The proposed changes have been developed to ensure the Policy aligns with recent legislative changes and La Trobe’s current operating environment, while providing greater clarity for student organisations and clubs. 

To support this, we have drafted two procedures that sit underneath the newly titled Student Organisations Policy:

• the Student Organisations Procedure – Clubs (Version 1 Draft 2)
• the Student Organisations Procedure – Recognition (Version 1 Draft 2)

Your feedback will help us refine the policy suite before it is finalised.

You Said, We Did is how we show you that we’re listening and taking real action based on what you’ve told us.

Ready to see your feedback in action? Here are four changes we’ve made recently. You can also head to the You Said, We Did page to see more ways your voice has shaped the La Trobe experience. 

You said: You want better placement support and more ways to build practical experience for your future career.

We did: We increased placement and industry project opportunities embedded in courses and strengthened pre-placement support, so you can access help in the way that works best for you.

This includes the PlaceReady LMS Hub, Welcome Zones and expanded in-person support, as well as the new Start Smart bundle to help international health students prepare before arriving in Australia.

You said: Cost-of-living pressures are impacting your studies and making it harder to manage the costs of food, placement and other study-related costs.

We did: We introduced new financial support, like the Distance Support Bursary that helps with the costs of travelling to placements.

We also made it easier to find and access financial support to help with cost-of-living pressures, including bursaries, financial counselling and food aid through the LTSU Food Bank at Bundoora and the LTSA Student Pantry at the Melbourne (City) and regional campuses.

You said: You want easier access to learning resources, study spaces and support, wherever you’re studying.

We improved access to learning wherever you’re studying through the Northern Study Hub in Broadmeadows and Epping, Country Universities Centres and other study hubs across the country.

We also improved the accessibility of resources in the LMS, making it easier to access alt text and video transcripts

You said: You want wellbeing spaces to feel calmer, more welcoming and easier to access.

We did: Supported by SSAF funds, we updated the sensory and physical environment of the Health and Wellbeing Centre to improve its comfort and accessibility, including adjusted lighting, sensory and calming resources, more accessible layouts and accessibility signage.

You said: You weren’t always sure what support is available to help you feel safe at uni, including where to go if you need help.

We launched the UniSafe app at our Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus, making it easier to get Security support when travelling around campus after dark.

We also launched our plan of how we will respond to the National Code for Gender Based Violence through Respect at La Trobe, including new programs and workshops.

You said: You want Orientation to be easier to access and fit around your schedule.

We did: We made Orientation easier to access in ways that suit you by launching on-demand sessions available online all year, welcoming online students to on-campus activities and combining key events into fewer days to better fit your schedule.

We want university life to be fun, engaging and rewarding. A time to meet new people, make friends, learn and build knowledge. That means we need the university community to be safe, respectful and inclusive for everyone.  

Unfortunately, sexual harm does occur at university. In fact, sexual harm remains a prevalent  issue across all Australian universities. That is why preventing and responding to sexual harm is a shared responsibility; one that involves students, staff and the wider university community.  
 
The 2021 National Student Safety Survey  reported that many students had little or no knowledge of what sexual harm is, where to report or seek support if they experience or witness it.  

So, what is La Trobe doing to prevent sexual harm and support students? 

The Safe and Respected at La Trobe campaign  

From Monday, 13 July, for 5 weeks, we are running an awareness campaign – Safe and Respected at La Trobe – that aims to help prevent and respond to sexual harm. 

You might see the campaign online and across La Trobe campuses, with key messages about what sexual harm is, that it is never ok, and how to seek help and support. 

Let’s be really clear, what is sexual harm?  

Sexual harm is any behaviour of a sexual nature that is non-consensual, unwanted or unwelcomed. It is behaviour that makes someone feel offended, humiliated, frightened or threatened. Sexual harm can occur in person, online or via the use of technology.   

Why have a campaign to address sexual harm?  

In raising awareness, we hope to prevent further instances of sexual harm.  We also want anyone affected by sexual harm to get the best possible support. No two experiences of sexual harm are the same. There are, however, some common reactions to trauma, along with other common challenges that can make it hard to seek help. The Safe and Respected at La Trobe Campaign seeks to address these barriers so that people can access appropriate help sooner. 

We want anyone who has experienced sexual harm to know that:  

• It is not your fault.  

• We believe you.  

• You are not alone.  

• We are here to help.  

Safer Community  

La Trobe’s Safer Community Service is a free and confidential support service for all La Trobe students and staff. If you witness or experience inappropriate, threatening or concerning behaviour, please visit the Safer Community website to contact the service. You can fill out the Report a concern form to contact Safer Community anonymously.

This year marks a significant milestone, celebrating 50 years of NAIDOC Week. For five decades, the week has honoured and elevated First Nations voices, cultures and resilience, while providing all Australians with the opportunity to participate in events, deepen their understanding and celebrate the world’s oldest continuing living cultures.

The 2026 NAIDOC Week theme, 50 Years of Deadly, celebrates the strength, leadership and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over the past five decades, while looking ahead to the future. The theme recognises the Elders, organisers, artists, activists and communities whose leadership has shaped NAIDOC into a powerful platform for truth-telling, cultural celebration and community pride. It also acknowledges the next chapter of NAIDOC will continue to be led by First Nations communities.

NAIDOC Week is a time to embrace Indigenous Australians’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of our national heritage; to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue; and to help foster a society where the contributions of Indigenous people are fully valued and respected.

At La Trobe, we remain committed to advancing reconciliation through education, research and meaningful partnerships with First Nations communities. We will continue to implement our Indigenous Strategy, support our Gabra Biik, Wurruwila Wutja Indigenous Research Centre, and work alongside our Elders Council to strengthen Indigenous leadership and outcomes across the University.
