'My personal philosophy is to make a difference,' says Elizabeth Proust AO. 'If you can do that and have some fun along the way, then life's pretty good.'
During her career, Ms Proust has led major companies, government and community organisations. Her roles have included serving as Deputy Director-General of the Department of Industry, Technology and Resources from 1987, CEO of the City of Melbourne from 1990, and Secretary of the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet – the most senior public service position in Victoria – from 1995.
'I think it's important when you're working to think about people who are not as well-off,' says Ms Proust. 'I've always been involved in something in addition to work and the family – in the arts, in universities and in charities.'
Ms Proust is currently Chairman of Nestle Australia, Chairman of the Bank of Melbourne and a Director of Perpetual Ltd, Insurance Manufacturers Australia Pty Ltd and Sinclair Knight Merz Pty Ltd. She is also a member of the JP Morgan Advisory Council.
