Recent Bachelors of Business (Marketing) graduate Sampada Sood shares her life-changing semester exchange experience in the United States: the good, the challenging and the amazing<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the opportunity for an exchange program came up, I found myself hesitant. The thought of stepping out of my comfort zone and into an unfamiliar environment was daunting. However, my parents, always my biggest motivators, encouraged me to take the leap. They reassured me that this would be an invaluable experience, even if it was challenging. Their words stayed with me: ‘If nothing else, you will still learn something new’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had the privilege of attending the University of Oregon, nestled in the picturesque city of Eugene. The university stood out for its lush green campus and the strong sense of community. From the moment I arrived, I felt an overwhelming sense of warmth and acceptance. The students, faculty and staff were incredibly welcoming, always eager to lend a helping hand or share a friendly conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I first arrived in the United States for my exchange program, I faced challenges I hadn\u2019t fully anticipated. One of the most difficult aspects was adjusting to life with my host families. While they tried to be accommodating, the living arrangements and instances of proselytizing made the experience uncomfortable for me. I felt out of place and struggled to find a sense of belonging in this unfamiliar setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These initial difficulties were overwhelming and left me feeling isolated. However, the university became my refuge. The staff and faculty were incredibly understanding and compassionate. When I shared my concerns, they took immediate steps to support me. They didn\u2019t just offer words of encouragement\u2014they acted. They worked quickly to remove me from the uncomfortable situation with my host families and ensured I had a better living arrangement moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most unforgettable experiences was spending Christmas and New Year\u2019s in New York City. The city was alive with festive energy, its streets adorned with dazzling decorations, and iconic landmarks like Rockefeller Center lit up for the season<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
My exchange experience in the United States was filled with incredible cultural moments that left a lasting impression on me. One of the most magical highlights was experiencing a white Christmas for the first time. Coming from a country where snow is a rarity, waking up to a blanket of snow on Christmas morning in New York felt surreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another enriching aspect was meeting and making friends with fellow exchange students, particularly from France. Our conversations gave me insights into their culture, traditions and way of life. It was fascinating to compare notes about our home countries and explore the similarities and differences in how we approached everything from food to celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n
\nSampada<\/em> immersed herself in the diverse and unique culture to be found in the US<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
I also got to attend the infamous American college parties, an experience that lived up to its reputation. It was a fun and unique way to immerse myself in the social side of university life, interact with locals, and understand the vibrant energy that defines the college experience in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Traveling outside my host city was one of the most enriching parts of my experience, and each destination left its mark on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Los Angeles, I was captivated by the vibrant energy of Hollywood, the picturesque beaches of Santa Monica, and the endless sunshine that gave the city its charm. Las Vegas was an entirely different world\u2014a dazzling spectacle of lights, entertainment and excitement. San Francisco\u2019s Golden Gate Bridge, the historic charm of Alcatraz and the lively neighborhoods like Chinatown gave me a glimpse of the city’s unique character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A trip to Washington, D.C., provided a more historical and reflective experience. Walking among the monuments and visiting the museums of the Smithsonian made me appreciate the rich history and governance of the United States. Seattle, on the other hand, offered a mix of urban sophistication and natural beauty, with highlights like the Space Needle and the peaceful views from Pike Place Market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the most unforgettable experiences was spending Christmas and New Year\u2019s in New York City. These travel experiences added depth to my exchange journey. They allowed me to witness the diversity of the U.S., explore its unique regional cultures, and create memories that I will cherish forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An exchange program is not just about what you learn in classrooms; it\u2019s about the personal growth, the adventures and the relationships you build along the way.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
For students considering an exchange program, my biggest advice is simple: don\u2019t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The experience might feel overwhelming at first, but it\u2019s in those moments of uncertainty that you grow the most. Embrace the new environment, be open to challenges and trust that every step you take will shape you into a more confident and adaptable person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talk to as many people as you can and make an effort to build connections. Whether it\u2019s fellow students, locals, or other exchange participants, each person has a unique story to share. These conversations not only enrich your understanding of the world but also create friendships that can last a lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While academics are an important part of the program, remember that the exchange is about more than just studying. Explore your host city and beyond\u2014immerse yourself in the culture, try the local cuisine, attend events and visit landmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lastly, don\u2019t forget that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Make the most of it by staying curious, being proactive, and saying yes to new experiences. An exchange program is not just about what you learn in classrooms; it\u2019s about the personal growth, the adventures and the relationships you build along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exchange program had a profound impact on my future goals, especially as someone pursuing a career in marketing. It opened my eyes to the endless opportunities that exist in global markets and the importance of understanding diverse audiences. Experiencing different cultures firsthand made me realize just how varied consumer behavior can be across regions, emphasizing the need for adaptability and creativity in crafting marketing strategies that resonate with different groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the most significant takeaways was the boost in my confidence. Being in a completely new environment pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me how to navigate unfamiliar situations with ease. Before the program, initiating conversations or speaking up in group settings felt intimidating. But engaging with people from diverse backgrounds during the exchange helped me overcome those hesitations. Now, I feel much more comfortable starting conversations, building relationships and presenting my ideas with clarity and confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
