Here are five ways the Library can make uni life a little easier.

1. Find trusted information and access software

Need to find sources for an assignment? Instead of relying on Google alone, start with the Library.

Use the Library Collections Search to find books, ebooks, journal articles, videos and other materials from your Reading Lists in one place. You also have access to subscription databases and specialist research tools, giving you access to peer-reviewed journal articles, newspapers, magazines, book reviews and other reliable sources you won’t always find through a regular web search.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? The Library may even be able to source books, journal articles and other resources from another library through its Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Service.

2. Build your study skills with workshops

Whether you’re tackling your first assignment or getting ready for exams, the Library’s free workshops can help you build your confidence.

Choose from sessions on academic writing, referencing, finding quality sources, time management, presentations, maths, coding and more. Workshops are available online throughout the year.

3. Get support whenever it suits you

Need help after hours or prefer to learn at your own pace? The Library has a range of Learning Guides available whenever you need them. These guides are designed to help you find and use a variety of resources for your study or research, including information specific to your discipline and general study skills.

Explore Achieve@Uni for self-paced learning to help you build confidence and develop your study skills. These resources give you practical advice on academic writing, study strategies, finding information, referencing and using AI responsibly.

4. Make assignments easier with practical tools

The Library has a range of online tools to help you stay organised and approach assignments with confidence.

Use the Academic Referencing Tool to create accurate citations, the Assessment Planner to map out your deadlines, or explore other study resources to help you stay on track throughout your studies.

5. Get help from real people

If you’re feeling stuck, you don’t have to figure it out on your own! Whether you need help finding information, understanding an assessment or improving your academic writing, the Library team are here to help.

Our expert team provide support at every campus and online, depending on your needs:

• Academic Skills Advisors for writing, language, and thesis support (available via appointment)
• Peer Learning Advisors (PLAs) for study tips and assessment help (available via drop-in sessions and online chat)
• Librarians for referencing and research guidance (available via drop-in sessions, online chat and appointment)

If you’re an international student, the Library also offers study support for international students to provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to be successful at La Trobe.

Uni life tends to move faster than you’d think. One minute you’re checking your timetable, the next you’re trying to remember a census date, find an event on campus, or figure out where everyone else seems to be getting their info from. Good news: La Trobe has channels designed to help with exactly that. 

How La Trobe communicates with you 

You’ll find student stories, reminders and campus fun on MyLaTrobe across Instagram, Facebook,YouTube and weekly newsletter plus the MyLaTrobe digital screens around campus. 

Beyond socials, the MyLaTrobe Hubholds the more practical stuff likestudent articles and information on university admin, careers, events and support. Anything genuinely important, like results, Census dates or fees, usually comes straight to your student inbox.  

Finally, the New to La Trobe webpage is your go-to for everything you need to feel prepared, connected and ready to make the most of your uni experience. Another handy spot is the ASK La Trobe webpage which includes common student-related FAQs. 

What’s on 

One thing we hear a lot is students not realising how much is happening on campus. Good news: the MyLaTrobe Student Events Calendar is available  through the MyLaTrobe Hub, and upcoming events also feature in the “What’s On” section of the weekly MyLaTrobe Student newsletter, emailed every Monday from two weeks before Orientation through to the final week of exams.

Now that you know how to stay in the loop, meet a couple of actual humans bringing some of those stories to life and helping make university feel a little less like a system and more like a place you belong. This semester, that’s us: your Student Storytellers, Niharika and Shubhi. 

Niharika Malviya: Still a Yes-Sayer, now with a Badge 

Hi, I’m Niharika, your Senior Student Storyteller for Semester 2, and somehow, I’ve gone from “still figuring it out” to being trusted to help someone else figure it out too. Slightly iconic, honestly! 

Last semester, I was one of the people running around campus filming reels, trying new ideas, and re-watching our content on loop like a full-time hobby. This semester, I’m back in the senior role, continuing to do what I love while helping guide Shubhi through the chaos, creativity and fun of storytelling, and I’m genuinely looking forward to her bold ideas, infectious energy, and dance-floor confidence. 

I’m proudly in my third year of a Bachelor of Business Analytics, still on my ongoing mission to make the most of university life, which right now looks like renewing my gym membership with the hopeful intention of using it, and saying yes to volunteering and new ways to get involved. 

Delighted to be back! Here’s to helping campus feel a little more connected, one story at a time. 

Shubhi Shrivastava: Your Campus Story Scout 

Hey! I’m Shubhi, a Bachelor of Business Analytics student and this semester’s Student Storyteller. If you’ve seen someone running between classes, a student event, and a content shoot with an iced coffee in hand … there’s a good chance it was me. I love discovering new opportunities around campus, meeting people from all different backgrounds, and finding creative ways to share student experiences. 

One thing you’ll quickly learn about me is that I find it very hard to sit still when there’s something happening on campus. Whether it’s volunteering with La Trobe Leaders, helping organise events, filming content, or jumping into a new opportunity, I genuinely enjoy being involved. Some of my favourite university memories have come from simply putting my hand up and giving something new a go. 

Something else about me – I absolutely love dancing. It’s a passion I’ve had for years, and I was lucky enough to bring it to campus by organising and hosting a dance event for students during my time as a Senior Leader. That experience reminded me just how powerful shared experiences can be – whether they come through music, events, or simply stories that help people feel seen and connected. 

As your Student Storyteller this semester, I hope to share the moments that make life at La Trobe memorable – from exciting events and hidden campus gems to the everyday experiences that often become the best stories. I’m excited to bring you along for the ride, and who knows… maybe I’ll even convince you to step out of your comfort zone too.

The Wheeler Centre’s landmark writing program seeks to elevate Australian stories that aren’t being told and nurtures a new wave of writers to tell them.

Each Next Chapter writer will receive a $15,000 stipend and be paired with a handpicked mentor to work closely with them over a twelve-month period as they progress a major writing project. The program also offers meaningful opportunities for the recipients to connect with peers, agents, publishers and readers.

The Science of Running Unpacked will also act as the official launch for Run La Trobe 2026, which will take place at La Trobe’s Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus on Friday 25 September.

Bringing together experts

The panel will feature leading La Trobe research experts from the La Trobe School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport, who specialise in nutrition, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology, and strength and conditioning.

Panel members will include:

• Brody McCarthy (La Trobe University PhD Candidate in Running Biomechanics & Sessional Tutor)
• Professor Regina Belski (Professor, Associate Dean Partnerships in the School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport, and former Discipline Lead Food, Nutrition and Dietetics)
• Dr Tom West (Sport and Exercise Physiotherapist, Lecturer in Physiotherapy)
• Dr Daniel Bonanno (Associate Professor in Podiatry)

Key focus areas of the discussion

The symposium discussion will include:

• Injury prevention and load management
• Fuelling for performance and recovery
• Footwear and biomechanics
• Mental approach to training and racing
• Strength work that translates to running

In addition to the expert panel discussion, participants will receive complimentary light refreshments and snacks, as well as a guided tour through the La Trobe Sport Performance Hub lab spaces to explore how La Trobe’s range of testing programs can support their training.

Where is it happening?

Taking place at the La Trobe Sport Performance Hub (within the La Trobe Sports Park Stadium) on Tuesday 28 July from 6:00pm – 7:30pm, The Science of Running Unpacked will feature a moderated, evidence-based panel discussion aimed at providing practical takeaways for runners of all levels.

We’re improving wayfinding across campus by introducing names and colour-coding for key walkways and service lanes. If you study at La Trobe Bundoora Campus, we want you to help shape them.

Your ideas matter

As someone who uses campus every day, you know which routes are the busiest, most confusing, or the most memorable! Your ideas can help make it easier for everyone to find their way on campus, from finding classes to finding spots to relax.

This project will:

• Make getting around campus simpler and more intuitive
• Create names that reflect student life and key destinations
• Improve signage across the central academic area

Take a quick survey and get started

Answer four simple questions covering:

• Major walkways like the paths through the Agora and past the Library
• Routes between buildings, with themed naming options you can choose from
• Service lanes, where you can vote on themes or suggest your own names

There’s also space to get creative and submit your own ideas. So if you’ve got a great name in mind, we want to hear it.

The final names will be shared with the La Trobe community once confirmed. This is your chance to shape the future of campus navigation and maybe even see your own idea on a sign!

Country Universities Centres

Country Universities Centres (CUCs) are a network of community-owned study hubs that operate in more than 35 communities across regional NSW, QLD and Victoria (with more locations coming!). Our partnership with the Country Universities Centre means all La Trobe students can access their free, specialised study spaces and support – all conveniently close to your local area.

Regional University Study Hubs

Regional University Study Hubs (RUSH) provide physical spaces and support for students studying online at any Australian institution, with the goal of helping students in rural, regional and remote Australia to succeed in tertiary education without having to leave their communities. 

Northern Study Hub

Are you studying in Melbourne’s northern suburbs? The Northern Study Hub is a free, local space for you to study, connect and access support – without the long commutes or fuel costs.

Located just steps from public transport in Broadmeadows and Epping, the Northern Study Hub helps you save time and money while staying focused on your studies.

What is SSAF?

The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a compulsory fee for domestic students at most Australian universities. It is paid each study period. SSAF helps to fund non-academic services and amenities for students and supports student focussed initiatives. International students pay SSAF as part of their overall university fees. Domestic students are invoiced separately for SSAF.

Some SSAF-funded services and amenities are delivered by La Trobe, and others are delivered by the La Trobe University Student Association and the La Trobe University Student Union.

What does SSAF do for you?

SSAF funding helps to improve everyone’s experience at La Trobe. It contributes to a range of essential services and amenities across all La Trobe campuses, including student clubs, careers and employability and leadership programs, student events, student advocacy and health and counselling services.

Where are SSAF funds being used in 2026?

Our website shows how SSAF funds are being used in 2026. It’s important to note that these services are not funded exclusively by SSAF. La Trobe contributes further funding to these important projects.

You may use a few or many of these services and amenities funded by the SSAF, including:

• Employability: including Career Ready Advantage, Employability Advisors and Career Ready Ambassadors
• Student Wellbeing: including Student counselling services, Chaplaincy services and programs such as Respect at La Trobe and Safer Community
• Student Life: including Clubs and Societies, and programs that encourage your collaboration and feedback such as student leadership and volunteering, International Student Travel Concessions and Student Events and Engagement
• Study Support: including Library Services such as the Learning Hub and learning support, Peer Learning Advisors and course specific student advising and support
• Student Representation: on all campuses including La Trobe Student Association and La Trobe Student Union
• La Trobe Sports: including the provision of sports services including gym access, Uni Games and subsidies for local sport through La Trobe Sport

Every year, your feedback helps us decide how SSAF money should be allocated and spent. We do this through:

• Student Leadership Group 
• SSAF email and feedback form 
• Student Services and Amenities Group (SSAG) 

Under the Student Services, Amenities, Representation and Advocacy Guidelines, the University has a formal process of consultation with democratically elected student representatives and representatives from major student organisations at the University, to ensure that you have a say in how SSAF funds are allocated and spent. 

You will start to notice stickers around your campus highlighting activities and services that are funded by SSAF.

Explore the SSAF-funded activities and services available to you, and don’t hesitate to share your feedback on how SSAF should be allocated and spent.

This policy explains what happens if your personal or strongly-held beliefs conflict with your course requirements.

As part of the review, the new draft:

• now covers both coursework students and research students (including research activities)
• explains and clarifies what “conscientious beliefs” means
• gives better guidance on how the University considers requests for accommodations
• clarifies when accommodations may not be possible
• formalises steps for reviews, complaints and record-keeping
• better aligns with other University policies and legal requirements

What is included in SSAF?

SSAF is student money. It is paid by almost every student at the University and supports valuable services and delivery partners, including:

• Employability programs
• Student wellbeing
• Student engagement and inclusion
• Study support
• Food relief
• Student‑led organisations
• Legal advice and financial counselling

Each year, students are consulted to understand their experiences with these services and their priorities for the future. If you’re interested in attending, please complete the brief form below and select the timeslots that best suit you. All students who participate will receive a $50 voucher.
