Even though AI has a lot of potential, it\u2019s important to be aware of the <a href=\"https:\/\/latrobe.libguides.com\/artificial-intelligence\/traps\">risks and pitfalls<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is Generative AI?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative AI are technologies that enable computers to produce images, music, videos, or text by drawing from data sources on the internet. Tools like ChatGPT and Wolfram Alpha are generative AI tools that can assist in answering questions, solving mathematical problems and generating ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the risks?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI assistance apps often produce information that is not reliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Content produced by AI often does not reference the original source meaning if using it in an assignment, you could unintentionally <a href=\"https:\/\/latrobe.libguides.com\/academic-integrity\/plagiarism\">plagiarise<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI apps store personal data, and you can read their privacy policies to find out more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some &#8220;do\u2019s&#8221; and &#8220;don&#8217;ts&#8221; to help you navigate these risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use AI responsibly as a helpful study tool to assist you with summarising lecture notes, creating study prompts, flashcards and understanding concepts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be mindful of the information you enter into AI applications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid sharing any sensitive, personal, or confidential data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are experimenting with apps like Copilot, ensure that you do so in a manner consistent with this advice.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware that applications may contain terms and conditions that lead to your data being stored. This could be other information that is not directly connected to the application.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek advice, check out the Library\u2019s guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/latrobe.libguides.com\/artificial-intelligence\/introduction\">using Artificial Intelligence responsibly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add personal details or research data into AI tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rely too much on AI, it can lead to work being classified as AI-generated.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure about using Generative AI in your assessments, check with your lecturer or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/library\/study-and-research-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book\u202fan appointment<\/a>\u202fwith an Academic Skills and Language Advisor or Librarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tips for using AI The use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools like ChatGPT or Copilot has become very common, and there are many ways of using it for your studies.
