Niharika Malviya, a LTU student, is interning with the Students Comms team. These are her reflections on how trying a bit of everything can feel uncertain at times\u00a0–\u00a0but also unexpectedly meaningful<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0good at everything\u2026 but not the best at anything?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once, my tutor said to me,\u00a0
\u201cNiharika, you\u2019re a jack of all trades\u00a0–\u00a0but have you mastered\u00a0any\u00a0one?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I awkwardly laughed and moved on, not realising how much that line would stay with me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, it felt like one of those things you hear, think about briefly, and forget. Like advice that sounds important, but not immediately relevant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turns out, it became something I kept coming back to and it only got deeper over time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack of all trades, but master of none,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0
Would it be better just knowing one?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0
Am I good at anything\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0ever\u00a0begun,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0
Or just trying everything for the fun?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

It didn\u2019t hit all at once. Just small moments. Quiet comparisons. Watching someone be really good at something and thinking – that\u2019s impressive\u2026 and slightly inconvenient for my self-esteem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because when I looked at everything I\u2019d tried, it all felt a bit scattered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I used to be into art – something I was good at, something people noticed, but never something I took further. Singing was fun, but not something I stayed with long enough. I got into basketball for a while, then slowly retired (not officially – just by not putting in the effort). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there was dancing – something I\u2019m actually good at. I perform, I enjoy it, and I keep coming back to it. Not because I have to, but because I want to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m just\u2026 not the best at it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even academically, I\u2019ve always been somewhere in the middle. Doing well, but not quite that<\/em> student. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From where I stood, it felt like I was doing a bit of everything – but not really becoming anything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What made it more confusing was how others saw it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because from the outside, it didn\u2019t look like that at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

People came to me for help. Friends opened up to me when they were struggling. Somehow, I became the \u201cadvice person\u201d – which felt ironic, considering I\u2019m still figuring things out myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that made me pause. <\/p>\n\n\n

Because while I was questioning what I was good at, others seemed to think I already had something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe that\u2019s what being human is – you can have a bit of everything.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I\u2019m not great at singing, but I\u2019m a good listener. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I didn\u2019t stick with basketball, but I learned how to show up when something mattered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I\u2019m not the best dancer, but I enjoy it – and maybe that counts for more than I thought. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere in between all of that, something shifted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It reminded me of the movie 3 Idiots<\/em> – how sometimes it\u2019s not about being the best at something, but about genuinely enjoying what you do. <\/p>\n\n\n

The doubt didn\u2019t disappear completely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it stopped feeling like the whole story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I started to realise that mastering something doesn\u2019t just come from trying: it takes consistency, patience, and the willingness to stay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And honestly, that\u2019s something I\u2019m still working on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I just haven\u2019t found that one thing I want to stick with long enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or maybe I\u2019m still figuring out if I even need to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for now, I think that\u2019s okay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because not everything has to turn into something you master. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some things can just be things you enjoy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things you try, experience, and carry with you – even if they don\u2019t show up as results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack of all trades, still mastering none,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0
But\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0stopped feeling sorry\u00a0–\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0learning, and\u00a0life\u2019s\u00a0fun.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
