It&#8217;s important to be aware of your own safety and take precautions to keep safe. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/students\/support\/wellbeing\/services\/safer-community\">Safer Community<\/a> has put together some useful safety tips to help you stay safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal safety tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On campus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save the number for Campus Security in your phone (<strong>03 9479 2222<\/strong>) and call if you need assistance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When studying late, walk with friends or call for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/security\/uni-safe\">Uni-Safe escort<\/a> (<strong>03 9479 2222<\/strong>), available at Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo and Melbourne (Bundoora) campuses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Park in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/transport-central\/car-parking\">University car park<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using public transport<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan ahead: check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptv.vic.gov.au\/journey\/\">public transport timetables<\/a> in advance to familiarise yourself with the route<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sit strategically: for example, at night, sit near the driver on the bus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of emergency assistance buttons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you feel uncomfortable, consider moving or alerting the appropriate authorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If travelling alone, tell someone your schedule<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep valuables secure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In public<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Become familiar with your surroundings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your essentials (i.e. phone and wallet) close to your body<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave valuables at home, e.g. your passport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your personal information private, such as your address<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your phone charged or if your battery is flat, Telstra payphones provide free phone calls within Australia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notice safety features, CCTV camera and police, security or other staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Going out at night<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan your path: prepare for your travels by arranging transportation in advance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritise safety: safeguard yourself by refraining from accepting rides from unfamiliar individuals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equip yourself: arm yourself with safety tools to promptly call for help or send your location to a trusted friend<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel with a friend or group where you can<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walk on footpaths, crossings and in well-lit areas where possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assert your boundaries if you feel threatened, seek assistance from bystanders or promptly call the Police (<strong>000<\/strong>) for support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At home<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always close windows and lock all doors when you leave the house and go to sleep at night<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conceal valuables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider leaving a light on when out at night, for example, installing a sensor light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assert your boundaries by exercising caution with unfamiliar individuals requesting entry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain your privacy by minimising the amount of personal information shared on social media platforms about where you live<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install a smoke detector, have a fire plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a trusted neighbour collect your mail if you&#8217;re away<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If hiding a key outside, consider having a lockable key box<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider an alarm or CCTV to deter intruders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/being-safe-and-respectful-online\/\">online safety<\/a> and where you can get support if you experience inappropriate or harmful behaviour online<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Further support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immediate support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/security\">Campus Security<\/a><\/strong>: Phone <strong>(03) 9479 2222<\/strong> to request a uni-safe escort, report a concern or incident, or seek emergency assistance on campus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.triplezero.gov.au\"><strong>Emergency call service &#8211; Triple Zero<\/strong><\/a>: national emergency call service for Police, Fire and Ambulance. Phone <strong>000<\/strong> in an emergency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reporting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/students\/support\/wellbeing\/services\/safer-community\">Safer Community<\/a><\/strong>: a free, confidential support service for La Trobe students and staff to report concerning, threatening, inappropriate or uncomfortable behaviour they may have experience or witnessed at the University.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crimestoppersvic.com.au\">Crime Stoppers<\/a><\/strong>: national crime reporting organisation.
