Student Sasha’s secrets to help you focus on your goals

Hey there! I am Sasha, a student intern at MyLaTrobe. I would like to share a few of my secrets that help me focus on my goals, in the hope they help you out with yours as well. But before typing out my secrets, I thought I’d ask: what is a goal? In simple words, a goal is something that a person wants to aim or achieve for a desired result.

So, let me share my personal secrets to help you focus on your goals.

1. Have a clear idea and set your goals

It is very important to have a clear idea in your head about what you want to achieve. To achieve your dreams, you have to work on your goals. To have a goal, you need to aim for something. Ask yourself the Five W’s and question: who, what, when, where, why, (and how – not a W but hey, it fits!). When you ask yourself these questions, you will also know more about yourself and discover ways to achieve your goal.

2. Remove distractions

Distractions are like little evils; they prevent us from paying attention to a particular task. It is hard to remove distractions from our lives completely, but we can certainly avoid them. Distractions can come in many forms like noise, use of mobile phones, social media, etc. To take a step towards our goal we need to avoid them. One habit that I personally incorporated in my everyday life is this… [Pro tip]: Try and eliminate the use of all electronic products for at least an hour from the time you wake up in the morning. It really helps with your health and also reduces stress.

3. Train your brain to focus

We do not realize how important it is for us to train our brains. Our brain is a very complex organ that works without our awareness and a disciplined mind is critical for your success. One of the ways to train your brain is to avoid multitasking. Yes, that is right avoid it. Focus and concentrate on one thing at a time and give it your best shot. Training your mind to stay focused is a matter of practice. [Pro tip]: Meditation and yoga can help us focus. So, start training your brain to listen to you.

4. Look for opportunities

Opportunities are very rare, and they just come once in a while. Often, we do not notice an opportunity coming our way and when we realise, it is too late. So be greedy and grab every opportunity that comes your way and work towards your goal. If you do not get an opportunity, create one. [Pro tip]: Create opportunities that take you closer to your goal, it may be by working, studying, doing an internship like me, or building a network – just find a way.

5. Remind yourself of your goal

You need to constantly remind yourself of your goal. If you keep forgetting things (like me), write them down or keep them saved on your phone. [Pro tip]: What I do is I write it (my goal) down and take a picture of it and then save it as my phone wallpaper, so I remember every single day and work towards it. It may be silly but once you do it, you will start taking your goals more seriously.

Stay strong and keep working hard towards your goals. I hope my secrets are helpful. Good luck.
