La Trobe has also secured $1,031,400 in funding to support 92 students through the Mobility and Semester Program grants. That’s a massive jump from last year’s $149,600!

What is the New Colombo Plan?

The NCP Scholarship is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). It’s one of Australia’s most generous and competitive scholarships for undergraduates, designed to strengthen ties with the Indo-Pacific region.

This year, the Government doubled the number of scholarships available and plans to keep expanding the program in the future.

Why is this a big deal?

Recipients go through a tough, multi-stage application process, proving their academic excellence, ambition and passion for the Indo-Pacific. Scholars will gain real-world experience, language skills and intercultural knowledge that employers love – all while studying in global destinations like Malaysia, Thailand and Japan.

La Trobe’s exchange program allows you to travel abroad and study at the same time for a semester or two at one of our overseas partnered universities. Ready for the trip of a lifetime? Applications for Semester 2 2026 are now open, closing on Sunday 30 November 2025.

Why go on exchange?

Exchange gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture by living like a local for several months, you could even spend one semester in one country and a second semester in another. There are few opportunities in life to live abroad so this truly is the opportunity of a lifetime!

La Trobe’s exchange program allows you to:

• Go abroad for a semester or full year
• Choose from over 120 host universities in 33 different countries
• Apply and have access to many grants or scholarships to support you while you’re overseas
• Get complimentary La Trobe travel insurance

While you go to study at a partner university, one of their students will come and study with us. As a result, you will be exempted from paying additional tuition fees to your host university and you will continue to pay your La Trobe fees as you do now.

Most exchange universities teach in English and you can use your pre-approved subjects to gain credits back into your La Trobe degree when you return.

La Trobe’s exchange program is open to all domestic and international students who are studying either an undergraduate or postgraduate course.

More than a study abroad program, the Yani Global Exchange is a life-changing opportunity for First Nations students at La Trobe University to explore the world through the lens of Indigenous knowledge, culture and community.

Inspired by the Woi Wurrung word Yani, meaning “to journey,” the program enables students to study at Indigenous partner universities across the globe, building meaningful connections with First Nations peoples worldwide. Yani reflects La Trobe’s strong commitment to working alongside Indigenous communities and is one of the few programs of its kind globally

Students who have participated in Yani describe their experience as a powerful and positive experience that deepened their cultural identity, built their confidence and cultural pride and offered invaluable personal and academic growth.

Ben Parry, a student at La Trobe joined the program as part of the very first cohort, studying at the University of Calgary in Canada.

Where did you go for your exchange and what made you want to apply?

I went to the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. I applied for the Yani exchange program because I wanted to travel and see what university and culture was like on the other side of the earth.

How has the exchange helped you grow personally or academically?

My exchange helped me grow as a person, I feel more confident with my ability to handle new situations. Academically I developed my idea for my honours thesis while on exchange with the help of my overseas lecturer.

Would you recommend the exchange program to other students?

I would recommend the exchange program to anyone who is able to apply. It is an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life and the staff at La Trobe University were always available to help support me with any issues I had, making the experience pleasant and easier than I thought it would be.

How does the program work?

Yani is a culturally safe and responsive student exchange program that offers First nations students a rare opportunity to study a semester abroad in a supportive environment. This is achieved through direct engagement with Indigenous Student Service Units, ensuring holistic and tailored support for every stage of the experience.

To date, two cohorts of Indigenous students have participated in learning abroad through the Yani Global Exchange. While we are yet to welcome a cohort of incoming First Nations students, we are working with our partners to make this happen soon.

To tell the truth, I had always wanted to visit Sweden so when the opportunity came along to do my semester abroad at Jönköping university, it was just perfect! And I wasn’t disappointed!

Learning made fun

Studying at Jönköping felt very different compared to La Trobe. In Swedish universities, you typically do one subject at a time, and all lectures are in person. This helped me break the ice and make friends easily with other students. They also have a tradition in Sweden called the Ovve, which is basically a pair of pants that you party in and decorate with patches and drawings over the course of your time at university. The Ovve also became a great souvenir to bring home.

Exploring a new country and making friends

Outside of Jönköping, I had an opportunity to travel to northern Norway, Copenhagen, and Geneva. I also went snowboarding in the french alps which had been on my bucket list. I got to celebrate Midsommar in Stockholm, where it is light outside 24 hours a day!

Was it difficult studying in a country where English isn’t widely spoken? A little, but everyone was really nice and encouraging about learning the language. It’s not for nothing that Swedes are considered among the friendliest people in the world!

Opening up a world of opportunities

Apart from all the friendships and travel, Sweden also gave me an opportunity to network with people from the tech industry- an area of interest for me. I had the opportunity to attend the ISPO International Congress in Stockholm and was blown away by the the new technologies on display.

To summarise, I can definitely say it was one of the best experiences of my life. It has helped my personal development and has opened up new avenues for me. To anyone who is thinking of doing a semester abroad, I would 100% recommend doing it through the La Trobe exchange program. You will come back a changed person, as I did!

Studying abroad in Italy was a transformative experience that broadened my world view, enhanced my independence, and taught me many valuable life lessons. The combination of academic enrichment, cultural immersion, and personal growth made it the most meaningful part of my university journey to date!

Additionally, studying in Italy allowed me to connect with my extended family for the first time, making the experience even more meaningful! 

Why I chose to study at Università Carlo Cattaneo (LIUC)

As a smaller, business-focused institution, LIUC allowed me to gain closer connections with both lecturers and fellow students which helped me build meaningful friendships and gain local support throughout the exchange.

Studying abroad offered me valuable insight into international perspectives that align with my interests in International Law and international business relations, which are key areas in my Law and Commerce degrees.

Some of the initial challenges

One of the biggest challenges was navigating bureaucratic processes, including obtaining a visa, residency permit, and tax code in Italy. These tasks were complex, but with consistent communication and support from the study abroad teams at both La Trobe University and Università Carlo Cattaneo, I was able to manage them effectively.

Embracing a fascinating, new culture

One of my favourite cultural experiences was attending Carnivale in Venice, an event I had learned about during Italian classes in primary and high school. Seeing the vibrant costumes and festive atmosphere in person was unforgettable. I also had the chance to witness the Jubilee Year celebrations in Rome, which brought people from around the world together. Another highlight was going on a ski camp with international students, where I saw snow for the first time!!

I enjoyed teaching my Italian friends some Aussie slang while also learning a lot of Italian from them. My biggest tip for anyone studying abroad is to make as many connections as possible, because sometimes a group assignment partner can become a lifelong friend. Join clubs and take opportunities to enrich your experience and build meaningful friendships and relationships!

I had never lived away from home before, so I saw the exchange program as the perfect opportunity to step outside my comfort zone, travel to a new country, and learn more about myself. It definitely delivered.

The early days as an exchange student

I spent my semester abroad at the University of Leicester in the UK. The university’s Study Abroad team made the transition smooth. They were incredibly supportive, helping me before I even landed and continuing to check in after I arrived. I lived in student accommodations where the residential team hosted regular social events, which made it easier to meet people and slowly ease my homesickness. I began to feel at home once I connected with other international and local students who were going through similar experiences.

Adjusting to a new lifestyle

Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing in the beginning. I missed home, especially not having my car, and had to learn how to navigate the public transport system. Everything from ordering food (Menulog instead of DoorDash!) to university systems (you have to scan your student ID every class to mark attendance) took some getting used to. But every challenge helped me grow.

Make the most of the experience

One of the best parts of my exchange was travelling. I visited London, Birmingham, Manchester, and explored Leicester. A personal highlight was visiting Old Trafford Stadium. I’ve supported Manchester United since I was five, so walking through the stadium was a dream come true. London was incredible too; there’s so much to see that I know I’ll be back again.

Academically and personally, the exchange pushed me in the best ways. I became more confident, independent, and open-minded. It also broadened my view of global education opportunities, especially when it comes to thinking about potential graduate or medical schools in the UK.

Thinking of applying? Do your research

One piece of advice I’d give to future exchange students: do your research. Look into social clubs and student events before you arrive. Leicester had hundreds of clubs and societies, and Freshers Week was a great way to learn about them. I also met amazing people through my flatmates and by attending the local mosque.

If you’re considering an exchange, go for it. It’s a challenge, yes, but the personal growth, unforgettable memories, and life lessons are so worth it. Apply for every grant and scholarship you can. Before I went on exchange, I was craving something more. I realised I’d spent most of my university life stuck in a routine that felt a little too comfortable. I was looking for a challenge – something that would force me out of my comfort zone and exchange seemed like the kind of experience I’d look back on and think, yeah, that changed me.

Finding myself outside my comfort zone

I landed in Copenhagen in the dead of winter – straight out of an Australian summer into freezing weather and 4pm sunsets. I didn’t speak a word of Danish (still barely do), I didn’t know anyone in the city, and to top it off I got the flu during my first week. But the hardest parts quickly passed after a week, and any doubts I had faded away. I started to fall in love with every part of the Danish lifestyle from cozy ‘hygge’ nights to morning cold dips and endless nights out celebrating just about anything.  

Making new friends in a new culture

One of the most impactful parts of my exchange was assimilating into a new culture. My dorm was filled with exchange students which meant there was an instant sense of community, and within the first week I had already made friends for life. CBS also hosted countless events during the first few weeks including an international buffet, trivia night, canal tours, and semester kick-off parties, so there was always an opportunity to meet new people.

A semester that exceeded all my expectations

It’s fair to say, my semester at CBS changed me for the better. The university has a strong industry focus and the campus had a constant buzz of innovation – I was surrounded by students developing startups or pitching real-world solutions in class. I ended my semester in Copenhagen with a stronger sense of who I am, what I value, and how I want to shape my future.

I’ve always believed that immersing yourself in a new environment is one of the best ways to grow, which is why studying abroad was a dream of mine. Exchange seemed like the perfect way to open up new career opportunities, improve my communication skills and build resilience.

So, when the chance came to do a semester exchange at Washington State University (WSU), I saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure I had to jump on!

My first impressions

As soon as I arrived at WSU, I thought it looked just like the American colleges you see in movies. While the academic structure was pretty similar to La Trobe, I noticed some cultural differences. Social gatherings like house parties and student-run clubs felt more deeply embedded in everyday student life, creating a strong and welcoming community.

Overcoming homesickness

One of the biggest challenges I faced at the beginning of exchange was homesickness. I didn’t know anyone when I arrived, and it was hard to make new friends at first. It was also harder to travel off campus than I thought it would be.

However, I quickly realised the key to making the most of this experience was being open and brave. I pushed myself to try everything, whether that meant going to the movies alone, joining student clubs, or even participating in a club recruitment day where I played soccer (as the only female!). It was through these experiences that I slowly built friendships and found my place in the WSU community.

One of the most rewarding parts of my exchange was meeting and building friendships with other international students. Together, we got to explore American culture while also learning about each other’s background and stories.

I even got to be an intern at the WSU International Center, where I helped plan events for international students. It was such a fulfilling role that let me help others feel welcome while making memories myself.

Enjoying the great outdoors

WSU’s location was the perfect base to explore the beautiful nature of Washington State. I joined WSU’s Outdoor Recreation program, which meant I got to go camping and hiking with other students.

I even went on a hiking trip to Three Fingers Mountain (though we didn’t make it to the top – yet!). Other unforgettable highlights include a relaxing visit to a hot spring in Idaho, a day trip to Spokane and a week-long adventure in Seattle with seven other international students.

Personal and career growth

My biggest takeaway from exchange was how it broadened my perspective and boosted my confidence to tackle unfamiliar environments. It reminded me how adaptable and resilient I can be, as well as how important it is to embrace challenges head-on.

Not only that, but my experiences made my resume stronger and my career goals clearer. Throughout the semester, I made sure to focus on improving my writing and grammar, knowing that strong communication skills would help in my future career.

Financial support is available

If you’re thinking of studying abroad but are worried about the cost, don’t let money hold you back! There are scholarships and grants available, and I couldn’t have gone on exchange without them. In the end, the memories you’ll gain are priceless and this is an experience that money can’t buy.

Final thoughts

I’m incredibly grateful for my semester at WSU. I learned, I adapted and I made lifelong friends from around the world. If you’re someone who’s even slightly considering exchange, go for it! The world is full of experiences and waiting for you to take that leap…
