Why Orientation is a must-do to kick off semester 2

Written by ASSC College student Paige Voss.

Whether you’ve just started university, or heading into your second semester, orientation is one of the most important events to attend. Undoubtedly, starting university is nerve wracking in its own right, so heading down and getting involved in the O week activities is the best way to overcome what can be a daunting experience.

I’ll put it simply, at orientation there is a lot going on. People everywhere, clubs and societies, sporting clubs, food trucks, student support and lots of freebies. It can all be quite overwhelming, I mean, there are multiple people trying to tell you all different things and you’re definitely lost- that’s something that you can be sure of.

But O week is heaps of fun, and it’s important not to think of it as just a ‘day of uni’ but a fun day that you can spend with your friends. There are so many different activities, seminars and academic sessions that you can undertake or even just grab some lunch and get your bearings– at the Bundoora campus, it seems to be never-ending!

However, O week is a great opportunity to get to know your classmates, classrooms and get that head start on what is required of you this semester. If you are starting your first semester, there are also compulsory activities that you can get involved with which are hosted by your school. Again, this is how you can get an insight into the semester ahead– it never hurts to be ahead of the game!

O week for semester two begins Monday 22nd July with various activities across La Trobe’s campuses to welcome new students. With classes returning on Monday 29th July, attending the O week festivities is an easy way to get back into the swing of things. If you’d like to get a head start on planning your O week schedule, make sure you keep up-to-date with all of the times and events at the Orientation website.

Starting semester 2, there are also a range of activities open for all students!

  • La Trobe Student Union Clubs and Societies Mid-Year festival, Thursday 1st August 11am-2pm at the Sports Centre.
  • #HowtoUni workshop, Wednesday 7th August, 1.30pm -2.30pm, Donald Whitehead building, room 118.
