You said: You weren’t always sure how to get help to feel safe on campus and wanted more options to access on-campus support.

We did: We launched the UniSafe app and our plan to respond to the National Code for Gender Based Violence, including new programs and workshops. 

The UniSafe app launched at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus to help you get around safely after dark. Available between 6pm and 6am, the app lets you book someone from the Security team to accompany you on foot or via vehicle. UniSafe has already supported you with more than 4,800 escorted trips this year! 

You said: You want more opportunities to connect with other students, collaborate in your course and feel part of the La Trobe community.

We did: We expanded opportunities for students to connect and collaborate through initiatives such as the Student Council, student‑led clubs and activities and Student Experience Grants that support peer connection, belonging and student‑led projects. 

In 2025, we launched our Student Experience Grants, awarding more than $25,000 to student‑led projects that improved the student experience. These grants empowered students like you to turn ideas into reality – creating new spaces to belong, practical tools to support learning and events that helped students to connect with each other and industry. We also continued to support connection through the Student Council and student‑led clubs and activities. There are now 80 affiliated student clubs across our campuses, which helped to organise more than 700 activities over 2025 – creating more ways to meet people, get involved and feel part of the La Trobe community. 

You said: You want access to health, wellbeing and support services that fit around your study and life commitments.

We did: We introduced outside standard hours counselling appointments and expanded ASK La Trobe service hours during busy periods, so that there’s more support available when you need it most. Whether you’re juggling classes, work or personal responsibilities, we know life doesn’t always fit neatly into business hours and we’re here to support you. 

You can now book free counselling appointments outside standard hours, with later sessions and flexible options that let you connect in the way that works best for you.  

We also extended ASK La Trobe service hours during peak times, so help is available when demand is highest – from enrolment and fees to timetables and results, we’re here to help. 

You said: Starting uni and knowing where to find the right information felt overwhelming and confusing. 

We did: We rebuilt the New to La Trobe website and launched the New Student Guide to make starting at La Trobe clearer, simpler and easier to navigate, working closely with students to make sure it covers what matters most when you’re new to La Trobe.  

The New to La Trobe website puts all the essential information in one place, with clear steps, key dates and support options to ensure you feel prepared, connected and ready to make the most of your uni experience. We  

We’ve also created the New Student Guide – your step‑by‑step guide to everything you need to know in your first study period. From Orientation and first classes to exams and final assessments, it’s there to help you start strong and stay on track. Even if you’re not a new student, it’s a handy guide you can come back to whenever you need a reset or reminder.

Who can apply?

The Industry Placement Bursary is available to all La Trobe students, including international and postgraduate students.

To be eligible, you must:

• Be enrolled as an undergraduate or postgraduate student
• Be a La Trobe student (not enrolled at a partner institution)
• Be enrolled in a placement subject and have, or will undertake a work placement between 1 January – 30 April 2026
• Your placement must commence on or after 1 January, but does not need to be completed by 30 April
• Meet the criteria for financial, medical or educational disadvantage
• Have a confirmed placement listed in InPlace

How do I apply?

When do applications close?

The application form is open all year, however applications are assessed three times a year. For placements starting between 1 January – 30 April, you must submit your application by 11:59pm on Sunday 3 May.

Late applications are not eligible and will not be assessed.

How much are the bursaries worth and when are they paid?

The Industry Placement Bursary is worth $1,100, which is paid in a single payment within 10 business days after applications close.

Travel bursaries are also available if you are required to travel more than 120 km one way to attend your placement and meet the eligibility criteria.

Students Prue McKenna, Leah Toman and Libby Brown were given the job of investigating Gateway Health’s client intake processes.

The trio explored four key programs and uncovered several challenges affecting efficiency and client flow. Their insights didn’t just impress staff, they’re also shaping the upcoming La Trobe x Gateway Health: Triage Innovation Sprint this April.

This is the first time a La Trobe student WIL project will directly inform an innovation sprint.

It means every sprint participant – students, industry professionals, academics and community partners – will begin the sprint already equipped with crucial context about the needs of Gateway Health’s diverse clients.

“This is the first time we’ve embedded students WIL program insights into an innovation sprint. Their fresh perspective will ensure that a well‑defined problem statement will guide the sprint,” said Shannon Ryan, Manager Innovation and Entrepreneur Program.

La Trobe students from all disciplines are invited to join the Triage Innovation Sprint and help reimagine how clients experience health services. Whether you’re into problem‑solving, design thinking, teamwork or just want to try something new, your ideas could make a real‑world difference.

About the MyLaTrobe Storyteller role

The Storyteller program is continuing in 2026. It offers three paid, content creation internships, where you’ll help produce authentic student‑led content for MyLaTrobe’s social media channels. As a Storyteller, you’ll connect with other students by sharing real student voices and experiences.

The roles include two Student Storytellers and one Senior Student Storyteller for Semester 1, 2026. The Senior Student Storyteller role is for both Semester 1 and 2, 2026.

What’s in it for you?

• Get paid to create social media content
• Build your portfolio in media, communications or digital content
• Work closely with the MyLaTrobe and Student Communications teams
• Develop industry‑ready creative and storytelling skills
• Help shape the way we share student life at La Trobe

• Must have a valid WWCC (employee)
• Must agree to adhere to La Trobe’s cultural qualities and staff policies
• Must be available to work 7 hours per week for the duration of the project – 15 weeks (a total of 105 hours)
• Demonstrate good interpersonal skills
• Have strong written communication skills
• Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving abilities
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
• Demonstrated ability to work to a deadline
• Experience creating content for social media and online platforms a bonus

Key dates

Applications for the MyLaTrobe Storyteller role close at 5pm, Tuesday 3 February 2026. The roles will ideally commence in the week of Monday 16 February 2026.

Since 2015, La Trobe researchers have partnered with The Australian Ballet to explore injury prevention and support the wellbeing of its dancers. The Australian Ballet is one of the only ballet companies in the world with an embedded research department focused on the artistic performers’ health.

Thomas was awarded a La Trobe PhD scholarship following his Honours research, which used wearable technologies to measure physical load and force on dancers’ bodies, helping reduce injury and improve recovery.

Having danced from the age of five to 28, Thomas understands the physical demands of dance training and the pressure to perform, even through injury.

“There is that mentality that you just push through and you get on stage and you do those things, and then you limp off stage after…That culture is changing now, which is really great.”

Initially drawn to physiotherapy, Thomas found himself captivated by the science behind movement and performance. In late 2025, he’ll begin a new PhD project with the Victorian Institute of Sport.

Student Sourced placements

Many La Trobe students choose to find their own placement by identifying target industries, companies, or projects, and approaching potential hosts with a clear and tailored application.

If you don’t apply by the deadline, you will be required to withdraw from the placement subject before Census date.

Postgraduate students

Postgraduate students will be able to apply for LTU5IND from Semester 1 2026 onwards. Check the key dates.
