Daydreaming of studying again? Or starting your own business? Normally, re-skilling would require an all-in commitment of fitting studies around life, paying fees and potentially giving up the day job. But not right now.
For the first time ever, La Trobe University is offering a free taster of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) – and it’s open to everyone. Over a thousand people have already taken up the challenge from as far as Canada, Nigeria and Germany.
‘We’ve had a number of people who have joined the program and said they haven’t engaged in learning for a while. We’ve also got partners and people from all around the world, so learning from others is a great benefit,’ says Dr Susan Inglis, who helped design and now deliver the short MBA course.
The Business School Honorary Associate says the online program has three core modules: Leading Self, Leading Others and Leading for Results, with fascinating topics on the future of work, workplace trends and some career guidance tools.
Each module takes four to six hours to complete – you can pick and choose your areas of interest and do it all at your own pace with the support of academics and other participants.
You will also receive a certificate of participation if you complete a set amount of work, and credit towards the full Master’s if you decide to take the plunge.
The free MBA taster emerged out of the University’s desire to support exclusive sport partners including Carlton FC, Melbourne City FC and Melbourne Rebels, by providing them with new skills and professional development during the COVID-19 economic slowdown.
La Trobe then decided to open it up to everyone free of charge as a way of giving back to the community, which is one of the University’s core values. The leading business academics and MBA alumni running the course have all volunteered their time for similarly altruistic reasons.
Dr Susan Inglis says this is a unique opportunity to take stock and learn about yourself.
‘Often people are too time poor to invest in their own personal development – now this is the perfect time to do it. You will come out at the end of this road, whenever it ends, as having learned more about yourself and how you want to use your talents and strengths,” she shares.
