coming off winning the National Down the Line Championships in Wagga Wagga,” Cox said.  “I also had a really amazing team travelling with me and a good run of training at home with my coach.”

“To calm my nerves (heading into the final) I concentrated on my breathing to keep me in the now … and thought about all the training I had done in the lead up.”

Cox said that the support of La Trobe’s Elite Athlete Program (LEAP) has assisted her with achieving her academic goal of completing a Bachelor of Education degree.

“LEAP has allowed me to plan my studies around my training and competition commitments,” Cox said.  “It gives you the assurance that you’ll be able to get all the help you need at University.”

Following her podium finish, Cox has swiftly shifted her focus to upcoming events such as the World DTL Championships held in Ireland in July and the ISSF World Cup Final later in the year.

Cox is currently ranked number one in the world to qualify for the World Cup in Rome, a feat that she is extremely proud of.

“The world cup final is a highly prestigious event in the shooting world, so to be ranked first to qualify after all the world cups is a huge achievement and honour.

Cox has seven weeks of placement remaining before the conclusion of her degree which she hopes to have completed by the end of 2016.
