When Bendigo student Vi started her Bachelor of Health Sciences in February 2020, like most new school-leavers, she found the transition from high school to uni to be daunting. Luckily, Vi discovered the Learning Hub’s Orientation workshop, One Step Ahead, giving her a crash course in all things academic!
Vi says that attending the workshop was her first glimpse into the fantastic range of resources and support services that La Trobe’s Learning Hub has to offer. Now, Vi’s passion for developing her skills at uni has seen her become a straight A student. This semester, she’s joined the team of Peer Learning Advisors (PLAs) at Bendigo so she can pass on her love of learning to others!
What’s the One Step Ahead workshop?
“The name speaks for itself,” says Vi. “One Step Ahead truly gives you a head-start in learning the skills needed for successful completion of university assessments and study!”
Whether you’ve just finished high school, or are returning to study after a break, the One Step Ahead workshop can help you understand what to expect going into First Year. “Sourcing journal articles via the Library databases, paraphrasing, and referencing were all new to me,” says Vi. “Thankfully, I was introduced to the basics of these concepts during the session, having therefore incorporated these skills in my studies.”
Sounds great, how do I sign up?
Go to your Orientation planner to register for One Step Ahead. You can also browse through the Learning Hub’s other Orientation workshops – including Academic Writing for Postgrads, Studying in Australia, Turnitin Basics and more.
Any other advice for First Year students?
“Immerse yourself in the learning community,” says Vi. “Get to know your LMS and other online tools super well, your peers (in your course and beyond), the lecturers and subject coordinators, student support services and more. It will make your university experience all the more enjoyable and manageable.”
And don’t forget to drop in and see one of the Learning Hub’s friendly PLAs – like Vi! – for one-to-one study advice during the semester. The PLA drop-in service starts in Week 1 online and in Week 2 on campus. Check the Learning Hub LMS for details.
