A new semester is here! Whether you’re returning to campus or starting at La Trobe for the first time, taking a few minutes to get organised now can make your first weeks much smoother.

Here’s your Semester 2 checklist.

1. Make sure you’re enrolled

Before classes begin, double-check your enrolment in StudentOnLine and make sure your subjects match your course requirements in the Handbook. While you’re there, it’s also a good idea to check your personal and emergency contact details are up to date. Learn more about enrolment here.

2. Plan your Orientation

Orientation runs from 4 – 17 July and is your chance to meet your teaching staff, connect with other students and discover the support services available throughout your studies.

Across our campuses you’ll find:

• Course Meet & Greets
• Starting Strong sessions
• Support Services Expo and Showcase
• International Meet & Greets
• Student association events, clubs and free activities

Use the Orientation Planner to build your personalised schedule before you arrive and remember on-demand Orientation resources are available 24/7!

3. Log into the LMS

Before your first class, spend a few minutes exploring your subjects in the Learning Management System (LMS) or read this handy LMS guide.

Check for:

• subject learning guides
• assessment information
• announcements from your teaching team
• lecture and Zoom links (if you’re studying online)

Getting familiar with your LMS subjects before Week 1 will help you hit the ground running.

4. Know where you’re going

Save yourself the first-day stress by checking your timetable and locating your classrooms before classes begin.

If you’re studying on campus get to know your campus maps, or take some time during Orientation to explore the buildings you’ll be using most.

5. Set yourself up for success

A little planning now can make a big difference later.

Before Week 1:

• add key semester dates to your calendar
• note assessment deadlines as they’re released
• explore Library workshops and study support
• download any software you’ll need, including Zoom if you have online classes

6. Find your people

University is about more than lectures.

Orientation is the perfect opportunity to meet classmates, join a club or society, connect with your student organisation and discover what’s happening on your campus throughout the semester.

7. Know where to get help

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

It’s also the time to make sure you don’t have any sanctions on your account, as these will usually prevent you from enrolling. Unpaid fees or library fines are the most common reason for sanctions. To check, log in to StudentOnLine, select the ‘My Details’ tile, then ‘Sanctions’ (in the left-hand menu).

What subjects should I choose?

Follow the Handbook for the year you commenced your course:

• Have a look at your course structure in the University Handbook.
• Write down the subject codes of the core and elective subjects you want to take. Use the Handbook and look at the number in the middle of the code to see if it’s a first, second or third-year subject (and so on).
• Browse the Handbook to find elective subjects if needed.
• Make sure you enrol full-time to complete your course in the expected timeframe.

What if I’m finishing my studies?

If you’re completing your course and will be eligible to graduate, please make sure your contact details are correct in StudentOnLine. This will help our Graduations team to keep in touch with you about your graduation ceremony!

Allocate+ operates in two phases:

1. Preference Entry Mode

• Opens: Tuesday 12 May 2026 for the Semester 2, 2026 timetable
• Closes: Monday 25 May 2026

During this phase, you can nominate your preferred class times for your enrolled Semester 2 subjects.

Important: It’s not ‘first-come, first-served’. Everyone who enters preferences before the deadline has an equal chance of getting their preferred times.

If you don’t submit preferences by 25 May, you’ll be automatically allocated to available class times.

2. Allocation Adjustment Mode

• Opens: Wednesday 27 May 2026 for the Semester 2, 2026 timetable
• Closes: Thursday 13 August 2026

Once this phase begins, you can manually adjust your timetable to your preferred class times if spaces are available.

Choosing your preferences in Allocate+

Before you can choose your preferences, make sure you’re enrolled in your 2026 Semester 2 subjects.

After you’ve enrolled, you may need to wait 24 hours for your newly enrolled subjects to show up in Allocate+, so try again later if you can’t see them straight away.

Missed out? If you miss entering your preferences during Preference Entry mode, you may be able to make adjustments to your class allocations (where possible) during Allocation Adjustment mode later (dates to be confirmed).

Do you receive government benefits? 

You must update Services Australia (also known as Centrelink) of any changes to your study load (e.g. changing from a full-time load to part-time) as soon as possible. You can read our FAQ for more detailed info.

Why not use part of your summer break to get ahead in your studies! This year there are more summer subjects than ever and enrolment for Summer 2025/Term 1 2026 is open now!

You can use Summer School to:

• finish university and start a career sooner
• spread out the workload to a more convenient time
• free up more time for working during the standard semester
• study a subject that could be an elective in your course
• complete a subject that you may have dropped previously (where offered)
• make up for a subject that you failed (where offered).

Dates

Check the Handbook to see which subjects are available during the Summer teaching period.

When using the Handbook search, select from the teaching period filter. Use the filter to find Summer subjects between 17 November and 13 February.

Please note you will need to complete two different searches to see all Summer subjects (i.e. one for subjects starting in 2025 and one for subjects starting in 2026).

Always double-check the Handbook to ensure that your chosen Summer subject is running. Subject instances may change at any time, without warning.
