Golf Day Raises Funds for Scholarships
A bright, sunny day on 31st March proved perfect golfing weather for the second Vice-Chancellor's Corporate Golf Day at Kingston Heath Golf Club. Over $40,000 was raised towards scholarships in the area of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, including $6000 resulting from the auction and raffle.
Eleven teams displayed their prowess at this venerable sport, with Diamond Protection, Telstra, Dimension Data, Charter Keck Cramer, Cisco Systems Australia, SAP Australia, Shimadzu Scientific Instruments, Melbourne City Football Club, Commonwealth Bank and Secnet all bringing teams to play against the Vice-Chancellor's Team. Other sponsors included, Swisse Wellness Pty Ltd, Etihad Airways, Virgin Australia, CT Connections, Mantra Bell City and Kingston Heath.
Olympian basketballer Chris Anstey was a special guest player, sinking a much smaller ball than usual for both our gold sponsor teams, Telstra and Diamond Protection. Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient, Andrew Abercrombie, played for the Vice-Chancellor's team, along with Bree Laughlin and Mike Clayton.
The overall winning team was Dimension Data – with Alex Sloan, Andrew Wood (Wood Property), Louise Casterns and George Stathopoulos all swinging impressive drivers, putters or wedges. The prince of putting, however, was Jarrod Jeremiah of Complete Wealth, playing with Shimadzu Scientific Instruments, who won the putting competition. Charter Keck Cramer's Anthony Witton won the nearest pin competition.
Winning auction bidders, helping to contribute to the scholarship fundraising, were Michael Bedwell, Mark Whitford and Andrew Abercrombie.
At the event later that night, Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar spoke about La Trobe's goal of becoming the best sports university in Australia. Among the evening's guest speakers were Nicholas Vecci, a scholarship recipient who spoke of the impact of sport on student lives, and Professor Russell Hoye, who talked about the opportunities arising with scholarships in the RFA and for collaboration.
