For many regional students, starting university means more than adjusting to study. It can also mean building a professional network from scratch.

If your dream career feels just out of reach because you don’t know anyone in the industry, you’re not alone. Research on regional and rural students backs this up: professional networks and mentoring connections play a measurable role in helping students move into employment after study (Baker et al., 2025).

That’s exactly what the Industry Mentoring Program is designed to do.

Connecting regional students with experienced professionals, the program offers something that’s difficult to find in a lecture theatre: personalised career guidance from someone who’s been there before.

More than advice

Mentoring isn’t about someone finding you a job.

It’s about having someone in your corner who can help you navigate the transition from university to the workplace.

You’ll be connected with an industry mentor who can share their career journey, answer your questions, offer feedback on your goals and help you better understand your chosen profession.

“The program was incredibly helpful, as it provided me with the opportunity to interact extensively with an experienced professional in the sector and clarify countless doubts I had, obtain feedback on future professional plans, and develop a sounder idea of what is achievable after University.” — Joao Paulo, Mentee

They can help you explore career pathways, understand workplace expectations, build confidence and reflect on your own strengths and ambitions.

Sometimes, having someone ask the right questions can be just as valuable as having someone provide the answers.

Why mentoring matters for regional students

Students studying in regional communities often have fewer opportunities to attend networking events, meet employers or build industry connections compared with their metropolitan peers.

The Industry Mentoring Program helps bridge that gap.

By connecting with professionals from a range of industries, regional students can access insights and networks that might otherwise take years to build.

Many students also find that mentoring helps them see opportunities they hadn’t previously considered, whether that’s working in a new sector, exploring further study or discovering different career pathways within their field.

Build confidence before graduation

One of the biggest benefits of mentoring isn’t something you can add to your resume.

It’s confidence.

Talking regularly with someone who understands your industry can make professional conversations feel less intimidating. You’ll become more comfortable discussing your goals, asking questions and presenting yourself professionally – skills that will benefit you during placements, interviews and graduate recruitment.

You’ll also gain a clearer understanding of what employers value beyond academic results, helping you focus your efforts while you’re still studying.

A partnership that works both ways

Mentoring is often thought of as a one-way relationship, but the best mentoring partnerships are conversations.

Your mentor brings professional experience, while you bring fresh perspectives, curiosity and new ideas.

The more engaged you are – by asking questions, reflecting on feedback and taking initiative – the more you’ll gain from the experience.

Many mentoring relationships even continue informally after the program finishes, becoming valuable professional connections throughout your career.

Invest in your future self

Career development isn’t something that begins after graduation. It starts with the conversations, experiences and connections you build while you’re at university.

The Industry Mentoring Program gives regional students the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, expand their networks and develop the confidence to take the next step towards their career.

You don’t need to have every aspect of your future mapped out to benefit from a mentor. You just need to be ready to learn, ask questions and make the most of an opportunity that could shape your career long after you leave university.

Interested in taking part in the next round of the Industry Mentoring Program?

Working as a Grade 2 rotational Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at Monash Health, Jessica Faruggia held a specific interest in orthopaedics and patients with persistent pain.

In 2019, with a strong passion for upskilling and improving her ability to support patients, Jessica began a Masters of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at La Trobe with the intention of gaining an Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) Title.

“The coursework was rigorous and encouraged me to think critically about assessment and management strategies for musculoskeletal conditions,” she said.

“It pushed me beyond routine protocols, helped me identify my biases and inspired me to be more innovative and adaptable in my practice.”

Enjoy the flexibility of hybrid learning

As the program was delivered predominantly online, Jessica was able to continue working full-time while studying, as well as ensuring she spent quality time with her family throughout her degree.

With a hybrid learning approach, Jessica enjoyed a combination of online lectures and assignments, with clinical placements and some on-campus clinical learning in the final year of the course.

Relevant clinical placements within her interest areas saw Jessica build experience and further her skills at specialist outpatient orthopaedic clinics and a pain clinic – something she described as ‘career-defining’.

“The most rewarding part was the opportunity to work in highly specialised clinical environments that directly aligned with my interests,” said Jessica.

“Being immersed in these settings allowed me to refine my clinical reasoning, enhance my confidence in diagnosis and assessment, and strengthen my decision-making skills while working alongside expert clinicians.”

Solidify strong industry networks

For Jessica, the clinical placements were one of the most valuable aspects of the course. Described as “valuable collaborations with industry-leading physiotherapists and multi-disciplinary teams,” Jessica built meaningful connections with her fellow professionals.

“I was fortunate to be mentored by highly trained physiotherapists who treated us not simply as students, but as motivated clinicians eager to deepen our knowledge and refine our skills,” explained Jessica.

“I still maintain contact with many of these mentors for guidance on challenging presentations. As some now work within the same catchment area, we’ve been able to debrief and collaborate on complex cases in real time.”

Jessica was asked what she wished she knew before starting the Masters degree, describing the value of maintaining strong connections with peers and educators, and how it can leave the door open to future opportunities and collaborations.

Jessica describes the course’s clinical educators as ‘instrumental’ to her growth.

“Their constructive feedback and willingness to share their expertise shaped my confidence and reinforced my passion.”

Reap the rewards after sewing the seeds

Having completed the Masters degree in 2022, Jessica is now a marker for assessments of the very same course; something she said has been “very fulfilling to ensure I keep my learned clinical skills relevant.”

“Since completing the Masters, I have also designed, implemented and led a pain management program within my community health setting. I trained and coordinated an allied health team to deliver holistic, evidence-based care,” Jessica explained.

To stay motivated during her studies, Jessica ensured she kept focused on her long-term goals and the impact that her work would have on her patients.

“Staying organised amid work commitments and planning ahead were crucial strategies that helped me manage my time effectively,” shared Jessica.

“Celebrating small wins during placement also kept my motivation high throughout the journey!”

For Jessica, success was not just completing the course but also graduating with the confidence, skills and professional network to excel in her chosen field.

“Achieving the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy APA title as a result of completing this Masters program has also opened up new career opportunities and provided recognition for my commitment to further learning, reinforcing the value of the postgraduate journey in advancing my professional standing.”

As for advice for others considering postgraduate study, Jessica encourages solid preparation to ensure an ‘incredibly rewarding journey.’

“Choose a program that aligns with your professional interests and goals and be ready to fully engage with both the academic and clinical components,” she advised.

“Be open to constructive criticism and feedback to get the most out of placements, and be willing to acknowledge and work through your own clinical biases to grow as a practitioner.”

Find out what you’re capable of

Join a free webinar (live or on-demand) to learn more about La Trobe’s postgraduate study options at La Trobe University.

You know industry experience matters. Employers ask for it, graduates talk about it and universities encourage it. But when you’re faced with a list of options – placements, industry projects, university-sourced opportunities, or finding your own host organisation – it can be hard to know where to start.

The good news? There’s no single “best” option. The right choice depends on your goals, your course and the kind of experience you want to gain.

Whether you’re looking to build confidence, expand your professional network or get a clearer picture of your future career, industry experience is one of the most effective ways to boost your employability while you’re still studying.

With applications for Summer 2026 Industry Placements and Projects now open, it’s the perfect time to explore your options. Find out more about your WIL options and how to get PlaceReady.

Why industry experience matters

A qualification tells employers what you’ve learned. Evidence from your industry experience shows them what you can do.

Spending time working with an organisation helps you apply your knowledge in authentic industry settings, develop professional skills and build confidence in the workplace. It also gives you valuable examples to talk about in interviews and strengthens your resume long before you graduate.

Just as importantly, it can help you answer one of the biggest career questions: Is this actually what I want to do?

Many students discover new career paths, industries or specialisations through practical experience that they hadn’t previously considered.

Placements or industry projects – which is right for you?

While both help you develop career-ready skills, they offer different experiences.

Placements immerse you in a workplace over an extended period, giving you the opportunity to become part of a team and experience the day-to-day realities of your profession. They’re ideal if you want hands-on experience, direct supervision and a deeper understanding of how an organisation operates.

Industry projects allow you to work on a real challenge or brief for an organisation, often alongside other students. Rather than being embedded in a workplace, you’ll focus on delivering a project outcome while building skills in collaboration, communication and problem-solving.

If you’re wondering which option will give you the biggest advantage, the answer is simple: both are valuable. Employers care less about the format and more about the skills you’ve developed, the impact you’ve made and how you can communicate those experiences.

Should you source your own opportunity?

Some students are allocated a placement through their course, while others have the option to find their own host organisation.

Finding your own opportunity can give you greater flexibility to target organisations, industries or locations that align with your personal career goals. It can also demonstrate initiative – an attribute employers value.

On the other hand, university-sourced placements remove much of the legwork. Existing partnerships often provide high-quality learning opportunities, and the university manages many of the administrative requirements, helping you focus on preparing for the experience itself.

Neither approach is inherently better. If you’re unsure which pathway suits you, it’s worth talking with the Career Ready team or attending an info session before making a decision.

Join an online Career Ready drop-in

Make the most of your experience before it begins

Preparing well can make a significant difference to your placement or project.

Understanding employer expectations, refining your resume, practising interviews and learning how to network professionally can all help you feel more confident before your first day.

Fortunately, you don’t have to work it out on your own.

La Trobe offers a range of support to help you prepare, including webinars that explain the placement process, online resources with practical advice and checklists, and Career Ready drop-in sessions where you can ask questions and get personalised guidance.

Whether you’re deciding between different opportunities or getting ready to start one, these services can help you make informed decisions and maximise the value of your experience.

Every experience builds your future

It’s easy to focus on finding the “perfect” placement or project. But the reality is that every industry experience helps you build something valuable.

You’ll develop professional skills, gain practical experience, expand your network and leave with stories that demonstrate your capabilities to future employers.

The most important step isn’t choosing the perfect option – it’s choosing an opportunity that helps you learn, grow and take the next step towards your career.

If you’re not sure where to begin, start by exploring the available resources, attend a webinar, or drop into a Career Ready session. Sometimes the best career decisions begin with simply asking the right questions.

The team’s strong performance also earned an invitation to attend the Enactus World Cup and associated global research conference in Brazil later this year.

The Enactus La Trobe team was led by co-presidents Aryendu Singh and Akshad Shelar, and also included team members Cooper Charnas (treasurer), Nadil Silva (executive secretary), Mary George (project lead), Byron Singleton (pitch lead), Liza Sharma and Ananya Bhadauria.

The students come from a diverse range of disciplines including speech pathology, business, law, IT and cybersecurity. They joined 203 students from universities across Australia and 43 judges from academia, industry and executive leadership.

During the conference, the Enactus La Trobe team presented three projects across four categories:

Augment – an AI-focused pre-accelerator helping students build entrepreneurial skills and confidence before applying for innovation opportunities.

Melbourne Companions – a program helping older Australians develop cybersecurity and AI awareness through workshops while creating intergenerational connections with students.

EnReach – an international education initiative connecting Victorian and Ugandan students through cross-cultural learning opportunities. EnReach generated enough revenue to fund 20 STEM scholarships for Ugandan students.

$6,000 funding win

The team’s success at the Enactus Australia National Championship secured a $6,000 Ford C3 Community Grant for Melbourne Companions.

Melbourne Companions first received $6,000 in Ford C3 funding in 2025, which enabled the team to deliver a successful pilot program with the City of Kingston. The additional $6,000 secured this year will support expansion of the awareness program into regional areas, including Bendigo.

The project helps older Australians build confidence in navigating cybersecurity, online scams, artificial intelligence and deepfakes, while also creating opportunities for students to connect with and support their local community.

“The project leverages existing community needs of our students to find volunteer opportunities and elderly members needing cyber awareness. Our job is simply connecting the dots,” Aryendu said.

“The program helps older community members learn about cyber security and emerging technologies, while giving students the chance to build meaningful relationships and strengthen community connections.”

For project lead Mary George, the championships were a chance to showcase Melbourne Companions to a national audience.

“For me personally, it gave me the chance to present our cyber project, something I’m really passionate about, on a national stage.”

The team also presented Augment and EnReach, two projects designed to address different gaps in student capability and global education access.

Akshad explained that while the three projects had different focuses, the underlying aim was to identify needs and develop practical solutions.

“With Augment, we identified a gap between awareness and confidence. Students may know that programs like LaunchPad, innovation ventures and hackathons exist, but many do not feel ready to take that first step.”

Developed in partnership with the Innovation Hub (now Eagle Works Innovation centre), Augment is an AI-focused pre-accelerator program that helps students develop entrepreneurial skills and confidence before applying for opportunities such as LaunchPad.

The program uses AI workshops, mentoring and hands-on projects where students learn how tools such as Gemini and AI-assisted “vibe coding” can be used to develop ideas, create prototypes and explore ventures. The mission is to take students from “curious to capable”, said Aryendu.

“The program was designed to make innovation more accessible, particularly for students with little or no technology background,” he said.

National recognition

The conference also brought national recognition for co-president Aryendu, who received Enactus Australia’s Most Outstanding Student Award – recognising exemplary leadership, student-led impact and contribution to social enterprise.

He was also invited to speak on Enactus National Championship alumni panel as a current student, sharing insights on student entrepreneurship, social enterprise leadership and the future of student-led innovation.

“Although I am still a current student, I was invited to the alumni panel because of the work we are building through Enactus La Trobe and the perspective I could bring on the future of student-led enterprise,” Aryendu said.

“I spoke about the need to move social impact beyond goodwill and towards sustainable models where beneficiaries, partners and the organisations delivering the work all receive meaningful value.”

What’s next

While the team prepares for the upcoming Global Research Championship and Conference in Brazil, they’re also hard at work developing their existing projects and seeking new ways to make positive change.

Akshad said the global exposure in Brazil would be harnessed to create further opportunity for students. ”My priority now is to turn this momentum into a clear pipeline where students can identify real community problems, build solutions and eventually lead those projects themselves,” said Akshad.

Incoming 2027 co-president Mary George said she was looking forward to further building on the group’s achievements.

“I’m stoked to step up as co-president of Enactus La Trobe next year and build on the strong culture of teamwork that has made the group so successful. The impact we create comes from everyone contributing their time, energy and ideas, and I love being part of a community that is committed to making a difference together,” she said.

Aryendu was also keen to highlight the collective effort behind Enactus’ success, crediting the wider team for their work in turning ideas into impactful projects.

“I think we’ve built a great Enactus team at La Trobe. It’s not always us (Aryendu and Akshad) doing, even though we are the faces. There’s great students who put in the work and we are helping them guide where the work should be done.”

Aryendu added that the team was also grateful for La Trobe’s support.

“We’d also like to thank La Trobe University for its support as a whole, and the way we’ve been institutionally supported from the top down – from our faculty advisors and partners, through to the Vice-Chancellor’s Office for providing us with a Strategic Initiatives Grant, which directly sponsored this trip.”

For many students, finding a job after graduation can feel like a mystery. How do employers recruit? What are they actually looking for? And how do you make yourself stand out before you’ve even finished your degree?

The Bundoora Employability Expo on Wednesday 12 August is designed to answer those questions – and put you face-to-face with the people who could shape your future career.

More than 50 employers will be at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus to meet La Trobe students, share opportunities and offer insights into their organisations. Whether you’re looking for a placement, graduate program, casual work or simply exploring what’s out there, the Expo is one of the easiest ways to start building professional connections while you’re still studying.

Register now!

For all students at all stages

The biggest misconception about careers expos is that they’re only for final-year students looking for a job.

In reality, they’re valuable no matter where you are in your degree.

For first-year students, it’s an opportunity to explore different industries and learn what employers value. Mid-degree students can start building networks, ask about placements and gain insights that will help shape future decisions. Final-year students can have meaningful conversations about graduate opportunities and recruitment timelines.

The earlier you start engaging with employers, the more confident you’ll feel when it’s time to apply.

Meet the people behind the job ads

Online job descriptions only tell part of the story.

At the Expo, you’ll have the chance to speak directly with recruiters, hiring managers and industry representatives about what it’s really like to work in their organisation.

Ask about graduate programs. Learn what makes an application stand out. Find out which skills they’re looking for now – and which ones will matter in the future.

These conversations can give you insights that simply aren’t available online.

Hear what employers really want

One of the highlights of this year’s Expo is an employer panel focused on the graduate recruitment process.

Recruitment can seem confusing from the outside, with online applications, assessment centres, interviews and psychometric testing often feeling like unfamiliar territory.

The panel will unpack how employers recruit graduates, explain what they’re looking for at each stage, and share practical advice to help students approach the process with greater confidence.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens after you click “Apply”, this is your chance to find out.

Refresh your LinkedIn – and your professional image

Your LinkedIn profile is often one of the first places employers will look.

At this year’s Expo, students can receive a free professional LinkedIn headshot, giving their profile an instant upgrade.

Better still, there’s an opportunity to win a LinkedIn Premium membership.

To go into the draw, simply:

Register for the Employability Expo.

Have your free LinkedIn headshot taken at the event.

Complete the Rock My LinkedIn Profile short course by Monday 17 August.

Your opinions matter to us, which is why we regularly ask for feedback on your experiences through student surveys.

You Said, We Did is how we show you that we’re listening and taking real action based on what you’ve told us.

Ready to see your feedback in action? Here are four changes we’ve made recently. You can also head to the You Said, We Did page to see more ways your voice has shaped the La Trobe experience.

You said: You want better placement support and more ways to build practical experience for your future career.

We did: We increased placement and industry project opportunities embedded in courses and strengthened pre-placement support, so you can access help in the way that works best for you.

This includes the PlaceReady LMS Hub, Welcome Zones and expanded in-person support, as well as the new Start Smart bundle to help international health students prepare before arriving in Australia.

You said: Cost-of-living pressures are impacting your studies and making it harder to manage the costs of food, placement and other study-related costs.

We did: We introduced new financial support, like the Distance Support Bursary that helps with the costs of travelling to placements.

We also made it easier to find and access financial support to help with cost-of-living pressures, including bursaries, financial counselling and food aid through the LTSU Food Bank at Bundoora and the LTSA Student Pantry at the Melbourne (City) and regional campuses.

You said: You want easier access to learning resources, study spaces and support, wherever you’re studying.

We improved access to learning wherever you’re studying through the Northern Study Hub in Broadmeadows and Epping, Country Universities Centres and other study hubs across the country.

We also improved the accessibility of resources in the LMS, making it easier to access alt text and video transcripts

You said: You want wellbeing spaces to feel calmer, more welcoming and easier to access.

We did: Supported by SSAF funds, we updated the sensory and physical environment of the Health and Wellbeing Centre to improve its comfort and accessibility, including adjusted lighting, sensory and calming resources, more accessible layouts and accessibility signage.

You said: You weren’t always sure what support is available to help you feel safe at uni, including where to go if you need help.

We launched the UniSafe app at our Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus, making it easier to get Security support when travelling around campus after dark.

We also launched our plan of how we will respond to the National Code for Gender Based Violence through Respect at La Trobe, including new programs and workshops.

You said: You want Orientation to be easier to access and fit around your schedule.

We did: We made Orientation easier to access in ways that suit you by launching on-demand sessions available online all year, welcoming online students to on-campus activities and combining key events into fewer days to better fit your schedule.

After 24-years in banking, mature-aged student Stuart McGibbon is proving it’s never too late to chase a new dream.

The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science student made the leap back into study after a long career in finance.

“After more than 24-years, I decided to pursue something I’s always been passionate about: sport. Following a redundancy last year, I took the opportunity to make a career change and begin a new chapter.”

At 52, Stuart is embracing the challenge of starting over — inspiring others to do the same.

“Friends and family often say that what stands out most is my willingness to chase a dream at this stage of life.”

“At 52, I believe age is just a number. This is a major career shift, but it’s one driven by genuine passion. We only get one life to live.”

Adjusting to university life wasn’t without hurdles, however.

“Balancing a demanding study load with work and life responsibilities took much of my first semester to adjust to. Over time, though, I’ve built a routine and settled into student life. Even though I’m much older than most of my classmates, we all share a common passion and purpose, which has made it easy to connect. Building friendships may not earn you a degree, but it certainly makes the experience richer.”

It helps when you can embrace your new future with such enthusiasm, like Stuart.

“After completing my degree, I hope to move to Europe and work on the DP World Tour. I feel I still have plenty of working life ahead of me and am excited by the prospect of building a meaningful second career.”

His advice for anyone facing a career crossroads that’s considering future study:

“My advice is simple: just go for it. There’s so little to lose and so much to gain.

It can feel daunting at first, but the real question is: what’s the best that could happen? Life is far too short not to take opportunities when they arise. You never know where it might lead.”
