For the part of semester when \u201cjust get organised\u201d isn\u2019t quite cutting it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere between the mid-semester break ending and Week 9 beginning, my calendar became slightly offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An assignment here. Placement work there. Classes, Storyteller work, regular work and exams sitting just far enough away that I can still pretend they\u2019re not happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked at everything and had one very reasonable thought:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay. I\u2019ll just be really productive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As if I had discovered something revolutionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is usually the point in semester when the productivity advice starts appearing too. Start early. Make a timetable. Prioritise. Get eight hours of sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All very sensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But sometimes, you already know all of that. Sometimes there is simply a lot going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe everything isn\u2019t urgent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve noticed that when I have five things to do, my brain likes to treat all five as though they\u2019re due tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They usually aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So lately, instead of trying to perfectly organise the next three weeks of my life, I\u2019ve been asking a much smaller question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What actually needs me today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it\u2019s an assignment. Sometimes it\u2019s placement work. Sometimes it\u2019s the email I\u2019ve mentally replied to approximately seven times without ever actually pressing send.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not a groundbreaking productivity system, but it makes a long list feel slightly less loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when I do finally choose the assignment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you just need to start\u2026 badly<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something about a blank Word document that makes me believe my first sentence needs to be brilliant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of my assignments have started with three questionable bullet points, half an introduction and \u201cFIND A SOURCE FOR THIS\u201d<\/strong> written aggressively in the middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The polished version can come later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point in semester, I\u2019ve realised that starting badly is usually much more useful than waiting to suddenly feel ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe your break should actually be a break<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one I am still learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closing my laptop, immediately opening my phone and scrolling for 40 minutes does feel<\/em> like a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My brain apparently disagrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When deadlines are getting closer, stopping can feel strangely unproductive. But I\u2019ve had evenings where I\u2019ve stared at the same paragraph for so long that even the paragraph was probably tired of seeing me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes my reset is an iced coffee and a different study spot. Sometimes it\u2019s a walk around campus. Sometimes it\u2019s going home and deciding that today has simply done enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assignment will still be there tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very loyal of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe the plan genuinely needs to change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there are weeks when even your best plan doesn\u2019t survive Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You get sick. Something unexpected happens at home. Work gets complicated. Life, very inconveniently, continues happening even when an assignment is due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve realised there\u2019s a difference between \u201cI left this a little late\u201d<\/em> and \u201csomething has genuinely affected my ability to get this done.\u201d<\/em> And when it\u2019s the second one, trying to quietly push through isn\u2019t always the only option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Trobe has processes such as 3-day extensions and Special Consideration<\/a> for circumstances that affect your assessments. They\u2019re not a magical \u201cdeadline please disappear\u201d button, there are eligibility requirements and processes to follow, but they\u2019re worth knowing about before you\u2019re sitting there wondering what you\u2019re supposed to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And not every difficult week is really about the assignment itself. If something is affecting your wellbeing, Wellbeing Services<\/a> is there to support students, and if you\u2019re experiencing concerning, threatening or unsafe behaviour, Safer Community<\/a> is another place you can reach out to for advice and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes managing a busy semester isn\u2019t about sticking perfectly to the original plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it\u2019s knowing what to do when the plan changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, how am I doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, I\u2019m writing this near the end of semester, so I can\u2019t exactly tell you I\u2019ve cracked the code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My calendar is still full. Exams are still approaching and future Shubhi will almost certainly have some feedback for current Shubhi about the assignments she could have started earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I\u2019m starting to think this part of semester doesn\u2019t need a brand-new, perfectly organised version of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it just needs us to decide what matters today, start somewhere even if it isn\u2019t perfect, recognise when we\u2019ve done enough; and occasionally admit that another productivity tip isn\u2019t what we need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
