{"id":57884,"date":"2026-03-19T11:37:41","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T00:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/?p=57884"},"modified":"2026-03-19T14:52:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T03:52:30","slug":"ssaf-changes-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/ssaf-changes-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"How\u00a0your SSAF is used\u00a0is changing\u00a0\u2013 here&#8217;s what it means for you"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>La Trobe is updating the way the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/students\/admin\/fees-and-money\/ssaf\">Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)<\/a> is&nbsp;used&nbsp;to give students more transparency and more say in how your fees support&nbsp;your university experience,&nbsp;programs&nbsp;and services.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is&nbsp;changing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La Trobe is creating a modern,&nbsp;compliant&nbsp;and student\u2011centred SSAF model that strengthens the role of&nbsp;two&nbsp;independent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/students\/new\/campus-life\/student-organisations\">student\u2011led&nbsp;organisations<\/a>&nbsp;who La Trobe&nbsp;currently&nbsp;partners with: the La Trobe Student Union (LTSU) and the La Trobe Student Association (LTSA).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new model will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>give&nbsp;students a stronger voice in decision\u2011making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensure&nbsp;services are high\u2011quality and consistent across all campuses and online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>meet&nbsp;new federal requirements for how universities manage SSAF, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>make&nbsp;funding more transparent and accountable.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift sets La Trobe up to meet&nbsp;government&nbsp;legislation and ensures the services you&nbsp;fund&nbsp;and&nbsp;access are governed ethically, consistently and with clear accountability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is La Trobe making this change?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By January 2027,&nbsp;La Trobe University&nbsp;is&nbsp;required to&nbsp;operate&nbsp;a fully compliant model that follows the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.gov.au\/higher-education-loan-program\/higher-education-support-act-2003-and-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Higher Education Support Act 2003<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;(Cth)<\/em>&nbsp;and updated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.gov.au\/higher-education-loan-program\/approved-hep-information\/student-services-and-amenities-fee-ssaf-and-sa-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Services, Amenities, Representation and Advocacy Guidelines<\/a>.&nbsp;This means that 40% of all annual SSAF collected by&nbsp;La Trobe&nbsp;must&nbsp;be&nbsp;allocated&nbsp;to the LTSU and LTSA&nbsp;to&nbsp;provide student-led services,&nbsp;programs&nbsp;and events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Trobe\u2019s current model no longer meets these&nbsp;new&nbsp;requirements, so transition&nbsp;arrangements are underway in 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our goal is&nbsp;to&nbsp;make the transition smooth for students with no disruption to your services&nbsp;and programs.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;no matter where or how you study \u2013 on campus, online or regional \u2013 you can expect a reliable, high\u2011quality experience&nbsp;as student-led organisations&nbsp;commence&nbsp;their delivery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the&nbsp;changes that students can expect?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. A stronger, student\u2011led system&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student\u2011led organisations&nbsp;will deliver services for students&nbsp;with a minimum of&nbsp;40% of SSAF funding provided by the University to deliver in addition to their own organisation\u2019s activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student Advocacy services\u00a0will continue to be managed by the LTSA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During 2026, regular student updates will&nbsp;provide&nbsp;updates on services and programs that may be transitioning to Student-led Organisations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.&nbsp;A stronger partnership between students and La Trobe&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>La Trobe&nbsp;and&nbsp;our&nbsp;Student\u2011led&nbsp;Organisations will&nbsp;continue to&nbsp;work together through&nbsp;Funding and Services&nbsp;Agreements&nbsp;that outline the services, governance,&nbsp;quality&nbsp;and reporting requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student\u2011led&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;will manage their own digital and information systems,&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;organisational&nbsp;independence,&nbsp;mitigating&nbsp;risks&nbsp;and&nbsp;enhancing&nbsp;privacy&nbsp;for students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;La Trobe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/students\/opportunities\/students-as-partners\/student-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Council<\/a>&nbsp;will bring together a wider range of student voices (including international,&nbsp;regional&nbsp;and online students) to help shape how the remaining 60% of SSAF funding is&nbsp;allocated, in partnership with all students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. A model built for the future&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>La Trobe&nbsp;has strengthened&nbsp;its governance and partnership&nbsp;approaches&nbsp;to meet&nbsp;the new&nbsp;legal and accountability requirements&nbsp;associated with the management of SSAF&nbsp;established by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.gov.au\/higher-education-loan-program\/approved-hep-information\/student-services-and-amenities-fee-ssaf-and-sa-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australian Government<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New&nbsp;quality assurance&nbsp;and&nbsp;contract&nbsp;management approaches&nbsp;will ensure SSAF funds are spent responsibly,&nbsp;safely&nbsp;and transparently, with&nbsp;clear evidence&nbsp;of benefit to students.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Reliable, continuous support for every student&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019ll&nbsp;continue to access high\u2011quality services delivered by both La Trobe and&nbsp;student\u2011led&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;across&nbsp;Australia&nbsp;and online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The transition will be carefully coordinated to&nbsp;minimise&nbsp;disruption and strengthen collaboration between student leaders&nbsp;and representatives, the&nbsp;University&nbsp;and external partners.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give us your feedback and ideas&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La Trobe wants students to help shape how&nbsp;SSAF&nbsp;is spent. Your ideas and feedback directly guide what programs, services and initiatives are funded each year.
