Remembering the White Island victims

Message from Professor John Dewar, La Trobe Vice-Chancellor

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has invited New Zealanders and Australians to share in a minute’s silence today to remember victims of the deadly volcanic blast on White Island.

In a statement Ms Ardern said: “Wherever you are in New Zealand, or around the world, this is a moment we can stand alongside those who have lost loved ones in this extraordinary tragedy. Together we can express our sorrow for those who have died and been hurt, and our support for their grieving families and friends.”

I invite all students to participate in one minute’s silence to remember victims of the tragedy, including Ms Krystal Browitt who was enrolled in La Trobe University’s Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing degree program run via Melbourne Polytechnic.

The memorial will take place today at 12:11pm, which is precisely a week since the volcanic eruption began.

Professor John Dewar

Vice-Chancellor
