The soft skills and personal qualities employers want most

Discover how you can become Career Ready while you study at La Trobe.

No matter what career path you choose to follow, you’ll need a suite of soft skills in your toolkit that you can carry between jobs, across industries and even around the world.

Soft skills are things like teamwork and effective communication, but also personal qualities like being passionate, conscientious and having a wholehearted go. They’re in high demand – in a recent survey, 59 per cent of hiring managers said soft skills were hard to find in job applicants.

As a La Trobe student, you’ll have free access to Career Ready events like our Employer Masterclass, which brings hiring managers to campus so you can hear firsthand what they’re looking for in new hires. You can make a successful first impression, get a feel for what it’s like to work for their organisation and learn about graduate programs they offer.

At our 2018 Employer Masterclass, more than 40 employers from across Australia spoke about the soft skills and personal qualities they value in new hires. Watch our video to discover what areas you need to develop to land your dream job.
