Countdown to graduation: Keeping in touch

Things are ramping up now! We’ve come to the point in the semester when assignments are all coming together, exams are on everyone’s mind and the biggest thing – finishing! – is drawing so much closer!

So what happens to our relationship with La Trobe when we finish? Does La Trobe cease all contact with you and never want to hear from you again, like an ex-partner?

No! La Trobe has a fantastic alumni program for which every completing student automatically becomes a member. Membership is free, so you don’t even need to join. You’ll just have to update your contact details to include your personal email address so you can receive Alumni communications and opt-in for any of the Alumni Benefits.

First thing’s first: what is an alumni? (I had no idea). According to Urban Dictionary (yes, that’s an authoritative voice on these things) it’s a fancy word used to describe people that once belonged to an institution. The word alum actually means ‘to nourish’ in Latin.

Ex-staff and anyone who has completed a single subject in a course at La Trobe are also regarded as alumni.

Becoming part of the La Trobe alumni community means you get tonnes of stuff that will benefit you upon leaving uni.

Here are some examples:

Get exclusive job opportunities

You got your degree, now what? You get a job, and we’re giving you the upper hand in the job hunt with our job database, Employer Connect. Through this network, you gain access to hundreds of graduate opportunities.

Free learning

Being a La Trobe alum allows you to access thousands of online courses through LinkedIn Learning. That means you can upskill for free – another way to impress future employers and expand your repertoire of skills! We are one of the first Australian universities to be able to offer this to our alumni (worth over $300) so if you’ve not accessed for free while you’ve been a student, you still have the opportunity after you graduate.

10% off postgraduate courses at La Trobe

With COVID happening, maybe finishing your study this year isn’t what you want. Well, as an alumnus you are eligible for a 10% discount on most courses.

Events throughout the year

You like doing stuff, don’t you? Remember when we could do stuff? You’ll get the first dibs at joining events throughout the year, including lectures, professional development sessions and networking events. When you become an Alumnus, you’ll receive a monthly Alumni e-News and a monthly What’s On e-News (event-based). Since the outbreak of COVID-19, those emails are full of online events and webinars that you can still take part in.

Library membership

You know that massive database with tonnes of texts? Yep, you get that: free.

Learn Chinese cheaper

Ever wanted to learn a new language? Well the Confucius Institute offers 20 per cent discounts to La Trobe alumni, helping you speak a new language for less.

You can see all the benefits (yes there is more) here.

The Alumni and Advancement Office is also responsible for fundraising and earlier this year raised funds for the Student Crisis Appeal for students financially impacted by COVID-19!

Once you complete your studies, you’ll receive an email from the Alumni and Advancement Office showing everything you get and how to stay connected to La Trobe.

For the most part, all you need to do is put in your personal email to help La Trobe track you down after your uni email disappears.

The best part about becoming an alumnus is that it’s also completely free. So there isn’t a reason as to why you shouldn’t be keeping connected to the uni.
