I honesty can’t believe it’s the middle of semester. Time really does fly when you’re having fun -and super busy! But, I’ve finally hit the half way mark of my internship (and last semester of uni), and boy is there a long way to go!
So far, I’ve learnt that opportunities are endless. At the beginning of my internship, I thought that I would be doing the same thing week in week out- I was VERY wrong!
My usual weekly day interning consists of a morning meeting with my supervisor, where we discuss the run-through of the day and the coming weeks. Writing blog posts, creating newsletters, sending emails and contacting potential story guests.
My newest, and most exciting challenge here at the Wise ASSC Blog is collaborating with the MyLaTrobe team. Every Tuesday, I have been taking over the MyLaTrobe Instagram page, with ‘Take Over Tuesdays’, where the goal is to bring my “A Day In The Life’ blog pieces to life! This has been such a daunting and exciting experience for me, but I’ve loved it so far! I get to be as creative and inventive as I can and it’s nice to see my pieces come to life on a different social media platform.
I thought I knew all of the ins and outs of Instagram- how couldn’t I? I practically live on there! But, through collaborating with the MyLaTrobe team, I’ve been shown some new and different ideas that I can put to use in the future.
My supervisor for the blog has been so helpful in allowing me to use my time interning to run the Instagram page. This means that I need to work quickly and efficiently when doing my pieces for the blog, as this is still my priority.
If taking over an Instagram page wasn’t a big enough surprise, the biggest surprise came next when I was asked to be a guest on ‘The Uni Podcast’ here at La Trobe. This is way out of my comfort zone, I usually prefer to be writing than speaking. My episode was focusing on final assessments and how to ensure that you are on track and know where to head if you’re struggling. This topic spoke to me on another level- I like to think I’m the queen of organisation. Although the experience was very daunting, I can’t wait for you all to hear the episode when it comes out!
This internship has been very rewarding so far. I think that interning is the absolute best way to get a look into real-life work and it really opens up your eyes to all of the opportunities that can come your way. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of the most lovely people, who are willing to go over and above to help me be the best I can be, and experience as much as I possibly can in such a short amount of time.
If you have the opportunity, make sure you take the chance to do an internship- you won’t regret it! You can check out what subjects might be available in your degree that offer internship opportunities- a double bonus for getting experience and subject credit.
