Students shielded from the flu with free vaccine, thanks to La Trobe’s partnership with Medibank

Winter is well and truly here, and so is the 2020 influenza season.

With COVID-19 still posing a threat to our health system’s capacity, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has emphasised that this year, it’s more important than ever for Victorians to get vaccinated against the flu.

To help protect our community, we teamed up with Medibank and SMG Health to offer free flu shots to La Trobe students – as well as students from La Trobe College Australia and Wodonga TAFE – for the very first time.

Over two weeks in May, more than 1500 students received vaccinations across our campuses in Bundoora, Bendigo, Shepparton, Mildura and Albury-Wodonga. Check out the numbers below!

  • Total vaccinations: 1562
  • Participating La Trobe campuses: 5
  • Vaccinations at regional campuses: 487

This initiative was powered by our strategic partnership with Medibank. The support of Medibank allowed us to purchase the vaccines and engage SMG Health to run the vaccination clinics at each La Trobe campus.

“It was through our partnership with Medibank that we were able to ensure a coordinated, comprehensive and successful vaccination program was offered to La Trobe students across Victoria,” says Rebecca Eaton, Senior Manager Success and Transition, who managed the program delivery.

We’ve also worked with Medibank to support our international students – not only through emergency grocery vouchers for students facing hardship, but also through two recent virtual health information sessions. These sessions – focused on nutrition tips and staying healthy at home – were designed to help our international student community stay connected and feel supported during COVID-19.
