Melbourne / Top 4 reasons to join La Trobe Student Union (LTSU)

If you’re a new or returning student at La Trobe this year, you can reap some fantastic rewards by joining your student union.

Whether it’s through taking part in LTSU events, support programs or volunteering, there are plenty of opportunities to make new friends, get your creativity flowing and enjoy all the perks of #unilife.

So, what is LTSU?

The La Trobe Student Union (LTSU) is your peak representative body for students, run by students. LTSU represents our Melbourne campus, and its membership also covers our Mildura and Shepparton campuses.

Our regional campuses are represented by the Mildura Students’ Association, Shepparton Students Association, Wodonga Student Association and Bendigo Student Association.

There’s also the International Students’ Association and Mature Age Student Organisation, so there’s something for everyone!

How do you join?

You can join the LTSU by hitting up their website and choosing the level of membership you’d prefer. There’s gold, silver and bronze, and each has a bunch of different perks.

At the Melbourne Campus head to the LTSU space on level 2 of the Agora to sign up for membership in person, or keep an eye out for opportunities during O-Week.

If you swing by the LTSU space in the Agora, you’ll nab yourself a free 2019 diary too, which is an absolute treasure-trove of need-to-know tips for students.

We spoke with the 2019 President of the La Trobe Student Union (LTSU), Abood Shehada, to get the low down on what LTSU is all about and why you should join.

LSTU President Abood Shehada shares the benefits of joining your union.

“Your years at university will be the best years of your life. You will make friendships that last for life and you will develop skills that you will use each and every day. So don’t wait until the last minute – get involved through the LTSU in our vibrant and exciting campus life.”

Abood Shehada, LTSU President

1. Free weekly services

“We run free weekly services, which are the Chill Out Trolley on Monday nights in the Library, and head down to the Agora on Tuesday for a BBQ or Wednesday for breakfast and our ‘Late Night Eats’ dinner service,” said Abood.

“We also offer students free advocacy and financial and legal counselling in case you find yourself with an academic problem or in financial hardship. We also advocate to the University on policy changes.”

With more than 90 clubs and societies, and free events on campus, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved and meet new people.

2. Free events

“Wherever you see an LTSU marquee or people walking around with purple shirts, come along and say hello. We’re usually running an exciting event which involves us handing out free stuff. We run different events throughout the year, including Orientation Week, Clubs and Societies Festival, Stress Less Week, and Back to Uni and End of Exams parties!

“The LTSU also has over 90 clubs and societies. No matter what you are interested in, there is something for you. If you can’t find a club you are interested in, then start one!”

3. Volunteering opportunities

Volunteers are a massive part of La Trobe Student Union. They are the backbone of Clubs and Societies, Student Theatre and Film, welfare and events and activities on campus!

Taking up volunteering opportunities opens you up to a diverse community that are looking to meet other students, upskill, receive training and rewards, and add to their resume.

We also have a massive volunteering program. We run different trips to different areas in Victoria!”
