We know that rising living costs — including fuel — may be making it harder for some students to get to campus or manage day-to-day expenses. We know this is a challenging time for many students, and we want to reassure you that La Trobe is actively responding.

We are expanding our existing services to support you with your studies. For students who are currently on, or about to begin placement for your studies, we are increasing our support as we recognise that placements for students can add pressure and uncertainty at this time.

Financial and academic support
Depending on your circumstances and course there are several supports available. If you’re feeling the impact, we may be able to support you with financial bursaries and scholarships to ease financial pressures.

If you’re unsure where to start, Student Advising or Wellbeing Services can help point you in the right direction and provide advice about your study options as you approach Census date.

Help shape the future of La Trobe.

The University is now calling for nominations for the election of a postgraduate student to the La Trobe University Council. The term of appointment will be from 29 May 2026 to 31 December 2026.

This election follows the work of the Expert Council on University Governance, established by the Australian Government to review governance standards across public universities. Its Final Report and Principles (released in late 2025) emphasise strengthened accountability, transparency, diversity of perspectives and meaningful engagement with staff and students in institutional decision making.

The La Trobe University Council has considered these Principles and is strongly supportive of their intent. In line with this, Council has resolved to expand its membership to enhance staff and student representation.

Staff membership will increase from two positions (including the Chair of Academic Board) to three (to include both an academic and professional staff member), and student membership will increase from one elected position to two (to include both an undergraduate and a postgraduate student). These changes will bring staff and student representation (excluding the Vice-Chancellor) to nearly 30% of total Council membership, representing a significant step in strengthening their voice in university governance.

As the currently elected student on the University Council for 2026 is an undergraduate student, there will now be an election for a postgraduate student for the remainder of 2026.

What is the University Council?

The University Council is the governing body of La Trobe and looks after the general direction and monitoring of the University. Its responsibilities include:

Appointing and monitoring the performance of the Vice-Chancellor

Approving the Uni’s mission and strategic direction, annual budget and business plan

Monitoring risk

Overseeing academic activity

Approving significant University commercial activities

Council members include our Chancellor, the Hon. John Brumby AO, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Theo Farrell, government appointees, La Trobe staff and student members.

So what does it take to be a student member?

Firstly, don’t worry if you haven’t been involved in student politics before. It’s not a prerequisite.

Ask yourself: Have you been on a student advisory group? Perhaps you’re a Peer Learning Advisor with a finger on the pulse of the student population? Maybe you’re an engaged student at a regional campus who wants to make sure the voices of your peers are heard? These are all relevant perspectives to bring to Council.

What is the role of the student member?

On the University Council elected members don’t represent the constituencies from which they are drawn. All members are required by law to act in the interests of the University, rather than as delegates for a particular section of the La Trobe community).

Your role would be to bring a student perspective to the University Council.

How do I nominate?

If you are interested in nominating for Council, you need to read the information on the Council website and complete the online nomination form by 12pm on Wednesday 29 April 2026.

Further information

Full details of student eligibility to nominate, the nomination process and other relevant information to help guide your decision can be found on the Council Elections webpage.

If more than one nomination is received, then an election will be necessary. It will be held online via a third-party vendor. In that event, students will be advised as to the next steps. Email elections@latrobe.edu.au if you have any questions.

Your opinions matter to us, which is why we regularly ask for feedback on your experiences through student surveys.

You Said, We Did is how we show you that we’re listening and taking real action based on what you’ve told us.

Ready to see your feedback in action? Here are four changes we’ve made recently. You can also head to the You Said, We Did page to see more ways your voice has shaped the La Trobe experience.

You said: You weren’t always sure how to get help to feel safe on campus and wanted more options to access on-campus support.

We did: We launched the UniSafe app and our plan to respond to the National Code for Gender Based Violence, including new programs and workshops.

The UniSafe app launched at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus to help you get around safely after dark. Available between 6pm and 6am, the app lets you book someone from the Security team to accompany you on foot or via vehicle. UniSafe has already supported you with more than 4,800 escorted trips this year!

You said: You want more opportunities to connect with other students, collaborate in your course and feel part of the La Trobe community.

We did: We expanded opportunities for students to connect and collaborate through initiatives such as the Student Council, student‑led clubs and activities and Student Experience Grants that support peer connection, belonging and student‑led projects.

In 2025, we launched our Student Experience Grants, awarding more than $25,000 to student‑led projects that improved the student experience. These grants empowered students like you to turn ideas into reality – creating new spaces to belong, practical tools to support learning and events that helped students to connect with each other and industry. Learn more about last year’s recipients and how their projects have made an impact.

We also continued to support connection through the Student Council and student‑led clubs and activities. There are now 80 affiliated student clubs across our campuses, which helped to organise more than 700 activities over 2025 – creating more ways to meet people, get involved and feel part of the La Trobe community.

You said: You want access to health, wellbeing and support services that fit around your study and life commitments.

We did: We introduced outside standard hours counselling appointments and expanded ASK La Trobe service hours during busy periods, so that there’s more support available when you need it most. Whether you’re juggling classes, work or personal responsibilities, we know life doesn’t always fit neatly into business hours and we’re here to support you.

You can now book free counselling appointments outside standard hours, with later sessions and flexible options that let you connect in the way that works best for you.

We also extended ASK La Trobe service hours during peak times, so help is available when demand is highest – from enrolment and fees to timetables and results, we’re here to help.

You said: Starting uni and knowing where to find the right information felt overwhelming and confusing.

We did: We rebuilt the New to La Trobe website and launched the New Student Guide to make starting at La Trobe clearer, simpler and easier to navigate, working closely with students to make sure it covers what matters most when you’re new to La Trobe.

The New to La Trobe website puts all the essential information in one place, with clear steps, key dates and support options to ensure you feel prepared, connected and ready to make the most of your uni experience. We

We’ve also created the New Student Guide – your step‑by‑step guide to everything you need to know in your first study period. From Orientation and first classes to exams and final assessments, it’s there to help you start strong and stay on track. Even if you’re not a new student, it’s a handy guide you can come back to whenever you need a reset or reminder.

Many young people find it difficult to choose a study field after finishing high school. You may have a wide variety of interests and options, but the enormity of your study decision can weigh heavily. How can you be expected to decide your entire career at such a young age?

For Erica Gikovski, a fascination with people and how communication can benefit them inspired her to pursue psychology.

“My interest in psychology began when I saw how much difference genuine understanding and communication can make,” Erica said.

“That awareness grew into a strong desire to support others in building healthier, more meaningful lives.”

Choose something you’re passionate about

As part of her a lifelong interest in the field, Erica completed her Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at La Trobe University in late 2021. Following graduation, Erica worked in disability and mental health support roles with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

“Those experiences gave me a deep appreciation for the challenges individuals face in their daily lives, and importance of accessible, compassionate care.”

With the end goal of becoming a psychologist, Erica decided to pursue postgraduate study and began a Master of Professional Psychology at La Trobe.

“I wanted to build on that experience and develop the skills to provide more specialised psychological support.”

With coursework that encouraged critical thinking and self-reflection, Erica was inspired to shape her professional identity.

“I particularly enjoyed the subjects that focused on psychological assessment and evidence-based interventions, as they helped me translate theory into practice,” she said.

Surround yourself with like-minded people

It was during her postgraduate study that Erica’s interest in her field was strengthened, particularly thanks to the strongly shared enthusiasm of students and teachers alike.

“I was surrounded by supportive lecturers and classmates who shared the same passion for helping others,” Erica explained.

Describing her La Trobe lecturers and supervisors as ‘exceptional in their knowledge and commitment’, Erica benefitted from a supportive environment where she was challenged and encouraged to grow.

“The friendships and connections I made within my cohort were a huge source of support. We shared the highs and lows of study and placement, and encouraged each other through every stage,” shared Erica.

“The placement and academic support teams at La Trobe were always there to offer guidance and reassurance when things became challenging.”

Build practical experience with work-integrated learning (WIL)

For Erica, one of the highlights of her Master’s degree was during a placement in her fifth year of study, where she worked in Shepparton, Seymour and Yarrawonga.

“Working in regional communities gave me invaluable experience with diverse clients and a broader understanding of how psychological services can be delivered in different settings,” Erica said.

“It also strengthened my confidence and adaptability as a developing practitioner.”

Preparing students for the workforce with real-world experience is one of La Trobe’s most significant attributes. Where some universities highlight the importance of theory throughout their degrees, La Trobe focuses on giving students the hands-on, practical experience they need to enter the workforce with the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

“Completing my regional placement was a defining moment in my studies. It was a reminder of why I chose this field and how powerful it can be to connect with people in need of support,”

“The transition from student to provisional psychologist was both exciting and challenging, but the training I received at La Trobe prepared me well for professional practice.”

Find an equilibrium between life and study

When it comes to balancing work, study and her personal life, Erica highlights the importance of planning and self-care.

“I found that keeping a routine, setting realistic goals and making time for family and friends helped me stay grounded,” she shared.

Describing self-care as a ‘non-negotiable’ part of her daily routine, Erica prioritised things that helped her recharge throughout the week. These included going for walks, listening to podcasts and catching up with friends.

“It was also important to accept that balance didn’t look the same every week. Some weeks were heavier on study or placement, while others allowed for more personal time,” she said.

“Learning to be flexible and kind to myself was key.”

Find an empowering environment

After Erica completed her Master of Professional Psychology, she undertook an internship year at a private practice in Melbourne. There, Erica enjoyed the work and the relationships she built so much so that she has continued to work at the same practice.

“I find it incredibly fulfilling to build long-term therapeutic relationships and to see the positive changes that come from collaboration and trust.”

“The foundation I developed during my studies continues to guide my approach to therapy. I often draw on the reflective and ethical principles I learned at La Trobe, and I am committed to ongoing professional development as I work toward full registration as a psychologist.”

Having chosen psychology based on her strong interest in people, Erica discovered a way to challenge herself and build a career she is proud and passionate about.

“The Master of Professional Psychology was a challenging and rewarding program that offered a balance of theory, reflection and practical learning.”

Get advice from people that have been there and done that

When it comes to others who are considering postgraduate study, Erica shared some advice.

“It is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself, both personally and professionally. The journey can be demanding, but it offers incredible opportunities for growth and learning.”

Erica explained that though her experience, she believes that students need to pace themselves and practice self-compassion.

“You do not need to have everything figured out from the start. Allow yourself to learn, make mistakes and ask for support when you need it,” she shared.

“Postgraduate study requires commitment, but it also requires kindness toward yourself. When things feel difficult, I remind myself of why I chose this path and the difference that connection and understanding can make in people’s lives.”

“For me, success is not defined by grades or titles. It is about becoming the kind of professional who listens, supports and genuinely helps others create change in their lives.”

Understanding your uni fees (including your Statement of Account) can feel a little confusing. One of the fees you’ll see is the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

SSAF is a really important fee that contributes to funding essential services and amenities on campus. From student events to advocacy, SSAF is more important than we realise, so here’s what you need to know.

If you’re an Australian citizen (or hold a Permanent Humanitarian Visa or other eligible Visa), you can choose to pay this fee upfront or defer it via SA-HELP (which is a kind of Commonwealth support, similar to HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP).

Visit Study Assist for more information about eligibility.

Understanding your obligation:

You will know if you need to pay SSAF by checking your Statement of Account.

Most domestic students are required to pay this fee, as mandated by Australian legislation.

International students pay SSAF too, but it is included in your tuition fee, not as a separate fee.

When to pay:

Australian citizens and holders of Permanent Humanitarian Visas are eligible to defer the fee to SA-HELP. All other students must pay the fee upfront.

To defer the fee via SA-HELP, you must submit your form by 30 June (Semester 1) or 30 December (Semester 2).

You only need to apply for SA-HELP once per course. If you transfer courses, you will need to submit a new SA-HELP form.

If you’re paying SSAF upfront, you need to pay each time you are charged the fee by the following dates.

For 2026 subjects delivered:

Between 1 Jan – 30 June (and you enrol before or on 11 March): payment date is 11 March

Between 1 Jan – 30 June (and you enrol from 12 March): payment date is the date of enrolment

Between 1 July – 31 December (and you enrol before or on 22 July): payment date is 22 July

Between 1 July – 31 December (and you enrol from 23 July): payment date is the date of enrolment

Check StudentOnLine to check your SSAF due dates.

How to pay:

Either defer the fee via SA-HELP, or pay upfront.

If you’re paying upfront, pay online by the ‘My Finances’ tab on StudentOnLine.

La Trobe provides a secure and user-friendly platform for processing payments electronically. Simply log in to your student account using your credentials and follow the prompts to make your payment. Ensure that you have your payment details, such as credit card information or bank account details, readily available.

What happens if I don’t pay:

Students must pay the SSAF by the relevant payment due dates in order to avoid a sanction on their student account. If you have a sanctions, you will be prevented from re-enrolling into new subjects, accessing your results and even graduating.

Utilise the resources and support services available to you and don’t hesitate to seek assistance when needed. With a proactive approach, you can ensure smooth and hassle-free SSAF payments, allowing you to focus on your academic journey, work and social life with peace of mind.

Discontinuation of Enrolment and Leave of Absence:

If you have applied to discontinue your course or for a leave of absence, once the request has been approved, please run an updated Statement of Account to confirm whether there are any outstanding fees and make payment if required.

If you have questions about SSAF, visit the SSAF website.

Content Note: The following article contains sensitive content, including themes of sexual harm. This may be distressing for some people. Visit Safer Community or  Wellbeing Services to seek support as needed.

Sexual harm is never okay.

Unfortunately, sexual harm is prevalent in Australian universities. We know that some students are unsure about what sexual harm is, and don’t know where to report or seek support if they witness or experience it.

The Safe and Respected at La Trobe campaign

From Monday 2 March, we are running a 5-week awareness campaign – Safe and Respected at La Trobe – that aims to help prevent and respond to sexual harm.

You might see campaign images across La Trobe campuses, with key messages about what sexual harm is, that it is never ok and how to seek help and support.

Let’s be really clear, what is sexual harm?

Sexual harm is any behaviour of a sexual nature that is non-consensual, unwanted or unwelcomed. It is behaviour that makes someone feel offended, humiliated, frightened or threatened. Sexual harm can occur in person, online or via the use of technology.

Why have a campaign to address sexual harm?

In raising awareness, we hope to prevent further instances of sexual harm.  We also want anyone affected by sexual harm to get the best possible support. No two experiences of sexual harm are the same. There are, however, some common reactions to trauma, along with other common challenges that can make it hard to seek help. The Safe and Respected at La Trobe Campaign seeks to address these barriers so that people can access appropriate help sooner.

We want anyone who has experienced sexual harm to know that:

It is not your fault.

We believe you.

You are not alone.

We are here to help.

Safer Community
