A parent’s guide to Open Day

A parent’s guide to Open Day

Brought to you by Open Day at La Trobe. You’ve done the research and read the guides, now visit us to find your clever.

When it comes to helping your son or daughter choose a university, you’re sure to have many questions: What course should they study? What kind of support does the uni offer? What’s the campus community like?

Attending Open Day is an important opportunity for your child to decide if a university is the right fit for them. As a parent, it’s also the perfect chance for you to help guide that decision and ensure they’ll be attending a university that will support them throughout their degree.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of the day.

Plan your day

Make sure you register online for our Open Day planner to find out what’s on and schedule your day. We’ll be running informative course presentations, fun and interactive workshops and tours of our state-of-the-art facilities.

Take a campus tour

There’s no better way to get a feel for the university. Guided campus tours run all day, giving you a taste of our facilities, accommodation options and student life at La Trobe.

Meet our clever students and academics

We’re sure you have plenty of questions about your child’s future university, and that’s a good thing. Make sure you note them down and bring them along to Open Day.

Students and academics from all study areas will be on hand and more than happy to discuss your child’s course options, chat about campus lifestyle and provide a well-rounded view of life at La Trobe.

Arrive armed with questions – our staff and students are here to chat to you about everything from course options to campus life.

Check out our student support services

We offer a number of services to support your child from the moment they receive an offer to the time they graduate, including:

  • dedicated Student Services such as peer learning advisers (PLAs), online tutoring, free counselling and more
  • the La Trobe Equality and Diversity Centre, which promotes a safe environment free of discrimination and harassment
  • culturally sensitive support services for Indigenous students
  • an International Student Services team, which provides learning support and social programs.

Take the opportunity to visit the information hubs at Open Day to learn more about the support channels available to La Trobe students.

Head to information hubs to find out more about study support services and social programs.

Learn about our Career Ready program

Find out how we’ll prepare your child for the future workplace. Attend our Career Ready workshops to find out how we’ll help your child manage their career, gain valuable work experience and build their professional networks before they graduate.

If your child is unsure which course to study or what kind of career they’re suited for, our career advisers will be available to have a chat and help guide them in the right direction.

Find out how your child could be eligible for an early offer

Year 12 exams can place a ton of pressure on students. We recognise that there’s much more to ‘clever’ than exam marks alone. Our Aspire Early Admissions program rewards students who volunteer, lead and make a positive impact on their communities by offering an early conditional placement at La Trobe. If you think your child fits this category, head to the Aspire hub at Open Day. You can find out more information about how the program works and even apply on the spot with assistance from our team.

Ask questions

Most importantly, don’t be shy in asking questions. This is your opportunity to fuel up on as much information as possible before your son or daughter enters the next stage of their life.
