La Trobe University is proud to present the 25th GS Watson Public Lecture.

This year’s lecture explores the life and ideas of John Maynard Keynes, one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. While Keynes is best known for his contributions to economics, fewer people know that he began his academic life in mathematics, particularly probability theory.

Presented by Emeritus Professor Terrance Mills, the lecture will examine Keynes’ intellectual journey, his work on probability and the continuing relevance of his ideas today. The lecture will also uncover an intriguing Bendigo connection.

This free public event welcomes members of the community, students, staff and anyone with an interest in economics, mathematics, history or public ideas.

Gabra Biik, Wurruwila Wutja Indigenous Research Centre, will host a University‑wide broadcast event on 16 June featuring Barry Firebrace‑Briggs, a member of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.

The presentation “Gellung Warl – Treaty for Generations” will provide staff and students with an overview of the new representative and deliberative body for Traditional Owners and First Peoples in Victoria and insights into the next steps for Treaty, drawing on Barry’s experience within the Assembly.

The event supports the University’s commitment to Indigenous leadership, truth‑telling and informed engagement with matters of state and national significance.

This is a hybrid event – you can choose to attend either online or in-person at the Hoogenraad Lecture Theatre. Registrations are essential.

Got little readers at home? Join us for National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) – an annual Australian literacy event organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), bringing millions of children together to read the same picture book at the same time.

This year, NSS will take place at 12pm on Wednesday 27 May, and we’d love to invite students and their children to the David Mann Library (AW campus) to take part.

The book we will be reading is Luna Roo: the Kangaroo Baller, written by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd, and illustrated by Jake Minton.
