Semester 2, 2026 Census date is Wednesday 12 August 2026

A Census date is the last date you can withdraw from a subject without being financially liable i.e. having to pay for the subject. Each subject of study offered at the University has a Census date. Make a note of the key dates to help you succeed..

We’ve listed six things you should know about Census date.

1. Your current subjects may have different Census dates

Did you know your current enrolled subjects may have different Census dates? Census dates vary depending on whether your subject is running in a Term, Semester or non-standard teaching period, so you may have multiple Census dates relevant to your study plan. The best way check the Census dates for different study periods is to view the Census date webpage. You can also see your subject Census dates on your Statement of Account in StudentOnLine.

2. You can drop subjects until the study period Census date without paying for them

A few weeks in and you’re just not feeling a subject or struggling to balance university and outside life? In most circumstances, you can drop a subject without penalty before Census date. Dropping a subject and getting the balance right before the Census date is definitely a better option than struggling and stressing about it for the rest of the Semester or Term. It’s also better to drop a subject before the Census date to avoid paying for it. For Semester 2, 2026 the date is 12 August 2026.

Find out how to change your subjects/enrolment.

3. Your personal details need to match up between La Trobe, the USI registry and the ATO

Make sure the personal details you have listed with La Trobe match the details you have listed with the Unique Student Identifier (USI) registry and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Your details in the USI registry need to match La Trobe the entire time you’re studying. You need a valid USI to access government assistance (such as a Commonwealth Supported Place or HELP loans) and to receive your qualifications once you’ve completed your degree.

You can check your ATO personal details by creating an account and logging into myGov. If your details don’t match up, the Government can’t verify your enrolment details. This may impact your funding, including Centrelink benefits and your ability to access HELP loans.

If you need to, you can update your La Trobe personal details via StudentOnLine.

4. Your financial arrangements need to be finalised

Make sure you pay all fees marked ‘Required’ on your Statement of Account by Census date. For Semester 2, 2026 the date is 12 August 2026.

If you’re eligible for a HELP loan, you can choose to pay your fees upfront or defer them to pay later. To access a HELP loan, you need to complete a Request for Government Assistance and have your application approved by Census date.

Any fees that can be deferred will show as ‘Optional’ on your Statement of Account. You can make upfront payments toward these optional fees until Census date. After that, any unpaid amount will be deferred to your HELP loan.

5. You can take leave without cost

There are heaps of reasons why you may need to take some time off your studies and it’s a great option if you need some time to deal with personal issues, address your finances or you simply need a break for self-care.

You may be able to take up to 12 months’ leave from your course, and if you do so before Census date, you won’t be liable for the Semester or Term fees.

Speak with your Student Advisor or course coordinator before you apply to discuss the possible impact on your study plan. One thing to consider is that taking leave from your studies can affect the duration of your course.

6. Support and advice are available for you

Every uni student has had second thoughts at some point – there are so many things that play on your mind while you’re studying, from your personal life to your studies, to the odd existential career crisis.

We have lots of support services available to assist with all of these issues when they occur. Our Student Wellbeing team can provide advice if you’re struggling personally in any way, course and subject coordinators, Library Support and Student Advisors can assist you with your studies, and our Career Ready team can assist with any careers questions that you have.

Every answer matters!

You may have heard the word Census at university, but the Australian Census is something completely different.

The National Census, run by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), is Australia’s biggest survey. It takes place every five years and collects information about the people and households living in Australia. The results help governments, councils and community organisations plan services such as transport, healthcare, education and community programs.

Who needs to take part?

Everyone in Australia on Census night must be counted, including:

Australian citizens and permanent residents

International students

Temporary visa holders

Visitors and tourists

Children and babies

If you are in Australia on Census night, you need to be included on a Census form. No exceptions!

When is the Census?

Census night is Tuesday 11 August 2026.

How do I take part?

From late July, households will receive instructions on how to complete the Census. Most people will complete it online, although paper forms are also available.

You can complete your Census as soon as you receive your instructions if you already know where you will be staying on Census night. If you are travelling, you still need to be counted wherever you are on the night.

Find out more

Visit the Australian Bureau of Statistics website for more information:

About the Census

How to complete the Census

Don’t forget, the Australian National Census is not the same as La Trobe University Census date, which relates to enrolment and study administration. The National Census is a government survey that everyone in Australia is required to participate in.

Your opinions matter to us, which is why we regularly ask for feedback on your experiences through student surveys.

You Said, We Did is how we show you that we’re listening and taking real action based on what you’ve told us.

Ready to see your feedback in action? Here are four changes we’ve made recently. You can also head to the You Said, We Did page to see more ways your voice has shaped the La Trobe experience.

You said: You want better placement support and more ways to build practical experience for your future career.

We did: We increased placement and industry project opportunities embedded in courses and strengthened pre-placement support, so you can access help in the way that works best for you.

This includes the PlaceReady LMS Hub, Welcome Zones and expanded in-person support, as well as the new Start Smart bundle to help international health students prepare before arriving in Australia.

You said: Cost-of-living pressures are impacting your studies and making it harder to manage the costs of food, placement and other study-related costs.

We did: We introduced new financial support, like the Distance Support Bursary that helps with the costs of travelling to placements.

We also made it easier to find and access financial support to help with cost-of-living pressures, including bursaries, financial counselling and food aid through the LTSU Food Bank at Bundoora and the LTSA Student Pantry at the Melbourne (City) and regional campuses.

You said: You want easier access to learning resources, study spaces and support, wherever you’re studying.

We improved access to learning wherever you’re studying through the Northern Study Hub in Broadmeadows and Epping, Country Universities Centres and other study hubs across the country.

We also improved the accessibility of resources in the LMS, making it easier to access alt text and video transcripts

You said: You want wellbeing spaces to feel calmer, more welcoming and easier to access.

We did: Supported by SSAF funds, we updated the sensory and physical environment of the Health and Wellbeing Centre to improve its comfort and accessibility, including adjusted lighting, sensory and calming resources, more accessible layouts and accessibility signage.

You said: You weren’t always sure what support is available to help you feel safe at uni, including where to go if you need help.

We launched the UniSafe app at our Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus, making it easier to get Security support when travelling around campus after dark.

We also launched our plan of how we will respond to the National Code for Gender Based Violence through Respect at La Trobe, including new programs and workshops.

You said: You want Orientation to be easier to access and fit around your schedule.

We did: We made Orientation easier to access in ways that suit you by launching on-demand sessions available online all year, welcoming online students to on-campus activities and combining key events into fewer days to better fit your schedule.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday 31 July 2026.

Love writing? Here is an opportunity you may have been waiting for.

The Wheeler Centre’s landmark writing program seeks to elevate Australian stories that aren’t being told and nurtures a new wave of writers to tell them.

Each Next Chapter writer will receive a $15,000 stipend and be paired with a handpicked mentor to work closely with them over a twelve-month period as they progress a major writing project. The program also offers meaningful opportunities for the recipients to connect with peers, agents, publishers and readers.

If you are a La Trobe student or staff member with a love for words, go ahead and send in your applications. Find more details here.

You’ve done the hard work and now it’s time to check your results! Results are officially released at the end of each Semester or Term, find out when yours will be released.

Results for Semester 1 2026 will be released on Wednesday 1 July 2026.

Where to find your results

Once your results are released, we’ll send an email to your student email address to let you know they’re ready.

To access your results in StudentOnLine, you can either<ins>:</ins>

Click on the ‘My Study’ tile and view your results under your course on the ‘Academic History’ page; or

Visit the ‘My Studies Summary’ in ‘My Summaries’, select your course and view your results in the ‘Subject and results details’ section.

In some cases, results may become visible earlier than the release date. If you check your results early and don’t see all your results, please be patient. There’s no need for you to contact ASK La Trobe or Student IT Support, your results will be released by the published results release date.

Note that your results may be amended after initial release, especially in the case of withheld or missing results.<ins></ins>

If you’re waiting for results from a different study period, check our results release page or academic calendar for dates.

Why can’t I see my grade in StudentOnLine?

Unpaid fees are the most common reason you may not see your grade. Check if you have any fee sanctions by going to the ‘My Details’ tile in StudentOnLine, then go to ‘Sanctions’ in the menu on the left-hand side. Check out our FAQ for more info.

Understanding your grades

Sometimes your grades may appear a little confusing, so we put together this resource to help you understand your grades. Find out what the letter grades or percentages mean on your coursework, and understand what common administrative codes mean.

Things to do before your next study period

If you’re continuing studies, now’s a good time to check that you’re correctly enrolled!

What to do if things don’t go as planned with your results

Let’s be real, things don’t always go as planned. You might not get the results you wanted on your assignment, and that can be disappointing.

If this is you, take some time to put together a plan to make sure you’re taking care of yourself. Here are our top strategies for how to handle failure or disappointment at results time.

If you failed a subject, read our Failing a subject – next steps FAQ.

If the subject is a pre-requisite for another subject, you will still need to pass it before being able to progress to the follow-on subject (i.e. you will need to repeat it if you do not pass).

If it’s an elective, you might choose to complete the same subject again or another subject worth the same amount of credit points.

If you believe your results are incorrect you may request a review of your marks. Requests must be made within 10 working days of results publication.

Support available

To help you achieve your best, both academically and personally, La Trobe has a number of support services available, like:

study support services, including the Learning Hubs

academic support resources and workshops, covering themes like time management and tips for successful study habits

wellbeing services, including counselling.

Calculate your WAM

La Trobe uses a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) calculation instead of a Grade Point Average (GPA). A WAM is an average mark that takes into account the credit point value of the subjects that you have completed. Learn how to calculate your WAM here.

Have questions or need help?

If you need help or assistance with any matter, please visit ASK La Trobe FAQs or speak to your subject coordinator or course coordinator.

We know that rising living costs – including fuel – may be making it harder for some students to get to campus or manage day-to-day expenses. We know this is a challenging time for many students, and we want to reassure you that La Trobe is actively responding.

We are expanding our existing services to support you with your studies.

Financial and academic support
Depending on your circumstances and course there are several supports available. If you’re feeling the impact, we may be able to support you with financial bursaries and scholarships to ease financial pressures. For students who are currently on, or about to begin placement for your studies, we are increasing our support as we recognise that placements for students can add pressure and uncertainty at this time.

Cyber criminals often use O‑Week to take advantage of new students receiving high volumes of emails.

Be especially alert over the coming weeks, particularly to emails that:

Create urgency or pressure you to act quickly

Ask you to click links, open attachments, or review shared files you weren’t expecting

Appear to come from a colleague or known contact but seem unusual

Ask you to log in, verify details, or share information outside normal processes

If something doesn’t feel right, pause and check. Even emails that look legitimate can sometimes come from compromised accounts.

If you receive a suspicious message, please:

Use the Report Phishing button in Outlook,

or contact cybersecurity@latrobe.edu.au

Common scams targeting students

Job scams: You might receive a message via text, WhatsApp or social media offering easy money or commissions for work, reviews and more. These scammers often use stolen branding to look legit. Some ask you to invest money to earn more — usually via crypto, making it hard to recover.

Student fee scams: Offers to pay your fees at a discounted rate are fake and the money won’t be lodged. Always pay your fees directly to La Trobe.

Phishing scams: Some scammers send emails or texts claiming you have a tax refund or Centrelink payment waiting for you. Don’t click these — check your MyGov account directly instead.

Bank impersonation: You could receive a call that looks like it comes from your bank’s legitimate phone number or a text that appears in the same thread as a genuine bank message, but it’s actually a scammer. Always verify contact from your bank via official channels.

Accommodation scams: Rent that seems too good to be true? It might be, especially if they ask for upfront payments.

Threat and extortion scams: Some scams might involve threats to you or your family. It’s never worth engaging in blackmail, as they could keep asking you to hand over large amounts of money.

Money laundering scams: Being paid to move money is illegal. Don’t engage with anyone asking you to do this.

Ads on social media: Scammers might post items like laptops or instruments on Facebook Marketplace, eBay or Gumtree and ask for payments in advance. Always meet in person and verify sellers – check out these tips on how to stay safe using Facebook Marketplace.

Three simple steps to avoid scams

Stop

Take your time before sharing personal info or sending money

Trust your gut — if it feels off, it probably is

Scammers may pretend to help you verify your identity

Check

Could this message or call be fake?

Ask a friend or family member for advice

Don’t click links or reply without checking authenticity

Use official websites to verify contact numbers and don’t just call back

If unsure: say no, hang up or delete

Protect

Use two-factor authentication and update passwords regularly

Act fast if something feels wrong

Contact your bank immediately if you’ve lost money or shared account info

Reach out to IDCARE for advice and support on how to respond to data breaches, scams, identity theft and cyber security concerns

Report scams to Australian Cyber Security Centre or the police if you need immediate support

Check for the latest scams or warn others via Scamwatch

Need support?

If you’ve been impacted by a scam and have already reached out to the authorities, you might want to access further support through La Trobe. Make an appointment for free, confidential Financial Counselling or get in touch with our Student Wellbeing Connect team.
