What is the Student Excellence Academy?

The La Trobe Student Excellence Academy is a free program designed to offer a range of incentives and opportunities to students who display characteristics of excellence – this could be via your work within the community, or if you have been involved in innovative or cultural projects.

Members of the Academy are provided with professional and personal opportunities to soar beyond the scope of their degrees, as well as being able to connect with like-minded students who possess a growth mindset, and constantly strive to reach new highs.

Together, you’ll be challenged, inspired and supported as you build on your strengths and develop your leadership skills.

‘The Academy provides support and enrichment opportunities to students through the following streams/communities once admitted:

  • Academic/research
  • Community
  • Cultural
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Sport

You can apply by demonstrating your involvement in one of the following areas: Community, Culture or Entrepreneurship. Application criteria and required documents vary slightly for each of these three areas.

Applications are now open, closing Friday 26 March.

Top 5 reasons you should join the Excellence Academy

It’s no secret that, along with the prestige, there are a lot of perks to being a member of the La Trobe Student Excellence Academy. Here, we list out five benefits valued by current students of the Academy.

1. Develop your leadership skills and gain confidence

Gain opportunities to explore your passions and extend yourself into new areas. Learning from mentors, gaining insights from industry leaders and bouncing off other Academy members during events – students consistently praise the program for boosting their confidence and leadership skills.

Through the Academy I received mentoring that really boosted my confidence. I never imagined I would be representing La Trobe at a UN Peace Summit in New York — but now my mind is open to new approaches. Now I can call myself a citizen of the world.”

Rhama Jama, Bachelor of Human Resource Management

2. Connect with other high achieving La Trobe students

Make connections with other up-and-coming leaders that’ll last a lifetime. You’ll meet a diverse cohort of peers from across our campuses who are as passionate and dedicated as you. Together, you’ll be challenged, inspired and supported as you build on your strengths and develop your leadership skills.

Coming to the Academy, I realised that, like me, there are other people who are not content to sit back. This year, I’ll be representing Australia in the World Roller Games. The Academy has helped set me apart and given me the opportunity to inspire and engage others. I know when I graduate, I’ll have more than an education — I’m part of something exceptional.”

Hannah Gandy, Bachelor of Arts/Laws

3. Get VIP access to industry mentoring and tailored career support

Be the first to get your foot in the door – you never know where that door could lead. The value of priority access to careers support and mentoring opportunities can’t be understated.

If you involve yourself and take part in networking events, seminars, workshops, and discussions, you will enrich yourself and increase your career outcomes.”

Lakshmi Ganapathy, Bachelor of Creative Arts

4. Gain insights from community and industry leaders

Priority access to a range of events and opportunities will allow you to further enrich your University experience. Whether you’re chatting with the Vice-Chancellor over lunch, listening to robust debate at a Bold Thinking event or listening to industry leaders share their insights with you at seminars, there are plenty of opportunities to expand your horizons.

I’ve always been competitive, I want to drive myself further…that’s why I‘m completing my Bachelor of Business at La Trobe. But more than that, The Student Excellence Academy is giving me confidence to excel — to pursue my own interests and ideas. It’s helped me to expand my horizons.”

Robert Neumann – Bachelor of Business

5. Acknowledgment on your academic transcript

Set yourself apart at graduation with formal acknowledgement as an Excellence Academy member on your official academic transcript. It’ll be a great talking point during interviews and is the ideal way to officially acknowledge your efforts.

For years, I’ve been fascinated with how art and design help us understand physical realities. As a mature student, embarking on a new frontier in education, the Student Excellence Academy has connected me with people who share my passions — it’s given me new platforms to express my ideas.”

Aime Sacrez, Graduate Researcher
