From time to time, you might have concerns with an aspect of uni life, from a problem with your subjects to an admin decision that impacts your enrolment

It’s important you know that support is available and what to consider when submitting a complaint.

That’s what the Student Complaints Office is here for. The Student Complaints Office provides a fair and confidential avenue for managing any concerns that you have at the University, with the goal of providing you with a positive experience at La Trobe.

The Student Complaints Office ensure that correct policy and procedures are followed, helping to provide a fair and equitable experience for all students.

What you can raise concerns about

The student complaints process may be used to raise concerns or submit complaints about:

service delivery/administration issues, including University facilities

matters of process related to the University experience

academic standards and educational quality issues

third parties providing services on behalf of the University, such as contractors, education agents and third party providers, including those individuals and organisations supervising student placements and student accommodation.

The student complaints process does not include complaints about inappropriate conduct or behaviour by students, staff or third parties. For all conduct and behaviour concerns, please contact Safer Community.

How the formal complaints process works

Step 1: Attempt to resolve the matter with the relevant person, department or team

The Student Complaints Office recommends that the first thing you should do if you have a concern is to contact the appropriate area to seek a resolution. This will most likely involve a discussion on the matter directly with the person, department or team that you are experiencing the grievance with.

Although this may sound intimidating, learning to resolve issues and discuss concerns is a crucial skill that you can take with you throughout many parts of life. Our guide to conflict resolution may help you to attempt to resolve your issue if you are feeling unsure.

You may choose to raise your concerns with one of the student support areas. These teams may be able to provide you with advice on how to approach resolving your issue and what options are available to you. You can find a full list of support options on the Student Support Policy webpage, which include:

Academic Coordinators

Accessibility

ASK La Trobe

Wellbeing Services

Indigenous Student Services

Safer Community

Assessment Adjustments

Student Advising

There is also support available to you through the Advocacy service. The Advocacy service is free, independent from La Trobe (and the Student Complaints Office) and available to all students, no matter where you’re located.

You may wish to consider submitting a formal complaint if:

you don’t feel comfortable engaging with the relevant person or area

you have attempted to resolve your concerns and are unhappy with the outcome

Step 2: Submit a formal complaint

You will need to put your complaint in writing and submit it via the online complaints form. The Advocacy service can provide support with this step.

Make sure you include as much relevant information as possible, which might include:

Date and time

Involved persons (if there are any)

Location (e.g. if it was online or on-campus)

Is this the first time the issue has occurred?

We recommend you include the resolution that you want within the form. Try to think about what you really want and what can reasonably happen. This may include, but is not limited to:

an administrative error being corrected

a solution being negotiated and implemented

referral for disciplinary action

an apology

When you submit a formal complaint, you have the option to remain anonymous. However, submitting anonymously may restrict the outcome of your complaint and how the University can help you.

It is important to submit complaints as soon as possible. University policy states that concerns need to be submitted within 12 months of the incident. Exceptions may sometimes be possible in exceptional circumstances.

Once the Student Complaints Office receives your formal complaint, it may be referred to the relevant team at La Trobe for an appropriate investigation.

The Student Complaints Office may identify your complaint as serious or complex and refer your concern to other parts in the University, such as Legal Services or Human Resources.

The Student Complaints Office will contact you within 10 business days of submitting your complaint to provide you with more information on the status of your formal complaint, as well as how long certain processes may take to complete.

Step 3: The outcome of your formal complaint

When the time comes to receive your formal complaint outcome, there are a few key things to remember:

The outcome depends on what your complaint is about – it will differ depending on the context of your formal complaint.

As per University policy, you will be notified of the outcome via your student email.

The complaint will either be substantiated, partially substantiated or not substantiated. Substantiated means there was information or evidence to support your concerns.

You have the right to request a review of the outcome. You can do this through the University Ombudsman according to the provisions of the La Trobe University Ombudsman Statute 2009.

If you aren’t satisfied with the outcome after requesting a review, you can explore external avenues to lodge a complaint. These include (but aren’t limited to) the National Student Ombudsman, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, Victorian Privacy Commissioner or Victoria Police. Some external agencies may require all internal avenues to be exhausted before they can investigate.

Please note: if a complaint is accepted for investigation by an external organisation, the University will normally suspend any in-progress investigation until the external investigation has been completed and all reports submitted.

Looking after your wellbeing is an important part of university life, and sometimes the hardest part is knowing where to start. To make it easier to connect with support, Wellbeing Services are bringing the support directly to you through new Wellbeing Outposts at the Bundoora campus.

These outposts are relaxed drop-in spaces where you can chat with a member of the Wellbeing Team. Staffed by qualified social workers with experience in supporting university students, these outposts provide a space to ask questions or get help finding the right types of support if you need it.

Indigenous Student Services, Ngarni-gi Bagora Centre – Wellbeing Outpost:

Wellbeing staff are now available at the Ngarni-gi Bagora Indigenous Centre for First Nations students fortnightly on a Thursday between 10am and 2pm.

This outpost creates a welcoming space to connect informally with a Wellbeing professional, learn about available supports, and get help navigating services both at La Trobe and in the wider community. Here you can receive wellbeing information, talk through concerns, or be supported to connect with the broader Wellbeing Services team if needed.

This initiative strengthens collaboration between Indigenous Student Services and Wellbeing Services, helping ensure culturally supportive and accessible wellbeing support for First Nations students.

Living at La Trobe, Bundoora – Wellbeing Outpost:

If you live in on-campus accommodation at Bundoora, wellbeing support is now even closer.

A member of the Wellbeing Team will be available at the Living at La Trobe offices on a fortnightly basis Tuesdays between 10am and 2pm. You’re welcome to drop by for a quick chat, ask questions, or get guidance about support services available to you as a student.

Why visit a Wellbeing Outpost?

Wellbeing Outposts are designed to make support easy, approachable and accessible.

You might visit to:

Talk through a challenge you’ve been experiencing.

Talk through concerns about another person.

Ask questions about mental health or wellbeing supports.

Get help connecting with the right service.

You don’t need to be in crisis to reach out. Sometimes a short conversation, the right information, or being pointed in the right direction can make a real difference.

If you’d like to access additional support or make a formal appointment, you can also connect with Wellbeing Services online here.

Your wellbeing matters, and we’re here to support you throughout your time at La Trobe.

This blog was written by Semester 1 Storyteller, Monty.

From leaving home to finding another one.

One random afternoon, I checked my mailbox and saw something that would change everything — an offer to study at La Trobe University for my masters.

Do I leave all my friends and family behind?
Do I move to a country I’ve never even visited?
Do I stop working and start studying again?

I decided to take the leap.

Time to leave the nest.

The 12-hour flight gave me too much time to think. Every possible doubt crossed my mind. By the time I landed on campus, the excitement had quietly turned into nervousness.

Everything felt unfamiliar.
I didn’t know where to go.
I didn’t know who to talk to.

The day moved slowly, and I wasn’t even sure what the next step was.

Eventually, I stepped out for orientation.

That’s when I saw someone — confident, talking to everyone, looking like he belonged.

I walked up to him and asked,
“Hey, do you know where the Agora is?”

He smiled and said, “Yeah, I’ll take you there.”

That small moment changed everything.

At the Agora, I met new students, joined clubs, and for the first time, I felt like I might actually figure this out.

University life picked up quickly.

I learned how to navigate the LMS, manage assignments, and settle into classes. I made friends, started going out more, and spent time in apartments that slowly began to feel like home.

Those friends turned into family.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped second-guessing myself.

I started becoming who I was meant to be here.

At the end of the year, I went back home for the first time.

I saw my mum — a few more grey hairs, moving just a little slower than before.

I met my closest friends, but this time, there were jokes I didn’t fully understand. They had to explain things to me.

The home I grew up in felt familiar, but different.

Almost like a place I was visiting.

And I realised something had changed — not around me, but within me.

When it was time to return, I left with a heavy heart.

But this time, I was also happy to be going back.

Back to routine.
Back to campus.
Back to something that now felt like mine.

I had even secured a role at the university — something I was incredibly proud of.

Walking into orientation again, I found myself thinking:

What have I left behind?
Is it worth it?
Do I belong here?
Is this really home?

And then I felt a tap on my shoulder.

A nervous-looking student asked,
“Hey, do you know where the Agora is?”

I smiled.

“Yeah,” I said, “walk with me.”

And as we walked towards the same place where it all started for me, I realised:

Maybe this is what the life cycle of an international student looks like.

You arrive unsure.
You find your feet.
You build something of your own.

And one day, without even realising it,
you become the person someone else looks to for direction.

Many young people find it difficult to choose a study field after finishing high school. You may have a wide variety of interests and options, but the enormity of your study decision can weigh heavily. How can you be expected to decide your entire career at such a young age?

For Erica Gikovski, a fascination with people and how communication can benefit them inspired her to pursue psychology.

“My interest in psychology began when I saw how much difference genuine understanding and communication can make,” Erica said.

“That awareness grew into a strong desire to support others in building healthier, more meaningful lives.”

Choose something you’re passionate about

As part of her a lifelong interest in the field, Erica completed her Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at La Trobe University in late 2021. Following graduation, Erica worked in disability and mental health support roles with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

“Those experiences gave me a deep appreciation for the challenges individuals face in their daily lives, and importance of accessible, compassionate care.”

With the end goal of becoming a psychologist, Erica decided to pursue postgraduate study and began a Master of Professional Psychology at La Trobe.

“I wanted to build on that experience and develop the skills to provide more specialised psychological support.”

With coursework that encouraged critical thinking and self-reflection, Erica was inspired to shape her professional identity.

“I particularly enjoyed the subjects that focused on psychological assessment and evidence-based interventions, as they helped me translate theory into practice,” she said.

Surround yourself with like-minded people

It was during her postgraduate study that Erica’s interest in her field was strengthened, particularly thanks to the strongly shared enthusiasm of students and teachers alike.

“I was surrounded by supportive lecturers and classmates who shared the same passion for helping others,” Erica explained.

Describing her La Trobe lecturers and supervisors as ‘exceptional in their knowledge and commitment’, Erica benefitted from a supportive environment where she was challenged and encouraged to grow.

“The friendships and connections I made within my cohort were a huge source of support. We shared the highs and lows of study and placement, and encouraged each other through every stage,” shared Erica.

“The placement and academic support teams at La Trobe were always there to offer guidance and reassurance when things became challenging.”

Build practical experience with work-integrated learning (WIL)

For Erica, one of the highlights of her Master’s degree was during a placement in her fifth year of study, where she worked in Shepparton, Seymour and Yarrawonga.

“Working in regional communities gave me invaluable experience with diverse clients and a broader understanding of how psychological services can be delivered in different settings,” Erica said.

“It also strengthened my confidence and adaptability as a developing practitioner.”

Preparing students for the workforce with real-world experience is one of La Trobe’s most significant attributes. Where some universities highlight the importance of theory throughout their degrees, La Trobe focuses on giving students the hands-on, practical experience they need to enter the workforce with the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

“Completing my regional placement was a defining moment in my studies. It was a reminder of why I chose this field and how powerful it can be to connect with people in need of support,”

“The transition from student to provisional psychologist was both exciting and challenging, but the training I received at La Trobe prepared me well for professional practice.”

Find an equilibrium between life and study

When it comes to balancing work, study and her personal life, Erica highlights the importance of planning and self-care.

“I found that keeping a routine, setting realistic goals and making time for family and friends helped me stay grounded,” she shared.

Describing self-care as a ‘non-negotiable’ part of her daily routine, Erica prioritised things that helped her recharge throughout the week. These included going for walks, listening to podcasts and catching up with friends.

“It was also important to accept that balance didn’t look the same every week. Some weeks were heavier on study or placement, while others allowed for more personal time,” she said.

“Learning to be flexible and kind to myself was key.”

Find an empowering environment

After Erica completed her Master of Professional Psychology, she undertook an internship year at a private practice in Melbourne. There, Erica enjoyed the work and the relationships she built so much so that she has continued to work at the same practice.

“I find it incredibly fulfilling to build long-term therapeutic relationships and to see the positive changes that come from collaboration and trust.”

“The foundation I developed during my studies continues to guide my approach to therapy. I often draw on the reflective and ethical principles I learned at La Trobe, and I am committed to ongoing professional development as I work toward full registration as a psychologist.”

Having chosen psychology based on her strong interest in people, Erica discovered a way to challenge herself and build a career she is proud and passionate about.

“The Master of Professional Psychology was a challenging and rewarding program that offered a balance of theory, reflection and practical learning.”

Get advice from people that have been there and done that

When it comes to others who are considering postgraduate study, Erica shared some advice.

“It is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself, both personally and professionally. The journey can be demanding, but it offers incredible opportunities for growth and learning.”

Erica explained that though her experience, she believes that students need to pace themselves and practice self-compassion.

“You do not need to have everything figured out from the start. Allow yourself to learn, make mistakes and ask for support when you need it,” she shared.

“Postgraduate study requires commitment, but it also requires kindness toward yourself. When things feel difficult, I remind myself of why I chose this path and the difference that connection and understanding can make in people’s lives.”

“For me, success is not defined by grades or titles. It is about becoming the kind of professional who listens, supports and genuinely helps others create change in their lives.”
