This is where Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) play a critical role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is an AED?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable, user-friendly device designed to deliver an electric shock to the heart when it detects a life-threatening arrhythmia, such as ventricular fibrillation. This shock can help restore a normal heart rhythm and potentially save a person\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why AEDs are important <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Life-Saving potential:<\/strong> Time is crucial during cardiac arrest. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by about 10%. An AED can provide the life-saving shock needed before emergency medical personnel arrive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ease of use:<\/strong> Modern AEDs are designed to be simple and intuitive, even for individuals with no medical background. Here are practical tips for staying informed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Know where to find an AED at La Trobe<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ad2f72ca wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>The most important thing for you to know is the location of your closest unit because the earlier an AED can be applied to a patient, the greater their chance of survival from a sudden cardiac arrest. Review your nearest locations: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/emergency\/planning\/defibrillators\">https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/emergency\/planning\/defibrillators<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Be aware of signage<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for universal AED signs &#8211; a heart with a lightning bolt &#8211; in public places and on the doors of La Trobe buildings that have an AED inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Use an AED<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using an AED is straightforward, and most devices provide clear instructions. However, here are the general steps:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AED.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51520\" style=\"width:246px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AED.png 300w, https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AED-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AED-150x200.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">It&#8217;s important to know the location of your closest AED unit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ensure safety:<\/strong> Check the scene for hazards and confirm that the person is unresponsive and not breathing or only gasping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Call for help:<\/strong> Dial emergency services immediately or ask someone else to do so.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prepare the AED:<\/strong> Turn the device on and follow its prompts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attach pads:<\/strong> Expose the chest and apply the pads as shown on the AED. One pad goes on the upper right side of the chest, and the other on the lower left.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Analyse heart rhythm:<\/strong> Ensure no one is touching the patient while the AED analyses the heart rhythm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deliver shock if advised:<\/strong> If the AED advises a shock, make sure everyone is clear of the patient and press the shock button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resume CPR:<\/strong> Continue CPR (30 compressions and 2 breaths) until the AED instructs otherwise or emergency responders arrive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be prepared &#8211; complete training<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Defib Ready:<\/strong> Register for the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/r\/tjGsfWzbxf\">La Trobe Defib Ready Presentation<\/a> being held at the Bendigo Campus and online on 23 July 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This session will give you all the information you need to use an AED during a cardiac emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Bendigo Campus Room TBC or via zoom for those that are unable to attend in person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Date<\/strong>: 23 July 2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time<\/strong>: 10:30 am to 12:00 pm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cost<\/strong>: FREE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Registration &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/r\/tjGsfWzbxf\"> Sign up here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also keep an eye out for first aid and CPR courses that include AED awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AEDs are powerful tools that can significantly improve survival rates for sudden cardiac arrest victims.
