{"id":54467,"date":"2026-02-23T10:03:50","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T23:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/?p=54467"},"modified":"2026-02-23T16:35:50","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T05:35:50","slug":"how-to-protect-yourself-from-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/how-to-protect-yourself-from-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"How to protect yourself from scams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Cyber criminals often use O\u2011Week to take advantage of new students receiving high volumes of emails. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be especially alert over the coming weeks, particularly to emails that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create urgency or pressure you to act quickly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask you to click links, open attachments, or review shared files you weren\u2019t expecting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appear to come from a colleague or known contact but seem unusual<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask you to log in, verify details, or share information outside normal processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If something doesn\u2019t feel right, pause and check. Even emails that look legitimate can sometimes come from compromised accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you receive a suspicious message, please:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the\u00a0<strong>Report Phishing<\/strong> button in Outlook,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or contact\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:cybersecurity@latrobe.edu.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>cybersecurity@latrobe.edu.au<\/u><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common scams targeting students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Job scams<\/strong>: You might receive a message via text, WhatsApp or social media offering easy money or commissions for work, reviews and more. These scammers often use stolen branding to look legit. Some ask you to invest money to earn more \u2014 usually via crypto, making it hard to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Student fee scams:<\/strong> Offers to pay your fees at a discounted rate are fake and the money won&#8217;t be lodged. Always pay your fees directly to La Trobe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phishing scams:<\/strong> Some scammers send emails or texts claiming you have a tax refund or Centrelink payment waiting for you. Don\u2019t click these \u2014 check your MyGov account directly instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bank impersonation:<\/strong> You could receive a call that looks like it comes from your bank&#8217;s legitimate phone number or a text that appears in the same thread as a genuine bank message, but it&#8217;s actually a scammer. Always verify contact from your bank via official channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Accommodation scams: <\/strong>Rent that seems too good to be true? It might be, especially if they ask for upfront payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Threat and extortion scams:<\/strong> Some scams might involve threats to you or your family. It&#8217;s never worth engaging in blackmail, as they could keep asking you to hand over large amounts of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Money laundering scams:<\/strong> Being paid to move money is illegal. Don&#8217;t engage with anyone asking you to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ads on social media:<\/strong> Scammers might post items like laptops or instruments on Facebook Marketplace, eBay or Gumtree and ask for payments in advance. Always meet in person and verify sellers \u2013 check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/safety-tips-facebook-marketplace\/#do-a-reverse-image-search-of-the-item-listed\">these tips on how to stay safe using Facebook Marketplace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three simple steps to avoid scams<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stop<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take your time before sharing personal info or sending money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trust your gut \u2014 if it feels off, it probably is<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scammers may pretend to help you verify your identity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Check<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Could this message or call be fake?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask a friend or family member for advice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t click links or reply without checking authenticity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use official websites to verify contact numbers and don&#8217;t just call back<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If unsure: say no, hang up or delete<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use two-factor authentication and update passwords regularly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Act fast if something feels wrong<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact your bank immediately if you\u2019ve lost money or shared account info<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reach out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idcare.org\/about-idcare\/what-is-idcare\">IDCARE<\/a> for advice and support on how to respond to data breaches, scams, identity theft and cyber security concerns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report scams to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scamwatch.gov.au\/about-us\">Australian Cyber Security Centre<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyber.gov.au\/report-and-recover\/where-get-help\">police<\/a> if you need immediate support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check for the latest scams or warn others via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scamwatch.gov.au\/about-us\">Scamwatch<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need support?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been impacted by a scam and have already reached out to the authorities, you might want to access further support through La Trobe.
