Chinese calligrapher and painter Gao Yi (高译) visited La Trobe University's Bendigo campus and Visual Arts Centre on 8 October 2014. During the visit, Visual Arts students were provided the opportunity to witness an established Chinese artist in practice.
A practitioner of two of the traditional Four Arts of China: calligraphy (shūfǎ, 书法) and ink and wash painting (shuĭmò, 水墨), Gao Yi produced and donated a number of works to the La Trobe Art Institute and the Arts Department.
Visiting La Trobe University in his capacity as Associate Professor and Master Instructor in the Department of Fine Arts at Peking University, and in connection with the Centre for China Studies' Australia-China Student Forum, Gao Yi was inspired by our local environment and could be seen across campus applying this inspiration to his practice of landscape painting; a practice regarded as the highest form of Chinese painting.
Gao Yi's paintings and calligraphy works have been collected by many Chinese and overseas collectors.
