The two key parts of Semester 2 Orientation – explained

First of all: Welcome to La Trobe! We’re really excited to welcome you to our community for what we know will be a rewarding study experience.

Orientation is the first step to success at University. It’s your chance to get on top of any remaining questions and start building relationships with your teachers and classmates.

Things might look a little different this year as we continue responding to the challenges of COVID-19.

But there’ll be no less opportunity to meet your peers and staff members, get comfortable with your courses and subjects, or ask important questions about your first Semester at La Trobe.

Here’s our two-step guide to getting the most out of your Orientation experience!

Explore the virtual events in the Orientation Planner

Since we can’t come together on campus, we’re moving Orientation online. There are all sorts of terrific virtual events happening to help you wrap your head around La Trobe!

Some of those events are compulsory: for example, your Course Essentials session where you’ll meet the teachers and co-ordinators specific to your course.

You’ll know what events you must attend because they’ll automatically be added to your personalised plan when you register using the Orientation Planner.

Head there now to start plotting out your Orientation and you’ll be able to browse the long list of useful and fun sessions that are available.

Among the highlights are:

  • heaps of IT starter classes, helping you work through the different online systems we use at the Uni;
  • Our Academic Skills 101 masterclass, called One Step Ahead;
  • Employment how-to’s for those of you who are also in the market for a new job;
  • An introduction to our Study Abroad opportunities (yes, you can still plan to travel overseas with your degree!);
  • Plenty of social opportunities, like an inter-campus trivia contest and an online dance party complete with DJ.

Work through the LMS Online Orientation module

We’ve put our heads together to think about all the things you need to know about La Trobe before Day One of classes, and put that information together in one handy place.

Introducing the LMS Online Orientation, an step-by-step online guide to University life and study.

This module is all about getting you confident with the way La Trobe works before commencing your studies: everything from creating a study timetable, getting familiar with the library or learning where you to access study and wellbeing support services.

You’ll even find links to another super-useful LMS module: Your Guide to Studying Online. Until it’s safe to return to campus, most of our subjects will happen remotely this semester, so it’s good to get some tips about how to make the most of online study.

Remember, if you need a question answered or a word of friendly advice this semester, help is never more than a phone call, email or Zoom meeting away.
