Has COVID affected your placements and pushed back the end of your course? You are not alone. While this only affects a few of us, others are still wrapping up assessments, as we finalise a year that could only be described as ‘tumultuous’.
I know this has been unavoidable due to COVID, and I am 100% grateful that I am progressing. But I am finding it hard to stay focussed.
It got me thinking about how we can push through finishing placements, waiting for final placements and nailing those exams. I don’t know about you, but I am tired and struggling to stay on track. It’s feeling like the semester is never going to end at this point, with three exams left to go and a few loose ends to tie up. So, how can we stay motivated?
Study with Friends
This one saves me! Just last night another student reached out and suggested some study catch ups. Thank goodness, because I find them so valuable. Not only is it more fun to have a little people time, (if that’s what energises you) but studying in a group helps, as you can spend time teaching each other concepts, discussing them, writing up notes and checking your understanding with each other. It is also a great way to catch up on anything you may have missed if you were absent during semester.
Plan and Divide up your day
Break up your study day. Don’t sit for hours and hours when you are already a little tired trying to cram. Chunk it up and take lots of breaks. You will know what works for you.
I keep each subjects’ notes in their own piles. They each have study cards that I can take with me to review during my breaks at work. I make a plan at the beginning of each week, accounting for work and family commitments and I keep it. This helps to reduce my stress around study. I still check emails, plan my meals. Once an exam is over, those notes are gone, filed away for good! Being organised is easier than feeling stressed and having stuff all over the place. Give it a go – organise your day the night before and stick to it. You will be amazed at what you can achieve.
Make time for fun
I love a movie… so if I have stuck to my schedule within reason, a movie it is. For you it might be a delicious dinner out (we can do that now!), shopping (it is an option!) or hanging with friends. Whatever motivates you, use it as a reward for yourself. Making time for rewards is a great way to train yourself that if you do something challenging, you will feel good after it.
We have got this! We will finish well!
