We know that rising living costs – including fuel – may be making it harder for some students to get to campus or manage day-to-day expenses. We know this is a challenging time for many students, and we want to reassure you that La Trobe is actively responding.

We are expanding our existing services to support you with your studies. For students who are currently on, or about to begin placement for your studies, we are increasing our support as we recognise that placements for students can add pressure and uncertainty at this time.

Financial and academic support
Depending on your circumstances and course there are several supports available. If you’re feeling the impact, we may be able to support you with financial bursaries and scholarships to ease financial pressures.

If you’re unsure where to start, Student Advising or Wellbeing Services can help point you in the right direction and provide advice about your study options as you approach Census date.

Help shape cost-of-living and transport support
We want to better understand what you’re experiencing, so we can figure out what support would actually help.

That’s why we’re inviting you to complete our Cost of Living and Public Transport Survey. The insights you share will shape future support options and services at La Trobe.

As a thank you for your time, you can also choose to go in the draw to win one of two $200 Mastercard gift cards when you complete the survey.

We know cost-of-living pressures are affecting everyone differently – from rent, groceries and bills to the time and cost of getting to campus.

Why your feedback matters

Everyone’s situation is different. You might be living at home or in uni accommodation, relying on public transport or driving to uni, studying online or heading to campus most days.

Hearing from a wide range of students helps us understand the different pressures people are facing – and what would make the biggest difference right now.

Your feedback will help inform support options that make it easier to stay engaged with your studies and uni life.

Share your experiences

The survey takes around 5 minutes to complete, and your responses are anonymous.

Once you’ve filled out the survey, you can provide your email address to go in the draw to win one of two $200 Mastercard gift cards.

Complete the survey

Need support?

If rising costs of living are affecting you, support is available at La Trobe.

This is a tough time, and you’re not expected to manage it on your own. Please reach out and make use of the support available to you – we’re here to help.

Monday 11 May is Are You Safe at Home? Day – a national awareness campaign led by Safe + Equal that encourages people to start conversations about family violence and support those who may be experiencing it.

Family violence is not always obvious. It could affect someone you see every day – a friend, classmate or family member. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s worth paying attention to that feeling.

You don’t need to be an expert to support someone. This May, start the conversation.

Check in with yourself

Ask yourself:

Do you feel safe where you live?

Do you feel pressured, controlled or fearful in a relationship?

Do you feel like you are constantly managing someone else’s reactions?

These questions can be difficult to think about, but you deserve to feel safe at home and in your relationships.

Are you worried about someone else?

You might notice a friend becoming withdrawn, anxious or uncomfortable talking about home. They may seem isolated or be constantly checked up on by someone else.

Sometimes, simply checking in can help someone feel less alone.

One simple question can help

Asking “Are you safe at home?” can feel awkward, but it can open the door to support.

If you ask someone:

choose a private and safe moment

listen without interrupting

believe what they tell you

You do not have to fix the situation. Simply being there can make a difference.

Learn more about home safety

Student Wellbeing Connect is here to support you

Student Wellbeing Connect can provide help in situations where seeing a counsellor might not be enough or you might need something slightly different.

Our team includes social workers and psychologists who can listen, help you explore your options and connect you with other support options when needed.

What you can expect

When you connect with us, we can:

Content warning: The following refers to harm towards LGBTIQA+ communities.

Sunday 17 May is IDAHOBIT, also known as the Day Against LGBTIQA+ Discrimination. It marks the 1990 anniversary of when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses.

The day has since evolved through increased recognition of how all LGBTIQA+ communities have been impacted by discrimination. For example, laws policing ‘homosexuality’ were often broadly applied to bisexual, transgender, asexual and intersex people as well.

IDAHOBIT – why does it matter in 2026?

We’ve made some recent advances in LGBTIQA+ human rights in Australia, but challenges still remain.

Conversion practices are outlawed in Victoria but remain legal in other parts of the country.

A 2025 report found that LGBTIQA+ people are less likely to be out at work in 2025 than they were in 2022.

Intersex infants still face invasive, cosmetic medical procedures across most of the country.

The Australian Human Rights Commission recently released the Equal Identities Report, highlighting widespread and increasing discrimination against trans and gender diverse people when accessing education, healthcare, workplaces, housing and justice systems.

Religious exemptions legally allow removal of LGBTIQA+ teachers and students in select schools and workplaces.

Actions you can take

If you want to learn some more practical tips on how we can support our LGBTIQA+ colleagues, students and community, go to the IDAHOBIT website.

University Mental Health Day 2026

For a lot of us, seeing the news each day prompts us to reflect on how difficult the world has become for so many people. Global unrest has far-reaching impacts, whether it be from the rising price of essentials, concern about war and hostilities or consequences of accelerated climate change.

Some people may be personally impacted, while others may be showing concern from a distance. Most people will be experiencing some negative reactions about our current social and political environment, but there are ways to manage those responses and stay focused on things like study.

Connecting with others to support your wellbeing

University Mental Health Day 2026 theme is “human connection”. It’s not just about catching up with mates but also about building and maintaining strong communities to take meaningful action to support one another.

Here are some ways that you can engage human connection to support your wellbeing and the wellbeing of others:

Personal actions for your own wellbeing

Talk to people you love and trust. You might share your worries or seek distraction if you are limiting your media intake.

Use your free will to step back from media to protect your peace, giving you space to reset and focus on other things.

Reflect on your actions and change what doesn’t serve you or others. You can make small, manageable changes or big moves, it’s your choice.

If you need solitude, reflection, prayer or quiet time, find a space to do so. Check out La Trobe’s Spaces For Everyone webpage for options.

Act for yourself and act for others

Find or build a community based on shared, meaningful values and goals. Communities are built on mutual support, acting together to create social change without competition or hidden agendas and a sense of knowing that by supporting others, you are also being supported. You could start by joining a club or society at La Trobe to find your type of people.

Listen to minoritised voices, especially those most affected by global issues or who are often silenced. Consider what they’re asking for and how you can support their rights and safety in a way that is manageable for you.

If you feel like you have more to give, you could create or join social movements for change – these are groups that ask corporations and people who hold power to stop being complicit in wider social issues. Social movements can be as simple as boycotting a brand that is causing or funding harm, joining a protest or rally or writing a letter/ email to your local member of parliament (MP).

Find supports

If you or someone you know is impacted by global events, local stresses or other concerns, you might seek support. There are many types of support available and may include:

Mental health and wellbeing supports:

If it is an emergency (you or someone else is in danger), call 000

La Trobe University Wellbeing Services

Talk to one of our staff members about anything that’s concerning you and find a range of advice and techniques to support your wellbeing

University Crisis Line (Call 1300 146 307 or Text: 0488 884 100)

Breakups can be one of the most significant mental health events young men experience. New Australian research with men aged 18–30 shows the emotional impact can be intense, disorienting and can place young men at real risk.

The pressure to “move on”

Many men feel pressure to quickly get over a breakup. This research suggests that well‑intended advice can sometimes make things harder, not easier.

What recovery really looks like

Healing after a breakup takes time. Real recovery involves space to process what happened and gradually rebuild. This includes:

Refocussing on daily routines and study habits

Reconnecting with interests, sports or social activities

Slowly regaining emotional stability and allowing your motivation to gradually return

Why the right support matters

Support makes a difference, but only when it’s the right kind. The right support can help young men to better understand themselves at their lowest point. Some examples of helpful support include:

Taking someone seriously.

Hearing them out without judgment

Avoid giving pressure, quick fixes, or “just get over it” advice.

You don’t need to rush your way out of a breakup. Real recovery takes time, so give yourself the space to go through it properly.

Some useful resources
