{"id":39084,"date":"2025-04-03T14:00:15","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T03:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/?p=39084"},"modified":"2025-04-03T14:11:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T03:11:02","slug":"tackling-the-centrelink-beast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/mylatrobe\/tackling-the-centrelink-beast\/","title":{"rendered":"Tackling the Centrelink beast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We know it can be confusing trying to understand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/centrelink?context=1\">Centrelink<\/a> entitlements and what payments you&#8217;re eligible to receive \u2013 which is why we&#8217;re here to share some helpful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main payments that students might be eligible to apply for are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/youth-allowance\">Youth Allowance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/austudy\">Austudy<\/a>, but you might be eligible for other types of payments depending on your circumstances. It&#8217;s also important that you check that you&#8217;re getting all of the entitlements you&#8217;re eligible for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get started:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When trying to figure out what payments you&#8217;re eligible for and how to apply, you should start by using with the Centrelink online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrelink.gov.au\/custsite_pfe\/pymtfinderest\/paymentFinderEstimatorPage.jsf?wec-appid=pymtfinderest&amp;wec-locale=en_US#stay\">Payment and Service Finder<\/a>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check that you&#8217;re making the most of all your entitlements. There are different eligibility requirements for each type of payment and supplementary payments such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/how-much-rent-assistance-you-can-get?context=22206\">Rent Assistance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/higher-rates-youth-allowance-when-living-away-from-home-students-and-australian-apprentices?context=43916\">a living away from home allowance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/student-start-up-loan\">Student Start-up Loans <\/a>and of course <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/health-care-card?context=21981\">a concession Health Care Card<\/a>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To get an overall sense of payment rates and requirements, check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-03\/co029-2503.pdf\">complete guide to Australian Government payments<\/a>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling more confused after looking at everything? We recommend registering for a free, confidential appointment with a La Trobe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/students\/support\/wellbeing\/services\/financial-counselling\">Financial Counsellor<\/a>. They can help you navigate Centrelink and understand your entitlements, as well as any exceptions that might apply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helpful information to be aware of:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While you&#8217;re generally not considered independent of your parental income for Youth Allowance assessment purposes until you&#8217;re 22 years of age, there are some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/youth-allowance-income-and-assets-tests?context=43921#parentalincome\">limited exceptions to this rule<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/students\/support\/wellbeing\/services\/financial-counselling\">Book in with a Financial Counsellor<\/a> if you want to find out more.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep in mind that if you&#8217;re on Youth Allowance or Austudy, you can earn up to <strong>$528 a fortnight<\/strong> without your Centrelink payment rate being impacted.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can ask for an explanation or review of a Centrelink decision if you lodge an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-11\/ss351-2212en-f.pdf\">SS351<\/a> within 13 weeks of being given notice of the original decision. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/students\/support\/wellbeing\/services\/financial-counselling\">Financial Counsellors<\/a> can also advise and support you in lodging this form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chat to a Financial Counsellor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Want help understanding your options when it comes to Centrelink or advice on any other financial issues?
