Delivered by Catalysr in collaboration with Arctic 90, and hosted by Stone & Chalk with support from the City of Melbourne, this program is about more than just launching a startup. It’s an opportunity to:

• Connect with a supportive community of like‑minded migrapreneurs who understand the journey.

Whether you’re refining an idea or ready to take the next step, Melbourne Migrapreneurs provides guidance, mentorship and community to help you build with confidence.

The program is structured into two streams: aligned with your stage of business (assessed through your application):

Traction stream – for founders who have initial traction and are ready to validate and grow, run by Arctic 90.

Ideation stream – for founders at the early ideation stage, building the foundations to launch a startup, run by Catalysr.

From leaving home to finding another one. 

One random afternoon, I checked my mailbox and saw something that would change everything — an offer to study at La Trobe University for my masters. 

Do I leave all my friends and family behind? 
Do I move to a country I’ve never even visited? 
Do I stop working and start studying again? 

I decided to take the leap. 

Time to leave the nest. 

The 12-hour flight gave me too much time to think. Every possible doubt crossed my mind. By the time I landed on campus, the excitement had quietly turned into nervousness. 

Everything felt unfamiliar. 
I didn’t know where to go. 
I didn’t know who to talk to. 

The day moved slowly, and I wasn’t even sure what the next step was. 

Eventually, I stepped out for orientation. 

That’s when I saw someone — confident, talking to everyone, looking like he belonged. 

I walked up to him and asked, 
“Hey, do you know where the Agora is?” 

He smiled and said, “Yeah, I’ll take you there.” 

That small moment changed everything. 

At the Agora, I met new students, joined clubs, and for the first time, I felt like I might actually figure this out. 

University life picked up quickly. 

I learned how to navigate the LMS, manage assignments, and settle into classes. I made friends, started going out more, and spent time in apartments that slowly began to feel like home. 

Those friends turned into family. 

Somewhere along the way, I stopped second-guessing myself. 

I started becoming who I was meant to be here. 

At the end of the year, I went back home for the first time. 

I saw my mum — a few more grey hairs, moving just a little slower than before. 

I met my closest friends, but this time, there were jokes I didn’t fully understand. They had to explain things to me. 

The home I grew up in felt familiar, but different. 

Almost like a place I was visiting. 

And I realised something had changed — not around me, but within me. 

When it was time to return, I left with a heavy heart. 

But this time, I was also happy to be going back. 

Back to routine. 
Back to campus. 
Back to something that now felt like mine. 

I had even secured a role at the university — something I was incredibly proud of. 

Walking into orientation again, I found myself thinking: 

What have I left behind? 
Is it worth it? 
Do I belong here? 
Is this really home? 

And then I felt a tap on my shoulder. 

A nervous-looking student asked, 
“Hey, do you know where the Agora is?” 

I smiled. 

“Yeah,” I said, “walk with me.” 

And as we walked towards the same place where it all started for me, I realised: 

Maybe this is what the life cycle of an international student looks like. 

You arrive unsure. 
You find your feet. 
You build something of your own. 

And one day, without even realising it, 
you become the person someone else looks to for direction.

This article will outline what a scam is, how to identify a scam, what to do if you’ve been scammed and how to report it.

What is a scam?

A scam is when criminals trick you into giving them your personal or financial information so that they can steal from or exploit you.

Sometimes scammers impersonate government or consular officials, banks, military or police to try and convince you to give them your personal information.

Scammers can attempt to reach you via text, phone call, email, social media, websites or even in person.

Common types of scams may include student fee, jobs, visas, relationships, investment, bank-related and remote access scams.

Beware also of deepfake technology, where scammers can alter images, video and audio to make it seem like a person is saying or doing things they haven’t actually done in order to manipulate you.

Common scams targeting students

• Chinese authority impersonators: There is a rising number of telecom fraud cases targeting Chinese students overseas. Scammers are impersonating Chinese government authorities or military officials to extort money from Chinese students. The scammers tell the victim they have been implicated in a crime and need to pay money to avoid deportation. As the scam escalates, through coercion, they get victims to stage their own fake kidnapping. The families involved are led to believe the victim is in danger and a ransom needs to be paid to secure their release. Victoria Police have provided fact sheets about this scam in English and Mandarin.
• Fee scams: never pay tuition fees to a third party. There have been several reports of a fee scam targeting at University students in Australia. The scam involves a friend recommending a third party who provides a fee discount – presumably on the assumption that fees are negotiable and the third party can bargain hard. Students are advised to pay their fees less 10% to the third party. Following this payment, the student receives receipts of fee payment made by credit card – presumably stolen. The credit card holder then disputes the payment, and the payment is reversed. The student has a debt from the fee department at University as no payment has been received by the University. To be safe with your money, remember La Trobe University does not require or ask you for your bank account information – including your account number or BSB (never give your account number or BSB number to anyone you don’t know over email). La Trobe University does not provide fee discounts to any third party so please pay the fees directly with the University online
• Money mule recruitment scams: Recently criminals have been targeting students (online and in-person) by offering payment to receive money into the victim’s bank account and transferred into another account or cryptocurrency exchange. This is called money muling and it’s a serious criminal offence, resulting in anywhere from 12 months to lifetime in prison if convicted.
• Fraudulent calls about Australian visa/immigration status: Some Indian nationals, who have recently arrived in or migrated to Australia,  have been receiving fraudulent calls from unauthorised persons about their Australian visa/immigration status.  At times the callers have even spoofed the phone numbers allotted to the High Commission of India, Canberra or its Consulates in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or their Service Provider viz., M/s VFS Global.  Since this is a matter concerning Australian Visa, we suggest that the incidents should be reported to local police authorities and a copy of the report be forwarded to visa@hcindia-au.org. Guidelines are also available online. You can also follow the Consulate General of India in Melbourne on Facebook for upcoming news, events and activities.

How to identify a scam

There are some things to look out for if you are contacted by someone you suspect might be trying to scam you.

• Pressure to act – a scammer will often try to make you act fast. Legitimate organisations will not pressure you to make decisions on the spot. It’ s ok to take your time and do your research. Some scammers may even use threats to make you comply.
• Suspicious links or attachments – never click on links or attachments without checking that the sender is who they say they are. 
• Asking for money – some scammers will try use your kindness against you and will sometimes tell you tragic stories to gain your sympathy. Be wary of any appeal for money.  Some scammers may also ask for money upfront for services or as part of a recruitment process. 
• Opportunity to make money – scammers will try to convince you that you are getting an amazing deal, or that you will make money. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
• Unusual payment requests – scammers may ask you to pay for goods or services with preloaded debit cards, iTunes cards or virtual currency. They may also ask you to set up new bank accounts or PayID.  

What to do if contacted by a scammer

• Ask yourself, could this message or call be fake? End the conversation if you are unsure or uncomfortable.
• If a scammer threatens your safety, hang up and contact police. If the scammer threatens your family, contact your family and ask them to contact their local police. If is an emergency (in Australia), ring emergency on 000.
• Follow ScamWatch’s steps if you have been scammed, including reporting the scam attempt to ScamWatch. ScamWatch also has resources available in your language.

If you have been scammed

Remember, it is not your fault! Scammers are sophisticated criminals who use psychological techniques to manipulate their targets. Understanding why these tactics work so well can help reduce the shame scam victims often feel. Being scammed doesn’t reflect personal weakness or gullibility.

There is a lot of support available and you should seek help without feeling embarrassed.

What to do if you are scammed:

1. Immediately contact your bank or financial institution. If you think you have paid money to a scammer, immediately contact your financial institution and the police to see if the payment can be stopped or returned to you.
2. Get help to recover. Contact IDCARE. IDCARE is Australia and New Zealand’s national identity and cyber support service. They can help you make a plan to limit the damage – for free. Visit the IDCARE website to find out more.
3. Report the scam to police and ScamWatch. Never feel embarrassed about reporting a scam. Reporting helps to warn others of potential scams and helps us learn more ways to avoid them.  Note: if you are in immediate danger, ring emergency on 000.
4. Be aware of further scam attempts. If a scammer has stolen money from you, they will often come back for more. Scammers will scan your social media, friends lists and other information in an attempt to further exploit you. Be especially wary of someone offering to help you get your money back.

University scams and support

If you encounter a suspicious email, message or interaction that appears to be related to La Trobe University, it’s important to act quickly and report it.

How to report concerns: La Trobe has dedicated support for handling cyber threats. Students can report scams by emailing: IS-Security@latrobe.edu.au.

Support available:

• Safer Community – contact La Trobe’s Safer Community whenever you have safety or wellbeing concern for yourself or someone else. Safer Community can help if you are unsure or nervous about contacting police and can provide confidential advice that will not affect your study, visa or access to university support.
• International student support – not sure where to start? Find information and support from ASK La Trobe and the International Student Support team. Visit the ASK La Trobe website for contact details. If you need help after-hours (at night, during public holidays or on the weekends) call 24-hour international student support hotline 1800 758 360.
• Wellbeing support – visit the Counselling and mental health Service webpage for information on how to access counselling and mental health services. 
• Financial advice – make an appointment with one of La Trobe’s experienced financial counsellors to help you get your finances back on track.
• Legal support  – free and confidential legal support is available to all enrolled La Trobe students.

Staying safe

• Keep social media profiles private. Don’t share images of home addresses, hotels, airline boarding passes, student IDs, driver’s licence or passports.
• Maintain password safety – update passwords regularly.  Always have a minimum 6-digit pin for mobile phones.
• Avoid replying to emails or text message from unknown senders.
• Never give identity verifying information over the phone. Hang up and call businesses back on their listed Australian contact number.
• Do not download apps or software someone has told you to download or allow remote access to someone who has called you.
• Consider changing your phone settings to only allow those in your contacts list to call you. All other calls will go to voicemail or be blocked. Find out more about these options by researching your phone features or from your phone service provider.
• Keep informed. Regularly view websites such as ScamWatch, the Study Melbourne student scams webpage (for international students) and the Australian Government eSafety Commissioner for information on current scams and advice on staying safe online. IDCARE also have a range of resources and advice on how to prevent and detect scams.

Starting your journey at La Trobe as an international student is exciting but it can also feel overwhelming. Between navigating a new country, building friendships, understanding university systems and getting ready for your future career, there’s a lot to take in.

To help make your transition smoother, here’s a little guide to help you navigate the big topics: friendships at uni, accommodation, study supports and work experience.

Accommodation: Finding your home away from home

I wish I knew… that choosing where to live shapes your whole uni experience.

Accommodation is a great way to get involved in uni life. However many assume there will be plenty of options available or that they can sort housing after landing in Australia — not realising how competitive the rental market is, how quickly places fill or how early they actually need to apply.

• Living on campus makes it easier to make friends especially in the first few weeks. Residential leaders run frequent events, so you’ll rarely feel alone.
• Get prepared early if possible. Book your on-campus accommodation before leaving your home country to ensure a smooth and hassle-free arrival in Australia.
• Off-campus options exist but research is key. Websites like realestate.com.au, Flatmates.com.au or local Facebook groups can help you find vacant rentals or existing share houses. You can explore suburbs, compare commute options and get a feel for Melbourne living.
• Inspect before you commit whenever possible photos don’t always show the full story. Also be aware of rental scams and other scams targeting international students.
• Budget for bond, furniture and utilities. Australia’s rental system can be different from home.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. La Trobe’s accommodation team is friendly, supportive and used to helping students transition to life here.

Friendships: You don’t need to have it all figured out on day one

I wish I knew… how normal it is to feel lonely at first and how quickly things change once you put yourself out there.

International students often worry about cultural differences or not fitting in but there are many ways to meet new people.

• Orientation week is your best friend. Go to as many sessions as possible — not just the compulsory ones. Social events are designed so you can meet others feeling the same way. Keep an eye on your emails and the orientation webpage for information on upcoming O Week events.
• Clubs and societies make a huge difference. From cultural groups to sport to gaming to volunteering, clubs and societies bring together people who care about the same things you do.
• Friendships take time. Your future best friend might be someone you meet in Week 8, not Week 1. Read this blog from our student intern, Min, about making new friends at uni.
• Meet like-minded people at uni events that can be found in the student events calendar during semester. Otherwise there’s opportunities to meet people outside of uni through the City of Melbourne where you can connect with other international students studying in Melbourne at the same time.

Remember that many students around you are also far from home. You’re already connected through that shared experience.

Academic support: You don’t have to do it alone

I wish I knew… how many free supports La Trobe offers and that many students use them, not just students who are struggling.

Moving to an English-speaking academic environment can be a major adjustment, even if you’re confident in your language skills. Students feel so much better once they discovered:

• The Library is more than just books. It’s your go-to spot to build your study skills and get help with your studies or research – online or on campus. The Library runs handy workshops throughout the semester. You can also make the most of online resources like the learning guides to improve your skills in studying, writing and referencing as well as tools like the assessment planner and Academic Referencing Tool.
• Peer Learning Advisors (PLAs) are friendly students trained to guide you through assignments and uni systems.
• Academic English support module helps students strengthen writing and communication skills specific to Australian universities.
• Subject and Course Coordinators. If you need help with a subject or your overall study plan, your Subject and Course Coordinators are your key contacts. You can find their contact details in the University Handbook or via the LMS. 

Placements: Take advantage of opportunities as you go

I wish I knew… that La Trobe offers a wide range of placement opportunities and ways to upskill so that you’re career-ready by graduation.

Many students don’t realise how much support and how many pathways exist to help them build real-world experience throughout their degree. Whether your course includes required placements or you’re hoping to gain local experience, here are some ways you can make the most of what’s available:

• CareerHub is La Trobe’s career and employability platform. It’s designed to help you build employability skills, prepare for work and access tools that support career development. You can upskill early by attending workshops, joining mentoring programs, completing micro‑credentials and engaging with industry events.
• La Trobe offers placements, industry projects, internships, volunteering programs and on-campus roles across many study areas so you can gain real-world experience while studying.
• Volunteering and casual work also count. They help you gain confidence, meet locals and understand Australian workplace culture. Learn about your work rights as an international student in Australia.

The earlier you start exploring these opportunities, the more confident, connected and career-ready you’ll feel when graduation arrives.

Wellbeing support
As a La Trobe student, you can access tools and support you need to keep on top of your wellbeing. 
 
Free and confidential support is always available through Wellbeing Services, which includes counselling support and the La Trobe Psychology Clinic who provide affordable sessions (with provisionally registered psychologists) without the need for a referral.    
 
You can also always visit the Wellbeing Resource Hub for support you can access and self-guided tools you can use to keep a healthy mind.

International Student Wellbeing Connect provides case management for international students experiencing psychosocial issues that impact their study and wellbeing, and sits within the Student Wellbeing Connect team.

Students can access Student Wellbeing Connect as a standalone service or alongside other Wellbeing services, such as counselling, to form an integrated support system.

What International Student Wellbeing connect can do for you:

• Support your wellbeing: We can help you access services that support your mental health, physical wellbeing, and overall happiness. We can support with many issues such as homesickness, stress associated with studies or maybe something is going on in your personal life.
• Connect you to help: Whether you’re feeling stressed, homesick, or just need someone to talk to, we can guide you to the right support – like counselling, health services, or peer groups. We can also link you with other services across the University such as International Advising.
• Create community: We also help organise events and programs that help you meet other students, make friends and feel part of the university community.
• Listen and advocate: We can listen to your concerns and work with other teams to make sure your voice as an international student is heard.
